The Halloween preseason is here! This time of year we make lots DIY Halloween props, decorations, and awesome stuff and these DIY Fireflies from Disneyland are the newest thing we've added to our DIY Halloween decor!
The imagineers at Disneyland are famous for creating some amazing special effects and the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is one of the most classic of all! In the beginning of the ride as you go through the swamp, there are fireflies dancing in the trees. It's one of the most classic effects in the park and we wanted to create a simple, cheap, DIY version that anyone can do.
These Halloween props are very easy to make and require zero expensive tools. You can definitely follow along at home and make this with some basic materials (see links below). If you're looking for a fun weekend project to upgrade your Halloween decorations, this DIY project is perfect.
The history of the Disneyland Fireflies is really interesting and a great story! They were originally created by a designer named Tim Carter. Here is Tim's story: www.imagineeringdisney.com/blo...

Beautiful....pirates of the Caribbean fireflies are intermittent flashes of light on wires that are attached to fans that whip the led strand in random patterns...the random switch plate sends signals to light up bulbs in different sequences..they are much larger industrial size bulbs and the wires are really heavy duty. Yours are genius really great creativity...you are amazing..

My grandpa was the one who made the firefly lights at Disneyland I was 4 when my mom and I helped him make the lights. I cry every time I’m on the ride because I miss my grandpa so much! Only the fireflies and the floor lamps are the only lights in the park left that he made!

Since it’s so time consuming to make these lights, you can always populate the background fireflies with a bit of electrical tape and a dot of glow paint. The quality ones will sell the design, and the cheaper ones will add to the numbers without as much work.

Pro-tip: 30AWG wire can be really hard to strip without damaging the wire, so use a lighter. Put the point of the flame where you'd put the cutter and when the plastic melts, grab the insualtion at that point and pull: the wire is stripped nice and clean! That little bit of melted plastic burns the fingers a little, so if your hands aren't calloused to hell and back, wear gloves.

On the wires you will find that dipping the tip of your wires into flux then tin the tip with solder and then attach them and it also usually binds better and helps keep out cold Soldier joints.

Great job. I’ve made these before and what really helps is a small spring on the string that supports the device. You can get sprigs for hobbies at places like STATS in Pasadena. Any small spring that expands with light tension will do. It give the firefly an erratic up and down motion that really sells the effect.

Non-Pro tip To shrink the tubing i turn my soldering iron off for a minute of two and once it's cooled a little I carefully press it on the shrink tubing to shrink it. Obviously let it cool down some or it could possibly melt the solder and ruin the connection you have just made. I solder at 300C and the shrink tubing i use will shrink at around 125c.

fun fact the reason why you use different coloured wires is just so you know what's suppose to go to what. and it makes diagrams easier to read. ex. green is our ground, at least is everything I;ve ever wired its been ground. Red is hot, ex. heaters in refrigerators that are around the coil to defrost it.

Don't melt the solder with the iron. Begin by getting a little bit of solder on the iron so it is "wet". Then use the iron and that little bit of solder to heat the part you want to solder. Then you flow the solder on the hot part. If you just push the solder onto the tip of your iron and try to glob it on the wires you're likely to get a connection that won't last long.

Most LEDs have a flat part near the cathode (ground wire). Also, for very low voltages you can just test the polarity by just touching the leads to the power source. A 3 volt button battery is a perfect way to test an LED.

Here in the UK those lamps are two for a pound at Poundland. I buy them to harvest spares to fix more expensive lamps each year but with a better battery the panels are good enough to keep it charged and run a dozen LEDs. BigClive has a youtube video explaining all that.

I'm inspired. This shows users how to hack mass produced things. I hacked my eBay and ordered a bunch of LED tea lights for cheap so I can focus on the design of a bouncy firefly effect, though they tend to fly more linearly and not in circles like a mosquito but these guys will succumb to my design. Cheers.

If you have a soldering iron, you can desolder the LED and solder the leads directly to the board. That's actually easier than soldering a wire to LED leads.

You could just use crimps. Preferably the water proof ones that have glue inside or you can add hot glue. For 30 AWG you will need to buy them online as those are smaller than normal ones you get at auto parts stores. Or just twist and hot glue for a simple connection. These aren't rocket ships. But also google the nasa wire connection guide. They don't solder on rocket ships.

Tried to make them but ran out of time before Halloween, need to screw the wings on as the sun here melts the hot glue so going for 4 strings to a fishing swivel then a single line to gutter clips and branches! Will be up next year, some in my toxic waste swamp with a witches hut and prisoner pit, others near my downed pirate ship! Although at the moment they'd have a time keeping up with the mozzies!!

Great project. Seems to me though that the added wings to the base are unnecessary though. The duct tape blocker attached directly to the LED on the end of the wire is as much of a wind-catcher (perhaps more so) than the wings at the top, especially when using this outside - the base is likely to be hung near tree branches or under the eaves of a house and less likely to catch a breeze. Just my 2 cents though. Alternatively, you could skip the tape on the LED and keep the wings on the base. This will greatly help to cut down on visibility during the day/dusk. Just put a dab of black paint or sharpie on one side of the LED itself to maintain the "flicker" as it moves around.
