Floating and spinning bath bomb with recipe and test - great for beginners!
Hello everyone! Amanda here and I’m the sole owner of Hungry Bubbles here to show you a simplified bath bomb recipe that results in them spinning & foaming in the water!
This is a great recipe for both beginners and avid bath bomb makers because it’s pretty easy to get right. I’m not the best at bath bomb making so if I can do it, you can too!
The key to great bath bombs is knowing when to stop adding moisture, and when to add more. Once you understand how humidity can play a role in your recipe it gets much easier from there!
Here is the recipe I use in this video:
Dry ingredients:
3 cups baking soda (sift this to get out clumps)
1 and 3/4 cups citric acid (fine grain works best!)
3 tablespoons SLSA (if you do not have SLSA that’s ok, you can slightly reduce the amount of water you add in or oil, just note that your bath bombs won’t be foamy like mine are in the video, but that’s ok!)
2-3 tablespoons of a hardening ingredient such as kaolin clay, cream of tartar, or corn starch, I used cream of tartar
Colorant- lakes and dyes or other batch certified skin safe colorant
Wet ingredients:
2-2.5 tablespoons light oil (such as grapeseed, jojoba, rice bran oil)
Fragrance (I used 1 tablespoon for this batch and it came out strong but not overwhelming)
1 tablespoon Polysorbate 80
Water or witch hazel (start with a few spritzes and work your way up. You can always add more water but you can’t take it out!)
Mix your wet ingredients to your dry (but not the water yet) and mix well until evenly incorporated as the video shows. Get a feel for the mixture! Test your mixture with a mold and see if it holds up, if it does you are good to go! If your mixture gets dry while you are molding it may crumble, just add a few more spritzes of water to moisten it back up.
Tips: Blooming your colorant in just the baking soda overnight is very helpful and results in a more even bath bomb color. Blooming means you take your baking soda in a bowl and add your colorant and spray or mix in enough water to bloom, or spread out all the colorant so that you don’t get speckles. Though speckles are ok if you’re going for that look!

Let me tell you an old lady secret......Add everything to your backing soda and last add the Citric Acid....That way you will never waste a recipe because it accidently fizzed or you make low fizz bombs eventhough you add the fizzing dry goods. I get the prettiest colors doing it this way and it never doesn't mix good. I add my color to a touch of water and pour it in the Soda to mix well. Then, I add the oils, scent, etc. and mix well. Last, I add that Citric Acid and mix well. Try it...You know you'll have to tweek it. Another old lady trick: I use a cheap kitchen aid I bought at a yardsale so, all i do is stand there and watch it mix while I have my coffee. I guess I'm lazy but, I'm old and love my shortcuts!!! LOL. Be blessed and have a wonderful day!! Oh, product wise, my bombs tend to hold up better....harder and more fizz. I had customers ask me did I do something different because the fizz doubled. We always have to share to make our lives a bit easier. Those 2 things have been my greatest changes.

One more thing...LOL. Buy a humidifier and turn it on 1 hour b4 you make your bombs. HUGE DIFFERENCE.
Hello! Great video, I’ve learned a lot. Just wondering what size of mold are you using?
Just a thought...........you stated you are using lakes because they are water soluble. In actuality, lakes are oil soluble (dispersable) and dyes are water soluble. Recognizing you made this video a couple years ago, did you discover there was any relation to the speckles in the bombs as lakes do not get bloomed? Reason for asking is I notice speckles sometimes even using water soluble dyes with blooming although some dyes don't require blooming as well. Thanks
It’s humid where I live and I can’t use any water in my bathbombs. I use alcohol and add the citric acid last, after the liquids. I still need to invest in a dehumidifier if I want to sell them as I have a high failure rate. The kids and I don’t mind bathbomb powder but customers wouldn’t be too impressed.

@@rosebudsuds2971 wow, thank you so much. I’m in Australia so our Amazon is a little more pricey than other countries but I do have my eye on one through Amazon that about $300. I should just bite the bullet and buy it. I would like to put out an advent type range for kids leading up to Christmas. I’ve got the little plastic ball embeds to fill with a little prize/toy. I need to get my finger out and take the leap!
With bath bomb failure the weather has a ton to consider. Also if you put the citric acid in the very last you won’t activate your bombs.
Great video but I do have a suggestion for you. I found that increasing the amount of oil a little bit really helps form the mixture better (I have even added a little Rose Hip Oil to my mixture). As far as Cada molds I am not a fan at all. Too much time is involved just for a ring and honestly my customers care less about it.
which oil do you recommend for the lightest with a good shelf life, hamp seed oil or sunflower seed oil or even jojoba oil? THANKS
Hi, I just found your channel, and had to subscribe. I'm just wondering - wouldn't the oil make the tub a bit slippery, or is there not enough to make a difference? That could be a bit of a safety issue. Thanks for sharing!!

Hey there! Your bath bombs look absolutely wonderful and I am going to follow your recipe because I think your batch size is perfect but I wasn’t paying attention and ordered Cocamidopropyl Betaine instead of SLSA and am wondering if you could give me advice on how I would work that into the recipe if you know anything about that ingredient? Could I just add it in with the fragrance and oils? and how much would I use?

i used this in mine and used 1/4 tsp worked great (i added it to the oils)
Thanks for making this video! , I just can’t get my bomb to spin and there is so much foam? I have tried poking holes and embeds but nothing seems to help them spin.

Hey there! I think the spinning trick is to add more citric acid :) I hope this helps! It can also depend on how tightly you pack your molds. I noticed when I pack the bombs tightly that the bombs spin less. It can take a bit of tweaking and of course humidity can play a role too. Best of luck! 😄

What does blooming mean?
What size canda mold do you have? I order mines from there as well but mines is really big lol

I have 3 sets- one set is from Amazon and it’s a set of 3 stainless steel molds in different sizes. There’s another mold I buy from Etsy and the shop is called TheMakerShoppe and then Cada Molds as well. The one in the video Is the 2.25 inch round mold from Cada :)
