I never bothered with rivers because my local (Aire) is narrow, dirty and fast flowing with 10 foot high overgrown and eroded banks, full of snags and very deep random holes. You'd be risking your life wading in it and even bank fishing is hard because it's so overgrown and neglected. In Bradford, even the rivers are a reflection of the local area lol. But I can really see the appeal in fishing nice wide, gentle flowing ones like this.
Brilliant information Carl, everyone who watches will Love it . Nice one 👍

Top fishing mate I have been coarse fishing in Australia off and on for a fue years. Watching your video on float fishing I’ve learnt a bit more where never to old to learn I’ve mostly used the float fishing tactics for fishing for Trout with a lot of success over the years. I’ve been a Member of a fishing club for many years but even tho I’ve tryed to encourage the Members to coarse fish none of them are willing to try it I’m the only one who coarse Fishes in the Club. Coarse Fishing is still very small in Aus. Regards. Laurie from down under. Tight Lines.

You should try fishing a pin for rivers…. Way improved contact with float and smoother drift. Talking about modern pin with high grade bearings as opposed to traditional vintage bushing reels that for some reason Brit’s seem to prefer 😮

Loved the video. Here in Bulgaria we do float fish quite a bit. We have a few more species(apart from chub and barbel) but I mostly use maggots, worms or corn when there are lots of small fish. Have been trying spam as bait which I saw from you with mixed success. Caught an 8lbs barbel on it, however, maggots usually yield more consistent results. I agree with most of what you said I just prefer using different types of floats. It's sadly getting a lot harder to find good spots here due to overfishing(people taking home 10-15lbs of fish a day and doing it daily) and I can rarely fish the same swim twice because there are 5-10 people there the next day if they see me catch something.

It depends on what you are fishing for and what line you are using plus the quality of the drag system and how stout of a rod you are using also makes a difference. Generally, you want to set it tight enough that larger fish (of whatever you intend to fish for) can pull on the drag when fighting back but not smaller fish. If you are fishing for something with a soft mouth like a carp, set the drag a bit looser than that because the hook could rip out of the fishes mouth easier.
I love watching your videos

Do you have any tips on getting fish to bit because my local lake was infected with a virus and it’s only recently been stocked again because the virus is gone
Please could you make a small guide on how to fish large rivers, I had only ever really fished small rivers like the Kennet and Avon, so when I turned up to the Thames it was most certainly a lot harder to locate the fish and read the water

My kind of fishing technique, too.
Such an exciting method, it tends to lends itself to chub but what a buzz when we are lucky enough to catch a really good size dace ! Good clear professional video , thoroughly enjoyable. I was using the Guru Aventus 3000 reel here - they are very high quality and expensive as a result. If you don't need one so advanced, you could take a look at the A-class reels which are still very decent and work well as an alternative :)
hi Carl, with the avon float, how do you attach it to the line?, i saw no holes unless i missed something

If the surface of the water is fairly flat and steady, the bottom is likely to be flat too. If you see boiling water and choppy swirling currents the bottom is likely be up and down, creating the currents. ;)

I appreciate it may not be obvious what goes into the type of film-making I do. It is not a vlogging style (like Alex does) which tends to be much easier to edit, and can turn around quickly. Coupled with running a business solo (now that Alex's help has gone) there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to keep the channel going :) Alex used to help plan, and film, and edit half of the films and massively help out with the graft. This year has been one of working out how to do it on my own which I'm now on top of. I've thankfully spent the last two months employing another person, training them up, which will massively help with the work load and keep both channels regularly posting videos. However I will never just post videos for the sake of it for regularity, it will always matter to me that quality always comes before quantity :)

The fishing license you need to fish, but does not mean you can fish anywhere unfortunately, except for designated 'free' stretches of some rivers. An additional day ticket is often needed for lots of stretches, or you have to join a club. In my area there's almost no river day ticket places to fish. most of the stretches around me are club waters.
