    Disassembly is an excellent option - I travelled to the UK last month and had a couple of spare days during business, so I took my Alula in my luggage and spent 2 afternoons flying at an awesome slope soaring location I read about - the Uffington White Horse. If you have a windy location and any sort of hill (I use an overpass ramp locally) you can literally fly for hours!

    I saw this plane when it was in the development stage!! I had an old Foam Wing laying around about 2 years ago... naw make it 3, that a lot of folks used for combat. (it was supposed to be powered, but I always flew t as a glider) AND I had a dead arrow that was carbon. Made a boom with a vertical stab, and drilled a hole in one wing for a wooden dowel. Reinforced it with 1/16" plywood, and called it good! I could launch it up and over 2 palm trees on my cul de sac. probably a 50ft height. It was great! Flights were short though, 15 seconds top.

    I remember hearing that the forward sweep in a wing is less prone to tip stalling than a rear sweep, but requires a sturdier build for a forward sweep. So as long as you know your geometry, a forward sweep is better than a reverse sweep when made from the same material. This could be why gliders use forward sweeps so often.

    Forward-swept wings channel that air over the control surfaces to make them more effective, making the plane more agile, and capable of flying as slow as a straight-winged plane. However, since there is still no air cushion build-up in front of the wings, the plane can still fly as fast as a swept-back winged aircraft

    It is definitely not unbreakable. In fact, with the stock battery, the nose WILL break in time, but usually not during the first crash. A piece of carbon spar slit into both sides of the nose will cure the problem. What the review didn't address was the most common mod made by the Alula buyers, that is to move the servos forward, to the nose. This setup can balance the plane at a much lower AUW. However, for sloping only go with the stock setup. Btw. there's also a nice ballast compartment.

  • @PDZ1122

    Longitudinal stability is affected by the relationship of C.P. to C.G, not whether it has been moved forward or backward or whatever. Forward sweep is destabilizing in roll, backward sweep increases lateral stability.

    If you are going to continue to do episodes on gliders (which I would love to see), could you also do an episode on how to build a bungee launcher? I've seen videos of people using them, actually a few people used them to launch an RC plane, not just gliders, and I would love to see you guys build one and show how to use it properly. I don't know how. It seems like a better way to get a longer flight out of a glider when learning.

    It might have come down to the pilot as to who won, but David said that his plane was about 10 grams heavier than Bixler's and that would allow him to penetrate still air and turbulence better and keep his airspeed higher. Also, could you please go over the concept of "center of pressure" and what wing-sweep dose to it more? I have always thought back sweep allows the plane to go faster while forward sweep causes instability.

    I think David should do a second take on the forward swept wing thing. Josh Scott could do some illustrations of spanwise flow, and Bixler could make some funny hand gestures to demonstrate wingtip vortices. Chad could be vertical instability. You could make it a musical number! (Remember Rocket Plane.)

  • @nickfury1279
    @nickfury127911 жыл бұрын

    When a straight-winged plane accelerates, a cushion of air starts to develop at its leading edge. This is the primary cause of drag, and is why straight-winged planes can't fly as fast as swept-wing planes. Planes with swept-back wings are able to fly faster because the sharper angle of the wings allow the cushion of air to slough off, thereby reducing drag. However, planes with swept-back wings have higher stall speeds than straight-winged planes.

    As much as these are good models you would be better to use a hot-wire cut EPP model as the nose will brake off these in no time. Cut foam is lighter and tougher if you use filament tape and contact gel adhesive. Bungy launch is also heaps easier way to do this. You could do a scratch build hot-wire video, perhaps .. Cheers.

    ***** I also went through the expensive composite glider phase. I went through in a short period a 2 x Blaster 2s and a Blaster 3 (plus replacement accessories), a couple of MicroFlohs, Elf Mini and another model I've forgotten the name of. This was hurting my bank balance so I gave up on gliding for a while. I'm just getting back in to again with relatively cheap models. Flying Wings are very durable I still have two of those which are still flyable and a couple of powered ones,
