Flipping the classroom -- my journey to the other side: Jenn Williams at TEDxRockyViewSchoolsED

Jenn Williams is a high school teacher with Rocky View Schools.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    WOW! Love this! This is exactly what we need in our educational system! Self-learners! Students able to think by theirselves and in love with learning! I just laughed about the complaining-girl situation when she was yelling the teacher about not doing her job! jajaja Guiding students to self-learning is getting them out of their comfort zone and that's what we all need! Thanks for sharing and encouraging us to be a facilitator of learning, instead of an information robot.

    Teachers should teach, not make a video and make the students teach themselves from it. Its a copout way for teachers to do their job, students end up working three times as long to get the same information and thats just inefficient. The lady said she was tired of having to assign homework, now the whole class is homework.

    I don't learn well this way. I to go to a school that allows me to show up, sit in a classroom and have an expert explain the concepts to me. That's how I learn best. I purposely do not attend an online school because I don't learn well self-studying or teaching myself information. In these instances, I get through the information, I complete the assignment, but I walk away with very little retention of the topic. I think there needs to be a balance. It can not be the entire basis of the classroom to operate this way.

    One more here from Brazil!!! I went to High School in the USA and journalism class was my favorite for that very same exact reason! We had to build our own knowledge! That should be applied to all subjects to a certain extent with the teacher as a mediator! Congratulations, Jen!

    I honestly don't know how this is feasible in most schools. I teach six periods out of seven every day, have five different preps, and do the after-school care for our high school students. I'm at school from 7:00 a.m. until 6 p.m. When would I find time to record all of these presentations? This all sounds wonderful, but I truly do not see how one can do it. There are not enough hours in the day.

    Maybe you can get a grant and do it over the summer? If there were funds available, that is. ;-}

    I don't lecture or give textbook questions in my SS class to begin with, so I am not sold on students watching "online" lectures of me at home.

    So glad to see such comment. There are many scientific articles on the topic nowadays. Try to look at the article "Flipped Classroom: A constructivist Approach" by Dr. Poonam Sharma, but also "The flipped classroom: a review of its advantages and challenges" of G.Akçayır and M. Akçayır. Good luck with writing your thesis :)

    This video is 9 years old, which in education, is outdated. Many districts tried this with Empower, but it did not work. I believe that flipping the classroom is great sometimes, but not as a constant tool in the classroom. There is no substitute for good teaching.

    Flipped classrooms don't work for me. I don't know what evidence they're going off of but it's just an excuse for teachers to sit back and not do their job.
