They did 127mph easily with 4 people in!!! Excellent cars, a friend had a white one in 1992. I always liked the dashboard in the GTE and also the Monza. Many of the digital dash parts ended up in chavved up Novas, I saw a really good Nova with a Novadose body kit in the late 90s at a car cruise in Crewe.

When I passed my test at age 17, I was given a mk2 Astra for free by my collage tutor. It was a 1.2 4speed banger. Not long after, I blew the engine and started looking for a replacement. I went to the scrap yard for some bits and saw a GTE with no engine. I bought the kit (front and rear bumpers, spoiler, grille, skirts etc) for just £50!! I then found a crash damaged Astra with a 1.3 engine which I bought for £20 from a friend. Took the engine out the £20 car and put it in mine then fitted the GTE kit. Sold the gearbox and some other bits from the donor car and scrapped the shell for £60. Overall, I made £130. Gave my mate £50 for all his help. So I then had a GTE lookalike that ran well and was £10 up from the whole thing 😁 Not bad for a 17 year old 23 years ago!

Prefer the earlier Mk1, it had the classic 80's boxy shape. All that work, totalling over 20 grand, and it's only worth 15 grand. It goes to show, cars like these are a labour of love and will never make a profit. Yet a Mk1 Escort RS which you could have bought for peanuts a few years ago, can be worth 50 to 60 grand for a concourse example.

I know there was £20k tied up in it, but may an idea would have been to keep it for a couple of years, hoping it would turn into a classic and recover or make money.

Maybe the Vauxhall where different but the opel kadet gte in mainland Europa had the red top c20xe engine from 1986 onwards. Only model 1985 had the 8v engine. And model 86 16v but with an analog dash and 87 was digi dash with the 16v. There was also the kadet gt with the 85 gte engie and the 86 analog dash. Call it the poormans gte. Man these cars where ridiculously fast both the 8v and the 16v.

UK GTE had digi dash from the start in 85, there was a no cost option to delete if you wanted analogue dials, which are rarer that rocking horse shit, with the rev counter showing up to 8k

@@vx.calibre2901 here in Europa the analog dash for the Kadet gsi was a one year only 1986. And there was the kadet gt which had the 8v engine of the gsi of 1985 with also an analog dash. These cars where very rapid. Everyone talks about golf gti’s but a kadet gsi with the red top c20xe was faster.

Will never make any money on a full resto flip with a car like that, saw the same big loss on the MG montego turbo they did, would probably be a different outcome if it was done on something like a 3dr cossie
