    As a hunter who hunts from the ground with my flintlocks, powder tipping toward the touch hole is inevitable. I have made a habit of checking it here and there and tapping it across when needed. I’ve never primed with anything other than 2F but I know some say you will get marginally quicker shooting with 4F. I’d still stick to 2F in a hunting situation for more reliable ignition in humid/wet weather. Another enjoyable video, thank you from Australia!

    I have been hunting with flintlocks for 33 years here in PA. I have learned a few tricks. First is get the bigger touch hole that takes the Allen wrench. The hole that the wrench goes in will fill up with powder. I like 4f in the pan. The next thing is keeping the powder dry in the pan. We use a thing called a cow ear. It's a piece of leather that fits around the lock. Nothing worse than getting a shot to have it go click. Unfortunately even with all the precautions it still happens. This is just part of Flintlock hunting.

    I have seen and heard some 'experts' say that tilting the gun to the left is advantageous. My belief has always been that fire and not gun powder should be in the touchhole. Your excellent ignition underscores this. Tip-never use Pyrodex in a flintlock. The old timers would first-off prime the pan and fire to clear out any oil or dirt. Nobody ever mentions this nowadays. I read it in an 1840 book written by a mountain man named Meeks.

  • @blackpowdermaniacshooter

    Those are all good points. I agree with keeping the pan level so fire isn't blocked with too much powder. Thanks for watching my friend....

  • @kirkboswell2575

    @kirkboswell2575

    8 ай бұрын

    loganpollock - "Never use Pyrodex......." Not quite a 100% true answer. Many 'newer to black shooters' don't have access to true black, so substitutes become required. There DEFINITELY are considerations to using substitutes. Pyrodex does NOT ignite as easily, so in a flintlock it is quite possible to get nothing when you pull the trigger. However, if your setup is good, it WILL fire - but in my experience it ALWAYS is a "hang fire". If you can get comfortable with that (and some do), it is a usable powder. Same goes for T7, etc. There is a new "sulfurless" substitute from Shooters World that does work in flintlocks without hangfires, but it's tricky. High humidity will result in hang fires. Low humidity and it acts like black. It also has moisture as an ash post firing. You can actually load easily with a dry patch. But again, it's finicky in my experience. For the Pyrodex (and T7, etc), the standard recommendation has been 5 to 10 grains of black FIRST, followed by the remainder charge as Pyrodex - and black on the pan as well. This technique saved a great deal of black, and allows flintlock shooters to still utilize the substitutes. It's also the best way to utilize substitutes in a flintlock.

    I like small feathers or Porqupine quills for vent picks. They wipe the sides better than metal picks and are softer Also on damp or wet days they can save a charge by sealing the water out. If i leave a quill in the vent, i never get a hang fire and also very few flashes. Downside of that is you still need to prime before shooting.

    All good tips, but most are common sense, My flintlock tip: When you get ready to load, open the frizzen, push a tooth pick into the touch hole, load up, if shooting at a range, put in priming powder, remove tooth pick, fire. If loading for hunting, after loading, close frizzen, hold frizzen, closed, break tooth pick at edge of frizzen leave tooth pick in that state until you need to prime, to prime open frizzen, remove tooth pick, prime, if no shot, empty frizzen replace tooth pick, or put a new one in!

    the ram rod can be marked by placing it along the barrel with the end right at the touch hole if it is not marked already, this is a good idea anyway to check the markings if any. still loaded used rifles are not uncommon at all because the former owner did not know how or did not want to try to unload it. always check when you pick up a rifle of unknown origin. never EVER dry fire a flintlock without checking yourself, it might just decide to ignite a load in the barrel. unlikely.....BUT such a mistake could injure or kill a bystander. the touch hole can be blocked with a toothpick if you are working on the rifle for safety. black powder must be treated with respect at all times.
