Flint and steel fire with untreated hors hoof fungus (amadou)

I let the stretched out piece of amadou dry for about 2 hour before I used it.
Hope you enjoy

Damn. I been trying to light unprocessed amadou to no success. What a great idea to use ash. David West puts it on everything and it works. Thanks for the idea.

Dave Canterbury did this, without the fire ash, and it took with flint and steel little treating. In saying that, it took many strikes before he got the amadou to take.

When your charred punk wood looks like this, it takes 1 to a few strikes to get it going(best type of charred punk wood)... When you char enough, you will know what to look for, more so what kind of punkwood to look for before you char it.

Nice demonstration of the amadou and the method of using the charred material this way. Why did you dump ALL your charred punkwood into the first fire? I usually make a tinder bundle, which once I get it ignited from my charred material, place it alone into my fire lay, preserving the charred material for additional ignitions. Just curious if there is a reason to do what you've done.

Thanks😊 Since my tinder bundle was birch bark I wanted a bigger and hotter ember. I later charred more punkwood in that same fire.

Hej!

It looks to me like you treated that horse hoof fungus with fresh smoldering ashes. So really it’s not good to use for your initiating an ember for your first fire but more useful for your second Fire.

Thanks for your concern😊 And of course you must be careful with this method. Some tinders can't be held on top of the flint making this method a functional option. In my almost 40 years doing this I haven't yet hit my knuckles😏
