Flight Pathfinder Electric Baritone Review - Peter Moss Ukulele
When I first saw one of these solid body baritone electric ukes, I just couldn't wait to get my hands on one. People tend to know me more as a ukulele player. However, I had a 35 year break from it. To keep me occupied, I took up both the acoustic and electric guitars. Probably now 10 years since I played anything with steel strings and it took a bit to re-adjust with stretch and grip and use a pick !!! - I hope you like the demo and some of the tunes made famous by guitarists of the mid 70's to 80's. Recently just discovered there’s such thing as a baritone uke, I’ve been playing for a bout a year. Definitely gonna get me a baritone uke then after that it’s an electric baritone uke!

I am very happy with mine. Also being a guitarist, I already had an amp and some effects pedals as well as a digital mixer and audio recorder. So what I'm saying is to get the sound you hear required some extra investment. If you don't want to record, just purchase a small amp from Blackstar or the Boss Katana.
It was so pleasant to hear pink floyd out of nowhere like that. Thanks for the demo!

I am very happy with it. Unless you purchase from a recognised ukulele/guitar store, you will need to set a few parameters such as the intonation. I also swapped the strings for a heavier gauge. I would recommend going to a store and trying one out rather than ordering online for peace of mind. 😊

I was hoping flight would do a Baritone version of ðis. I have a vanguard and love it. But ðe baritone gives it ðat deeper sound you don’t get on ðe standard Uke. Combined wið ðe grunt of a solid electric is just wow! Ðe only þing I’d love to see on top now would be a whammy bar. Awesome review ðough 😊

I absolutely love your demo. I am getting back into playing guitar after many years, and this instrument is what I’ve been looking for. Where can I find songs with the DGBE tuning? Thank you!
@PeterMossUkulele
5 ай бұрын
Hello - Thanks for your comment and question. DGBE as you most probably know in the guitar strings 1-4. In ukulele circles it would be classed as a Baritone tuning and in the world of the guitar, classed as Tenor Tuning. Either way it's DGBE. So any books/KZread tutorials of that tuning should be right up your street. I would literally search on Google, "How to play songs in DGBE tuning" after that "How to play tunes in Tenor Guitar tuning" - Don't forget KZread as it's also a great resource. Glad you liked my demo.
I love this! I have an acoustic baritone that I play almost exclusively. I am really wanting this Flight!

I had a serious problem on my tenor Pathfinder with the 0th fret being way too high, hence when was is in tune chords made on the first and second fret sounded sour. Chords further up the neck were fine. I see this baritone version does not have a 0 fret, probably a good change.
@PeterMossUkulele
10 ай бұрын
I am not an expert but I think it wasn't the Zero fret that was too high creating the issue, it was the slots in the nut weren't deep enough.
I’ve just come across your channel and love your review of the Flight pathfinder Baritone ukulele. Could I ask what setting you are using for “Run” and what effects pedals you have used please? I have subscribed to the channel and look forward to more baritone based pieces. Thank you.

Hey Shaun. Thanks for your feedback on my demo video. There are 3 effects going on. Digital delay (echo), some reverb to make it a bigger sound and some crunch overdrive. The delay is set to what is known as dotted 8th's. Before I played "Run", I demonstrated the speed (tempo)before starting. In a nutshell whilst the guitars time signature is in 4/4 the delay is in 6/8 but both start on beat one and three of the 4/4.. It's a weird but an effective concept used by other bands such as the Police and U2. The only thing missing from the original is a touch of chorus or a Flanger.

I love this. Is the baritone tuned different than GCEA? I absolutely love the sound. I was considering the Flight Pathfinder tenor. I’m 68 and don’t want to learn new chords. Incidentally, my last name is Moss too. My great great grandfather immigrated from England to the US in 1800’s. You are awesome.
@PeterMossUkulele
8 ай бұрын
Hello - The Baritone is tuned DGBE. You can use all the same chord shapes you know on GCEA but the would have different names. For example playing a C Major chord using GCEA tuning. on the Baritone that very same shape would be G Major. Ps - Thank you for the "awesome" compliment. Made my day. Peter.
I was really hoping for some Metallica from you but I"ll take the Floyd!

Great demo! What is you pedal set up to get the ping pong echo? Also, was it as good for strumming as it was for lead / solos? Many thanks. 👍
@PeterMossUkulele
6 ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for you question. The stereo ping pong delay was generated via a Behringer Flow 8 digital mixer. It gives me lots of control including mix level, tempo and number of repeats.
Hello Peter. Thank you for the review. You mentioned somewhere on the commentaries that you purchased a set of guitar strings 13's and used strings 2,3,4 and 5 and discarded 1 & 6. I've ordered my Pathfinder, not arrived yet. Do you still recommend changing the strings to that kind of gauges, let's say: 17-26-36-46
@PeterMossUkulele
5 ай бұрын
Try it first with the manufactures strings first. I hear some leave the factory with thicker gauges.
I’m just a beginner but really enjoying the learning process so far. Just wondering where do you get the tabs for baritone ukelele rock songs? I’m having trouble finding books, would love to get one of these and play rock or metal songs on it.

If you go onto the Hal Leonard website, search their Baritone ukulele section. If they haven't got and tutorials with a DVD/BluRAY/ Memory stick, I don't know where else to send you.
Hi, great playing as usual. I am looking to get this uke for myself. Would you recommend it and what negatives if any do you fond with it? Thanks.
@PeterMossUkulele

The basic instrument is fine. However, unless you are pretty handy yourself, It requires a set up. I recommend a thicker gauge of strings. I purchased a set of guitar strings 13's. I used strings 2,3,4 and 5 and discarded 1 & 6. I then had to slightly alter the intonation on the bridge to compensate. I hope that answers your question. Peter.

@@PeterMossUkulele thank you for the reply. You are the second person that has said the same thing about the strings so I'll see if the dealer can change them for me before sending. Thanks again.
Peter, I would consider that a tenor guitar. In fact, depending on scale length (which Flight doesn’t list in specs), it looks a lot like the Tenor Tele that Fender offered as a special edition a few years back. The Fender was through-body strung, rather than hardtail, thought.
@PeterMossUkulele
10 ай бұрын
Hi 👋 This one is string through the body too. I agree with you it’s not really a ukulele.
Great sound but for a true comparison of the pick-up it would be good if you played the same thing in each of the three switch positions.
@PeterMossUkulele
10 ай бұрын
Yes and no. I tried to demonstrate the pick-up configuration with a style that best matched the sound in the various toggle positions.
Peter i play in a small ukulele group and about to go out and do some care home gigs, i play tenor ukes including eight string kala, im a little confused as to buying electric barotone as to wether ive got to learn new uke runs and chord shapes again any advice
@PeterMossUkulele
8 ай бұрын
Hello David - There are 2 things to consider. Firstly, The Baritone tuning is DGBE and you are used to GCEA. However, you can use the chord shapes on both but they will have different names. For example, if you play a C Major shape in GCEA tuning you have a C Major. However, in DGBE tuning ii becomes a G Major. So you would need to learn 2 sets of chord names. On the plus side, the combination of GCEA and DGBE players in a group sounds really rich and full. Secondly, The Pathfinder is electric only and makes no sound without an amp. Whilst there are portable amps available, it's just another thing to carry. If you still want to pursue the Baritone, I would suggest an acoustic/electric model for playing care homes acoustically and the facility to use the built in pickup for larger venues. I hope that helps. Peter.
Absolutely blown away with this video. I have had a baritone uke for a while, but I have never gotten this level of sound. Obviously I am not setting my pedals up right. Any chance of doing a vid on how you got these great sounds.
