Flight of Deities and Rebirth of Temples | Meenakshi Jain |

Meenakshi Jain's book, Flight of Deities and Rebirth of Temples - Episodes from Indian History examines the medieval response to temple destruction and image desecration. While temples were destroyed on a considerable scale, also noteworthy were the repeated endeavours to reconstruct them. In each instance of rebirth, the temple retained its original name, even though there was a visible downsizing in its scale and grandeur. The Keshava temple at Mathura, the Vishwanath temple at Kashi, the Somnath temple in Saurashtra, the Rama mandir at Ayodhya were among the shrines continually restored, well after Hindus had lost all semblance of political power. The Bindu Madhava, the most important Vishnu temple in Varanasi, was demolished in 1669 and a mosque constructed in its place. The temple now bearing the name Bindu Madhava is a modest structure in the shadow of the mosque, but continues the traditions associated with the site. Intriguingly, mosques built on temple sites often retained the sacred names - Bijamandal mosque, Lat masjid, Atala masjid, Gyanvapi mosque, and not to forget, masjid-i- janamsthan.
Equally worthy of study was the fate of images enshrined in temples. Many were swiftly removed by anxious devotees, many more were hurriedly buried; some remained on the move for decades, till such time they could be escorted back to their abodes. In several cases, images were damaged in flight. Countless images were lost, as their places of burial were forgotten over time. That necessitated the consecration of new images in more peaceable circumstances. So there were temples of the tenth-eleventh centuries, which housed images instated in the sixteenth. In situations where neither temple nor image could be safeguarded, the memory endured, and a shrine was recreated after an interval of several centuries.

In Kashmir every house of Hindus had a small room on first floor, just at the top of main entrance door called " hangkuth" hang means forehead & Kuth means room or "Thakur kuth" .When the Hindus in were banned for performing pujas outside, during Muslim rule, Hindus devised the method of worshipping the deities at their home to avoid the atrocities of Muslim officers. There were thousands of costly Murti's left behind in 1990, were taken & sold by the plunders!

34:04 I can't believe it... I have visited Shri Nath ji at Nathdwara in 2012 and it is one of the most memorable time of my life. I was 11 years old and we went to rajasthan cuz our ancestors are from there and it's a common practice in marwadi families to visit Rajasthan once in their lifetime and I remember how we reached in the evening in nathdwara and the beautiful gateway and the lights and the shops seeking elegant murtis of the lord and beautiful artifacts and clothes for the gods...we took darshan of the lord from far away cuz it was late and the doors had been closed to the main temple inside the area but it was a divine experience..I could feel the lord's presence and something was there..its magical..I will never forget that night and I feel so privileged that I got to be in the premises of the temple of shri nath ji...you can imagine how beautiful and powerful the experience must have been for an 11 year old girl to remember till now. Today I got to know the backstory of the temple's existence, all thanks to you Meenakshi Ma'am. 🙏🏻💗 Jai Shri Krishna.

Why were some Temples destroyed and some left alone. There could be many reasons. 1) Some Mughal Rulers were of a bit of benign nature. 2) They looted and destroyed the most important and rich temples. 3) They left only minor small Temples without destruction. 4) Some Hindu Rulers of the era were powerful enough to ward off the attacks 5) Some Hindu Rulers allied with the Muslim Ruler and managed to avoid destruction of Temples and Properties 6) In some Temples the devotees or the area Hindu Rulers paid off the Muslm attackers to save the Temple 6) In some cases the Devotees and Hindu Rulers managed to hide away the Deities. 7) In some cases the Muslim Rulers were somewhat benign and a very few were large hearted to preserve the Temple Worship. 8) Many more reasons may be given for non destruction of Temples. But Hindus never gave up. Even now we do not give up. Let us regain our ancient grand heritage.

In 185 BCE, there was a watershed moment, when the Maurya king Brihadrath, was publicly lynched by his own Senapati, Pushyamitra Shung, who offered gold to anyone, who brought, the decapitated head of a Buddhist Priest. He mis appropriated all Buddhist, sites, stupa, viharas, chaityas, he demolished most of these, in a bid to destroy Buddhist faith in lndia. We often blame the lslamic rulers including Mughals, for mercilessly, demolishing temples, but are silent on destruction of eightyfour thousand Buddhist sites, & famous universities. The historians, should look into all aspects of over history, & not present history partially & selectively.

Disagree with Meenakshi Jain. History of Iconoclasm (destruction of idols) started after the Roman King Constantine converted to Christianity in 312 CE, and not in 7th century Mecca. Here are the starting period details: 314 CE: Immediately after its full legalisation, the Christian Church attacks the gentiles (non-Christians). The Council of Ancyra denounces the worship of Goddess Artemis. 324 CE: The emperor Constantine declares Christianity as the only official religion of the Roman empire. In Dydima, Minor Asia, he sacks the Oracle of the god Apollo and tortures the Pagan priests to death. He also evicts all non-Christian peoples from Mount Athos and destroys all the local Hellenic temples. 326 CE: Constantine, following the instructions of his mother Helen, destroys the temple of the god Asclepius in Aigeai Cilicia and many temples of the goddess Aphrodite in Jerusalem, Aphaca, Mambre, Phoenicia, Baalbek, etc. 353 CE: An edict of Flavius Julius Constantius, who succeeded Constantine as the King in 337 CE orders the death penalty for all kind of worship through sacrifices and “idols”.

she said it with respect to the experience of Indians... Iconoclasm that Indians first experienced has its roots in islam not judaism or christianity... although they were inter - related via Abraham's iconoclasm.
