Flicka 20 sailing from key west to west palm beach with propane outboard

1979 Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20ft sailboat. I bought a new to me boat named Mama Mia in key west. Was one heck of a stressful trip but thankfully I made it fairly unscathed.

    In 1974 I was living in Santa Barbara. I helped build the first fiber glass hull/plug and original mold for the Flicka I worked with the designer Bruce Bingham and his dad. Bruce had a sketch of the grapes and scrolling that was traced onto the glecoat. I did most of the etching of the grapes long with a faux planking. I love seeing these boats still a live.The company I worked for sold the molds a few years later to Pacific Seacraft.

    That’s so awesome! I’m definitely envious you were able to have that experience. This little Flicka has definitely seen better days but hopefully in the near future I can restore her back to her glory.

    Great sail! Well done! That must have been Northstar in the first iteration. I sailed Pacific Seacraft Flicka from Texas to the Bahamas. Then I got married and we got a bigger boat. And we’re still married and living in a van. Feels like we’ve gone full circle after thirty years.

    Hi friend. The Flicka 20 is my dream boat, one day I will get one for me :) So I have one tip for you, close the hatch when sailing, a wave can come in and wash your cozy cabin. I always sails with the hatches and the companionway closed, just in case. Take care of her, she is a sailing vessel capable of awesome crossings! Looking forward to your next adventures with her❤

    Yes, the Flicka is an awsome boat. I wouldn't cross oceans with her, despite the fact, that people have indeed crossed oceans on a Flicka. So it is possible, but it is difficult to stow all the stuff you need on long crossings on such a small boat. But, with a bit cautious observation of weather developement, she can definitively bring you to the Bahamas and beyond, to the Carribean islands. So, throw off your bowlines... and enjoy your newly found freedom on the water! My best wishes to you from an old salt, who loves to travel on small boats alone or with a good friend.

    I enjoyed taking that sail with you. You can trust your Flicka to take care of you. She tends to sail better under deep reefed main and jib in a blow. Looking fwd to your next adventure.

    You can rig up lines from both tanks to the motor to share the gas use from both... to reduce the freezing issue

  • @bobbrown9158
    @bobbrown9158 Жыл бұрын

    Good sail, you might want to check your mainsail for reefing points to reduce sail. The benefit is you can go up wind more and balances the boat better. That Flicka is a great seaworthy boat, it can go anywhere. Get the winch repaired it's essential. Anyway, it's fun watching you on your learning adventure. You should get a Ko-Fi payment donation so we can help you out.

    I definitely agree I need to get a topping lift also so it would be easier to reef that’s part of why I didn’t mess with it but it would’ve made my life a lot better for sure. Thankfully it’s such a small boat that I can hand tighten the lines but that winch is my next project. I’ll have to check that out I’ve never heard of ko fi

    The first boat I bought had a lot of problems, I made a list according to importance, the sails, rigging, electrical, plumbing etc. I went to a used bookstore and bought boat maintenance how to books, it seriously helped. I found that fixing one thing at a time helped me stay focused. I lived on my boat for 8 years and it was the best time of my life. Oddly, the first thing I purchased for the boat was a BBQ, I guess it was a priority. If you want to check out Ko-fi and how it works go to YT Wilding Sailing, check out his format. Damn dude! You went from zero to hardcore mode straight out the gate. Good on ya. Funny thing about small outboard motors, they're all made in the same factories, and then they slap on the different company logos and send them out. So it doesn't really matter what brand you get.

    I have heard people say the flicka will not sail herself unattended without a self steering rig..... They don't have a clue.... With small adjustments in the balance between jib and main they will sail downwind perfectly and point as high as possible very well for many many miles without touching the helm. No bungees, nothing.
