Ceiling Storage racks recover what is usually wasted space, allowing items to be stowed up and out of the way. In this episode, Dirt Farmer Jay reviews the Fleximounts 4’x8’ overhead storage system. The system performs well, is reasonably intuitive to install, and has a nice appearance. See why this product gets a positive review, along with a minor suggestion for adding something to the hardware kit. Dirt Farmer Jay was provided this product free of charge from Fleximounts, and was given full latitude in reviewing the product.
This episode is a product review, and we have provided an associated edition showing detailed instructions and tips on how to install this system. The assembly video can be visited at • How To Assemble Your F...
Fleximounts published load ratings for their various Overhead Storage Racks are: 4' x 8' - 550 lbs. 3' x 8' - 550 lbs. 4' x 6' - 450 lbs. 3' x 6' - 450 lbs. Load ratings have been provided by Fleximounts, and are typically distributed loads. It stands to reason that any supporting structure performs more and can carry its maximum load when the weight is distributed as evenly as possible across both its structure and attachment points.

    Thanks. In the market for these specific type of racks. This brand looks of solid construction. We will see if they added the washers and if not will add myself.

    2:15 Thanks Dirt Farmer Jay for the washer recommendation. I have washers in a majority of the fasteners. For those wondering, grab yourself a box of 100 Everbilt 1/4" (outer diameter 5/8")...100 if building two racks, and you won't have to make multiple trips to the orange hardware store.

    Nice review. Can you include a stability opinion? Does the rack sway around when putting things on and off the rack?

    Dcxplant - thanks for the kind comment. There is a minor amount of side to side sway when taking items on and off the racks, but nothing that we've been concerned about. Does that help? Best, DFJ

    Nice video, thank you. How does one reason about how much weight the ceiling joists themselves can support?

    @@christopheralverson6278 depends on the joist size. your home floor joists are probably 2x10, and hold tones. your garage ceiling joists, if there's a room above, will be 2x10, if there's nothing above the garage, then you're probably looking at 2x6's, which can hold a couple thousand pounds distributed, but not tens of thousands like 2x10's. Just remember too, it is supporting its own weight as well (with drywall), which is around 750lbs depending on how large - standard 10'x22' 1 bay garage is about that much.

    Can you attach one shelving unit to the end of another or do you have to skip 2 ft and attach the 2nd one on another stud? I kind of wanted mine to have 3 all connected and not have gaps in between. It is up against my wall.

    where you join the two, instead of using the included slotted angle and lag bolts, use heavier gauge steel slotted angle that you buy from HD or Lowes, and use same diameter structural screws instead of the lag bolts, they're almost twice as strong as lag bolts.

    My Garage has Joist in the ceiling that are spaced 24" in addition, I will have to put the ceiling brackets 90 degrees to the down supports. Will that be an issue. Also have you seen the video by Toprax and shows how much movement these racks have in the way they are mounted.

    DirtFarmer Jay recommends adding 2X4s nailed on flat across the bottom of the joists to give you the attachment you need. Longer screws are better. Let us know if this works. Best, DirtFarmer Maggie

  • @DirtFarmerJay

    @DirtFarmerJay

    Stanley, you should have no problems. Just be sure to make the bolts go into the thick web edge near the center if you can. Another approach is to put a 2x4 cleat going sideways across several beams and then attaching the the rack down rods to that. Let me know how this turns out for you. Best, dfj

    The angle-iron provided to attach to the joists are 21 gauge metal.... they're flimsy. you can build your own using 14 guage angle iron from HD or Lowes (go for steel), and your custom build will be able to hold twice the weight as the prefabbed skimpy fleximount (and pretty much ever other pre-fabbed ceiling storage kit).

    Giuli Kay - you can indeed set them up in a L - using two complete units. I would recommend keeping access to all edges as 4' is pretty deep to have to reach back for items that far away from an edge. I hope that helps! Best, DFJ
