Fleming Rutledge on 'The Crucifixion'

On September 25th and October 2nd, Fleming Rutledge taught a class on "The Crucifixion" at Calvary-St. George's Church in NYC. We thought we'd record the second of her two classes. Enjoy!

Tremendous!! What a powerful message!! I thank God the Episcopal Church in America has such an eloquent and courageous witness in the pulpit as Fleming Rutledge! May the good Lord increase her kind!

I'm not Episcopalian, I am Catholic. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading Fleming Rutledge's book THE CRUCIFIXION a few years ago. I also really enjoyed listening to this talk by Rutledge on the crucifixion of Jesus.

Wonderful! Amen, amen. I have been watching Mike Atkins on The Centrality of The Cross recently, and both Fleming Rutledge and he so honour Jesus Christ with the depth of their teaching - the meat of the Word, which touches our hears in a way that oft-repeated milk so often fails to. God bless this great preacher - I had not heard of her before today, but I will be buying her book.

Remarkable Book (2017 Christian Book of the Year) Of course! It should be NY Times bestseller. But, this is not popular religion, not a gawking Mel Gibson-esque view of the passion. This is the result of 20 years plus of deep, worshipful and trans formative teaching on the real meaning(s) of the cross, theologically and practically informed. Its richness is put into sharp relief due to the lucidness of her writing style and therefore is accessible by lay as well as by trained clergy. Someone has said, "This will preach". It should become a classic.

"He became sin." Wonder if in original tex another meaning of "became" would translate into "He absorbed sin" Christ absorbed all our sins and through his death abolished all sin.

IMO that's a very poor approach to exegesis, based in your wishful thinking and an unabashed projection of your own idiosyncratic preferences ("I would love it if the text said what I want it to say, since I really don't want it to say "he became sin'") onto the text. This before actually looking up the word, a task which, in our present state of internet, is only a few clicks away.
