Fleischmann HO C&NW Baldwin VO Switcher, Tune-Up and Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For this video I'm doing a tune-up and review of Fleischmann's HO gauge Baldwin VO switcher, based on the VO-660 and VO-1000. These older models really were built to last!

The sprung contact between the wheels is intended for automation like throwing a point electrically when the loco reaches a certain point on your track. Fleischmann sold a special piece of track with a third rail approximately 5 cm long corresponding to this contact which is always electrically bound to the chassis resp. the wheels on one side of the loco. The sprung contact and its counterpart are not centered to make them directional sensitive. You could e.g. operate an automatic interlocking system based on this, they published several wiring schemes on automation methods. It has absolutely nothing to do with Märklin or Trix Express manufactures which have a centered third rail for power delivery. Fleischmann kept this system alive until their decline in 2020 (AFAIR). Even if the sprung contact is missing every motorized model in H0 scale is prepared to bear it. Since the 1980s they added a second system based on reed contacts mounted between the rails and little square magnets applicable under each motorized model. Since then you could buy third rail contacts from Fleischmann applicable whereever in need on your track network. The reed contacts are centered and not directional sensitive in result, but electrically separated from the current for the loco. The motor of the loco you examined looks like the version from 1953, the version from 1947 had different electrical supplies. They were relatively heavy because of the magnet, the efficiency of a brand new motor was 30%. The last version developed in 1958 was just half as heavy and had an efficiency of 35%. Some versions of this "Baldwin"-locos are looked for by collectors and represent a financial value of hundreds of dollars. Fleischmann always offered quality and durability even when it comes to parts like tires or contact and bushing materials. Just the wiring was a bit lazy "from A to B", while Märklin integrated guides for their wired models. I am not into old or tin plate models but they had been acknowledged at least in Germany for the detailing of their models over decades. A loco like this should not stop on switches even when running slowly, because as far as I could see in your video it takes its power from all wheels. Check if all bushings actually touch their corresponding wheels or check your switches! I run models with less wheels in slow motion over all kinds of switches, but I use Fleischmann Profi tracks in H0.

The old DA/4 engine was installed in locomotive 1340 from 1954/55-1958. The round engine was installed from 1958.

1:08 There is also a brown one that was sold mostly in the Netherlands. European ones have buffers, while the ones painted in USA colors do not. 2:02 It did get another iteration with a plastic body... which did not cause short circuits when running the locomotives back to back where the metal ones did 2:55 That was the standard mounting method before they moved to single piece cast frames with plastic body. 5:46 The original coupler box (metal clip with holes for the centering spring) is missing, maybe it has been adjusted to match the height of non-Fleischmann cars 11:18 That is because having a pickup on the other wheel would cause a short on the motor (as the chassis is the other pickup). It has been well taken care of, as the coil originally was covered with lacquer only 12:40 one wire on the chassis (metal wiper holder), one wire to the wheels (plastic wiper holder) 14:29 Spares are easy to come by in Europe, so we usually just get a new set. The transparent one are slippy as hell, replacements are black synthetic rubber 24:07 The whole coupler box is missing there, these came with either horn/hook or classic Fleischmann couplers. If you search for the article number you see these fitted with almost anything Fleischmann had in their catalog. Watch out with metal couplers, if you use cars with metal bogies you will likely cause a short with these. 35:56 Using the original brass Fleischmann track helps a lot, as the flanges won't hit the ties. These need code 100 or higher

This loco was my Christmas present in 1960. In1965 I chaned the metal X2f couplers for Kadees. The loco lasted inmy possession until 1994 when it was sold. It was a very good runner on my brass track of the era.

37:02 Going backwards, you just revealed the slack action. When going forward in a real train, not taking out the slack for the last car, and in this case the caboose, imagine the shock force to personnel. Rounding up the numbers, 100 cars at one foot of slack per car, and you got some g-forces if you don't snap the couplers! Knuckles, on the other hand (and in human body application) might bare the brunt of damage and pain in a few ways. Amazing work and demonstration of this antique locomotive service and running. John

It's amazing how many forces you normally don't think about! Couplers have to put up with a lot more strain than just about any other part in a long train.

I recall seeing ads for these in model magazines although I couldn't tell you which magazines or when they appeared. I remember being struck that this model, the VO 1000, seemed out of proportion even in the ads back then. They seemed longer than was appropriate, not that I was old enough to buy one way back in those days. I was but a boy and had no money and seldom could find or afford a magazine which I treasured. You have done a fine job restoring/cleaning this model and it runs like a champ. Good on you, Darth! Another fine video.

That must have been a stunning model when it was first released. I have the New Haven FA and the flanges on the wheels are a problem for code 100 frogs. But your one seems fine. Well done all round.

I do like that they used actual screens on the FA. Everyone else was just casting them into the body with no see-through effect!

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 The “plunger” is a contact which will make contact with Fleischmann Part 6402 which can be clipped into the Standard Fleischmann Track. This can be used then for instance to close a crossing when engine “plunger” makes contact with 6402 Schaltkontakt 1 - polig With greetings from Kansas Peter

I think these are actually based on some Baldwin locomotives built for the Dutch railways. They just removed the buffers to make it "American".

Baldwin had a sort of universal body design for most of their switchers, so it is possible these were based on some European units.

A thoughtfully engineered model that won't be damaged when handling or servicing it. I'm a fan of motors in line with the wheels which makes for smoother operation and better response helped by the flywheel effect of the larger than normal armature.

Sweet old loco. A few comments though. 1. Nice pizza cutters. lol 2. The "plunger" appears as though it is for the 3rd rail system which was common in Europe. 3. Typical beautiful German over-engineering. Built to last. 4. Traction bands??. Nice score for a loco.

I also thought at first that the plunger was for a third rail, but it’s off-center and sits too high for 3-rail HO systems. I see the plunger on some of their other DC models, but the AC ones have a huge pickup shoe that sits below the flanges.

Have you ever thought about replacing the obvious large screws on the outside of the shell, with "grub screws"??. (screws meant to be used with an allen wrench). A pal of mine did that and then painted the outside facings of them to match the switcher he has. Can't really tell at all at any distance till you actually look for them.
