Awesome and thorough video on how to use fleece properly! Even with just one cage if I had to use bedding it would cost more then my water bill for the entire household every month lol! Bedding has its place, is practical when we go on vacation, but otherwise if fleece is used correctly I feel it is the safest option out there!

I agree with you that it's worth investing in cage liners rather than continuing to buy puppy pads. I think of it as building a fleece "wardrobe". Once you build up a basic supply you can add something new on a once-in-awhile basis for a fresh look. As always you share excellent advice.

I agree that investing in some cage liners is totally worth the money, when I first got my 4 girls I was doing the layering method, Puppy pee pads, U-haul then fleece, it was so hard to care for. Literally I would put my girls in a playpen and shake the fleece outside and it would take so long, cage clean nights took almost a hour and I have a 4x4 C&C cage. 2 weeks ago me and my mom made a few cage liners, cage cleans take like five minutes now!

I do not have piggies but I do have ratties that I use fleece for their bedding. It stunk really bad at first because I was just using one layer of fleece. But once I started making and using pee pads to put underneath their cage liner, it made a huge smell difference. Especially when I added spot cleaning twice a day. Big smell difference. I am never going back to regular bedding ever again.

I am loving that fleece and the recycled u-haul stuff, it looks nice and plushy without being too much and its recycled so whats not to love xD Thanks so much for posting this vid, I had no idea about the double layered fleece, I always see people with blankets as bedding but they have never said anything about liners or special pee pads. It's really great to know whats good and whats not and exactly why you shouldn't do certain things. So informative and really easy to follow with all the water tests, thanks so much again!

I'm a neat freak so I clean frequently. I also realise not everyone has time bc of work to do the cage that much. I clean at least every four hours. I prefer the fleece BC the bedding was super messy and I'd sift through it and it was time consuming. I also saw so much dust on the bars from the bedding that I felt that's not okay to breathe in in large amounts all the time. I didn't want respiratory issues for my little ones. I did get all natural bedding allergen free and now use just enough for there litter box. I'm potty training them and they are so smart they immediately knew to pee in their basin. I find its so much easier and cleaner for them. I'm so glad this video touched on the subject of absorbency, fleece and types of fleece. I'm happy I used common sense and did it correctly, but I want the best so I'm going to look for those fleece with the liners. Thanks and sorry I rambled on!!!

Thank You for another informative video, I have learned so much from you! Have you noticed with your fleece, over time with repeated washing, has anything shrunk? I'm thinking of making my own liners and I was wondering if I needed to make it a little bigger to allow for shrinking. Polyester shouldn't shrink (much) but I'm worried about the absorbent middle layer shrinking.

  • @skinnypigs1

They should always be made 3-4 inches longer and wider, because they shrink the first couple washes.

So with the linings what would your best recommend be if i do it myself. Im going to get the fleece and stitch it myself with the liner inside. So other then the u haul one one in the center would you say something like the reusable washable ones you can get at a hospital work or no to be stitched inside.

Definitely gave me some options of where to buy fleece from. I have used bedding but it smells and gets gross to fast and is to expensive. Sometimes I'm not able to buy bedding at the right time and my guinea pigs have to sit in a dirty cage longer. I tried puppy pads alone and they don't absorb enough pee and stay wet (like the towel). I almost tried cat litter but decided against it because my pigs would eat it and most clump and have clay inside of them. I am going to buy fleece now and try it.

I would like to know the answer to this also because I washed AND dried and it took forever. I had to wash my fleece at least 4 times (and drying in between) before it would wick properly. Now I want to make more cage liners and will have to be washing the new fleece.

Yes you can, as long as it wicks away and you have the second absorbent layer underneath. I can go up to a week before it starts to smell / wash day. Spot cleaning does help keep it cleaner for longer. I made my own cage liners with polar fleece and opshop towelling.

Yes 2 males can be together. Best thing is to adopt a bonded pair from a rescue or shelter, then the hard work on introductions has been done for you.

Thanks for the information! :) Can you please make a video on how to control Guinea pig dominance, I have 5 Guinea pigs in which two are pups, nowadays the two sibling pups are getting really dominant and fighting aggressively. They would pull each others hair out and bit, one of them even got injured(I took him to the vet and now keeping him separately) but is there any way I can end this fight?

+Alex. What sex are the guinea pigs? What size is your cage?

+Alex. Males need to greatly outweigh the females in the cage. I would be housing 2 males together (away from females) and then in another cage 1 male with the 2 spayed females. The boys are going to fight over the ladies, their isn't enough of them to go around and males are extremely territorial. I would figure out which 2 males get along together the best and house them away from the other 3.

+Kika Bonato Probably at least 3. I don't recommend towels at all really, they get soaking wet and heavy. Using something like u-haul blankets is the best.

How often do you wash the fleece? Should it be done once a week or more often? And my Bunny is potty trained but I think fleece maybe a wonderful investment for his favorite spots in my house. Our house is his cage lol. He does have accidents in some of his favorite locations. I just love your channel and the helpful knowledge you spread. My Oreo Bunny is my whole world.

yes ma, I use towels lots and lots and let me tell you it works great but alot more complicated I'm sure then what you use. Bec I have to make sure no one grabs my pig towels for showering as in drying them or folding them! lol So, I have to shop for a single colored towel so we all know lol Actually, I got Joan's materials and the diaper material to make liners. I also have what I call bumb blankets that are a fleece like material usually cream, blue, green. It came with more then uhaul would for the price but! like you are showing, I may not be able to use the bumb blanket in between if it dont absorbe. Has anyone tries moving blankets? I know it would prob fall apart. I have a few but I wont try it bec it's like compressed polyester & other materials

+skinnypigs1 thank you for the quick reply, I've often wondered about it, so when I watched your video on cage liners I thought this is the most informative that I've seen to date, I thought you were bound to know, I was in awe of how much fleece items you have wow!!! If ever you do a clean out give me a thought lol I don't have anything like this at all yet, I've been looking to see who sells the best quality? Would you say from your experience with so many items. If ones with uhual better than those with say mattress protecters used as the waterproof lining? Sorry my reply is so long, just would like some good solid advice, thank you so much..xoxo
