i know the kneel bit is iconic but the thing from this episode that i always think about (besides hot priest perceiving us) is her telling boo that she doesn’t know what to do with all her love for her mother now that she’s gone. just a wonderfully written episode all in all.

Yeah such a gut punch, really brings home yet another reason why Fleabag is so deeply deeply troubled when we meet her. Not bad enough that she lost her mom and shortly after her best friend (which she also feels immense guilt for), but the fact that she "gave that love" to Boo only to then lose her TOO - just so so heartbreaking.

**spoilers, spoilers if you haven't finished the season don't read this** this is such an interesting comment, because someone on the fleabag reddit did a "scholarly kink analysis" of the hot priest-fleabag dynamic, and presented the theory that although they have a ton of chemistry and clearly love each other, they wouldn't have worked as a couple because they're both brats (hot priest being a "brat trying to be dominant"). she points to fleabag's date with the douche lawyer guy who is more of a dominant person (he says something like "don't drink that" and she goes "i'm going to anyway") and ends up having the most orgasms of her life with him. hot priest is putting on a dominant front, but he's actually a brat and playing out that dynamic with God - "it's the kind of relationship where one person tells the other how to dress." he drinks and swears and does other things as part of that dynamic, but eventually always goes back to God. link to reddit post: www.reddit.com/r/Fleabag/comments/1d7ktrj/nonexpert_kink_analysis_of_why_fleabag_hot_priest/?

To me, this also has to do with the lack of control that Fleabag was talking about as well. He has that same thing, but he wants to do something different with it. Whereas she would love for someone to control the narrative for her, so she doesn't have to recognize the actions, he wants to control the situation. But both of them in reality need the opposite. Fleabag needs to take more control of her own life without avoiding all of the hard interactions that do happen in her life, and he needs to surrender some control of his life to realize not only what is important but not to spiral down the fact that he can't control everything. They both would have been a horrible couple because of this because they enable the worst parts of each other in that way. Fleabag did many things she didn't want to do just to hang out with him, and not only was he questioning everything because he felt so comfortable about his life but now there was her. But she gave him everything he didn't need which was control over the situation and dynamic. This is what makes the ending harder, if they were for a second different people who weren't damaged in the way that they clearly were they may have loved eachother. Or maybe they would've never loved eachother at all.

@@kczkmmne I always read it as he gets peace following God because, like Fleabag, all of his instincts led him in the wrong direction. He puts himself in a servile position as a Priest because his natural inclinations got him hurt or hurt other people. This show has so many layers and is open to so many interpretations, that’s why it’s so brilliant I think.

He honestly overstepped majorly in that scene and I feel like no one mentions that. Yeah, it's hot or whatnot, but she's not Fleabag in that moment. She's a parishioner in a moment of crisis, and he is her priest. It is such a breach of trust, and that's so important in the story, and the only reenactors who I've seen actually realise that and mention it were priests themselves. Fleabag herself doesn't realise it, because to her he's the person, but in the situation they're in he should be a priest first and foremost. His own character arc is not just about breaching celibacy, it's also about this scene, and him breaking such an important boundary.

They both were, he was drunk and in conflict between his feelings for her and his duty as a priest.( SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN THE REST) I definitely think he was in the wrong for it though, which is a big reason why I think he ultimately decides to end it. They were both two broken people that weren't ready and were making toxic, borderline abusive mistakes.

It's not only that it's his duty and part of the package, it's that it's *the* thing that led him to priesthood, so there's layers to it that most people miss, and imo they're the important things to talk about !

I have a controversial opinion on the kneel scene. Don't get me wrong, I really like the hot priest but it is so fucked up that he took advantage of Fleabag emotional vulnerability at the end. She was finally open up with him and he sexualized her like everyone else in her life does

  • @Juliana.v23

I know, this scene is so divisive for this reason. I genuinely don't think he meant to take advantage of her or that didn't care about what she said, I think it's the contrary. We see him struggling, drinking, almost having a crisis of faith, and trying hard to resist his feelings for Fleabag because if he acts on it, he could lose the peace he has found in God, hence the “here’s to peace, and to those who get in the way of it”. When Fleabag finally opens up to him, it's almost like he could not resist anymore, he had to kiss her. But I agree, it was not the right time, this was the first time she expressed how she felt and explicitly asked for help, she needed a friend... but at the end of the day, I don't think he is a bad person, just like Fleabag, just a flawed human being.
