Great early clip from '56. I've never seen this before; Martha White TV show? If so, this is earlier than the ones which Sanachie released on those multiple DVDs. Man, Paul Warren looking real young here....and...that's Buck "Uncle Josh" Graves playing bass behind Earl. Josh had been a bass player for Mac Wiseman and Wilma Lee/Stoney Cooper before joining Flatt & Scruggs. He switched to his famous dobro spot not long after this. Curley Sechler laying down the solid rhythm on the mandolin behind Lester and then Charles "Little Darlin'" or "Kentucky Slim" Elza behind Curley - is he playing anything? Earl's flat head Gibson Mastertone, with a calf skin head, BTW, is rock solid and pronounced. Anyway, great clip - thanks for posting. This is a great version with Earl mixing it up with some different licks than he used on the Mercury recording.

@@michaelryan7179 Yes - played a skin head until sometime in the late 50's or early 60's when mylar heads were developed. At least I believe I''m correct on that. I've read that Earl had to either tighten or loosen the head to get it right for almost every gig since it was effected by weather/temperature. Well, he certainly knew what he was doing in that department! And as I commented previously, this is a great clip with that Gibson Mastertone Granada banjo, with bowtie-inlay replacement neck, sounding stellar. Note the "box" on the banjo peghead covering Earl's "cheater key" tuners - wanted to keep that invention secret!

This is either recorded in 55 or 56 like Edmond said. That’s when they started doing Tv shows for Martha white. They had hired them in like 53 I believe to play some radio shows. But Earl’s Granada neck was broken, and sent it to Gibson to repair, and they didn’t have any more necks for Granada’s. So they ended up replacing it with a bow tie neck. Which explains the Bow tie neck, and the Granada head stock.
