Flat Earth Consequences vs. Eratosthenes & Shadows

Ғылым және технология

Regarding the sources of error in ancient measurements and the use of sextants and gnomons, in particular with regard to Eratosthenes and the measurement of the Earth's circumference: You will find all of these covered in reasonable detail in undergraduate astronomy textbooks.
Two pretty interesting sources that are available online are:
THE OBLIQUITY OF THE ECLIPTIC, by George F. Dodwell

Excerpts in this video are from chapters 2 & 5.

1:40 draw a to-scale picture like that, showing both the Earth and the sun. Draw straight lines between them, like on that image at 1:40. Now, try to rotate one of the lines just the tiniest bit, and see if they'll still go between the sun and the Earth. You won't be able to turn the lines by anything but the tiniest amount. That's why the rays are parallel, in practice. Not perfectly, but damned near perfectly parallel. To hit the Earth, they have a super, super tiny window of angles they must travel through from any part of the sun. The distance is that far.

Flat or Sphere, I enjoy the math and science lesson. From another perspective. Our Anger and it's degree (violence, smugness, sarcasm ect) as reactions, are protective attempts to stalemate any introspection on and about factors and computations held to be uncontrovertible, fueled by a primary security driven principle regarding personhood . Irrespective of the topic, the emotional sense of self Toes are feeling uncomfortable pressure from a more accurate analysis and the reactive need is to protect the toes rather than learn of computational error (no matter the actual continuance of pain by the erroneous calculation). 2 plus 2 will be 22 until we lose emotional attachment to the digits as steel plates in our shoes, and find them to be neutral and impersonal, having no bearing on our actual personal value.

You probably have figured it out, but what some of these flat eather's look at the illustrations and take a literal interpretation that , since there are no lines drawn, the light from the sun travels "diagonally" from the sun to the earth and there is no light traveling parallel. I am serious, this is what they are thinking.

Red herrings are a common tactic used by flat eather's, it's what they do why they cannot argue against a point that was made.

I have not seen 1 flat earther use such explanation or demonstration. I have seen different people mention how the sun cannot project a shadow smaller than its source. Curved lenses perhaps can have an effect.

+SqueakerAlpha It all depends on which way you're looking at it of course, but not so much +/- as "+" since it is always the leading edge of the Sun's disk that terminates the shadow. The two sources mentioned in the description are actually pretty interesting.

The Quagmire yup, and that variation is a spread of values. I wish people would understand that you learn a simplified version first to grasp the general concept and then over time learn the complexities.

+The Quagmire Every light source you own with distance from an object will create a shadow bigger than the original object. The Helios "sun god Apollo, titian, Jupiter, Juno, Saturn" model which you worship (unknowingly as an atheist lol) claims the sun is 93 Million miles away from the moon!!!! How in hell will that produce a shadow smaller than the moon? You've never experienced that in your life and yet you suspend belief to agree with your sun gods. Now that is mind control!! Btw I'm loving that kickass dude that deletes your mind warped "Helios sun God I'm an atheist but love ladies holding torches during Columbia movie intros yet I do 0 research of what I am actually taking in as I take the word of sun God named NASA missions as if it's just a coincidence" model

"Every light source you own with distance from an object will create a shadow bigger than the original object." It depends on the relative sizes of the object and light source, their distance apart, and other factors. As far as the "kickass dude" is concerned ... you saw how innocuous that comment was that sent him off the rails! He is perfectly entitled to delete contrarian comments from his own videos of course, but it does seem rather hypocritical when such a person also makes contrarian comments on the videos of others!

All you're demonstrating is that sun is extremely far away!

Angel he said one thing contradicts the other. he said that science will argue that the rays are parallel to prove the sun is far away. but the shadow of the moon would contradict that. so they cant both be right.
