Flashlight Hack : Spare O-Ring Storage

Just a quick tip that has helped me out in the past, its not often an o-ring breaks but it would be good to have them around just in case...

Eventually they'll dry out and crack on the outside of your light. There's a reason they come in a bag...

I would think that an O-ring on the outside would wear way faster than on the inside, especially since they're stretched farther than their purpose. I guess you could keep replacing the outer ones in case the inside o-ring breaks, but it makes more sense to me to take note of a broken o-ring and replace it with a pristine one when I'm able.

This tip is for a quick fix in the field, I would always suggest just replacing them properly when you can...Sort of along the same lines as fix a flat for your tires or a donut, of course its a better idea to replace with a full size tire but ones not always available to you...just a quick fix not for long term...

Decent idea. Another "hack" that will help keep your torch protected from water damage and such is plumber's tape. Grab some, thread the tape in the OPPOSITE direction of the threads on your flashlight, then snip the tape and screw your tail-cap or your torch head back on. Expect some resistance as you reassemble, but don't worry, that's exactly what we're trying to do. The tape will add just that much more protection and unlike extra o-rings, the tape can be replaced for literally less than a penny and it's universal so you don't have to keep up with a ton of various sized 0-rings.

Just the abrasion to put and draw the flashlight from a holster or a pocket will be enough to destroy outside rings after maybe even a single day. I prefer to grease them with a non-petroleum lube and store them in a very small ziplock bag.

You never know when o-rings are going to come in handy. I can think of many cases.

ive never needed to replace an O ring on a quality flashlight. storing an extra one on the outside will just leave you with a messed up o ring when the time to replace it actually arrives

How often do the o-rings fail under normal use? And are they susceptible to deterioration from skin oil and sweat?

Yes I would be surprised if they even worked being on the outside exposed to the weather and other materials. O Rings are very fragile and even a little scratch on them can cause them to break.

Hey Jeff. Speaking of flashlights, you should checkout some of the new AA led mini maglites that are on the shelves at Wally World. I have the 226 one that works like a champ (I still love the "candle mode" of the mini mags, as well as how silky smooth the threads/fit and finish are/is) but they also have a 245 lumen w/hi-lo, and a 272 lumen one too. All south of 30 bucks.

I think jeff feels this way also, and so do many others, it's not the best idea to pull the crappy flints out of bics and use them in your zippo. Yes in the long run they are still flints and they still function the same, but its always better to use the flints that are made for that product, so in this case zippo brand flints would be the way to go, or if you really have to go with ronsonol brand flints, they work good to. Also both brands are extremely cheap, ronsonol is like 64 cents, and zippo is like 1.40.

MrHeavyMetalRocker1 Dude, flint is flint. The only difference is the gold paint on the outside. Take your bic flint, break it to proper length for use in Zippo, and go for it. Jeff even made a video stating that old discarded Bic lighters are a good source of free flints.
