I’m having a flash unit for my birthday next week as I’m keen to improve my macro photography I’ve done it for many years on a Nikon system but when I got anOM1 and 90mm last September I could tell it’s a whole new world But I will have to learn all about using a flash as that’s new to me I’ll be watching again your other videos where you talk about it :)

It is so enjoyable to learn from you. I have used manual flash settings at 7.1 to 10 with the om d em1 miii and the 90mm. I bracket all the time in the drive to get better; that is more keepers. I needed a little nudge to try singles with the TTL and f14/16. Got the think out side the box to stay fresh. Thanks

I've used flash since the original OM-1 (film, gifted to me in 1978). All manual, auto (light sensor on flash), TTL/OTF; on camera, off camera, remote and hot shoe triggered. I prefer simplicity and control. TTL with flash compensation provides both.

Thank you Emilie, very easy to understand your video. I do macro photography both using your technique and some in- camera focus stacking with my OM-d e-M1 Mk ii and Olympus f/2.8 60mm macro lens and same AK diffuser like shown in your video. I like to photograph flowers, leaves, insects, water droplets, etc. I use Godox V350o, TT350o flashes. I watched tutorials on KZread on how to use these flashes with my Oly cameras; shortened the learning curve quite a bit. I learn from others like yourself to help me improve my hobby of photography. You have lots of great helps on your channel. Thanks again 😊

I haven’t done much macro with a flash, but definitely something I want to try. Also, love the picture of the Great Blue Heron up on the wall behind you.

I use it but not as much as I should. I don't have it with me because I have been leaving the bag in my truck a lot in the past year or so. Same with filters when I could use them. A forum I frequent had an OM1 II for $750 US with only 8100 shutter count. I'm crying because I can't get it right now. Oh well, Even in manual mode, just use it. It is the only way to learn. People shy away because afraid of failure but, failure is one of the best ways to learn. Digital flash doesn't cost you a thing once you own the equipment. Happy Holidays.

Happy holiday to you too. Totally agree, if you don't fail you are probably not learning. Errors lead to discovery and a better understanding of your equipment.

Thanks for suggesting how to get started using a flash. I always enjoy your friendly and encouraging style. TTL on my Nikon works about the same: configure for TTL and stick it in the hotshoe and let metering work its magic. I attended a workshop on flash once, and two things stick in my head. Photography is really capturing light to make images. If you compose your image in light, then consider what color light and where you want it coming from. (A frontlit leaf is very different from the same leaf in backlight.) Light can be diffuse or a point source. Direct sun, a bare lightbulb, and direct flash are point sources. Cloudy sky, light bouncing off a wall, and a diffused flash are diffuse sources. Maybe you want one type or maybe both for your image.

In my experience TTL works pretty well with off camera flash too, at least if the flash is close to the camera. I nearly always shoot macro with the camera in one hand and the flash in the other and then TTL usually works fine. The only time I mount the flash on my camera is when I bring out the 300/2.8 to shoot some birds in the darkness. Even with the lens on my gimbal, off camera flash becomes a bit too cumbersome. I guess I could use one of those long arms Wimberley makes for mounting a flash directly on the gimbal.

Emilie, Thanks for this and all your helpful videos . I’m a complete novice to flash photography., and am 100% intimidated. Could you create a video, demonstrating how to set up TTL in the menu and/or on the flash on an OM System camera.? Other questions: 1) Do you recommend diffusers for outdoor & indoor macro shots? 2) Do you recommend diffusers for non-macro shots? 3) Is the flash you use the one that came with the OM-1. Thank you for considering this.

So the great news is you don't have to worry about setting up flash in your menu. As soon as you turn your flash on and like you can see in my video put it in TTL, it should work. I would always recommend a diffuser when using your flash. The flash I use is the FL 700 from OM SYSTEM/Olympus. Small, powerful, works great. The flash that comes with the OM-1 is not as powerful and super small.

Hi Emilie. Trying to get my head around flash with macro. I have three options: Godox V860lll with Cygnustech diffuser, x2 Nissin flashes with built in diffuser and Rotolight NEO II flashes from D-Tap battery. I do not use TTL and cannot do this with Rotolights. Manual is my only choice. Flash lighting is interesting 🧐😊

Thanks for the video Emilie. Using manual flash for almost all the time. With TTL I had a little bit increased focus issues as the shot takes little longer to fire. (maybe less coffee is a solution here as well 😅)

WOW ¡¡¡¡¡ Thank you very, very, very much. A very useful video. What I have observed (I think) is that using the flash I don´t have to much care about the photometer (underexpose), I use f/16 and a speed of about 1/250s and then see the result. I think that the fastest speed of the flash is 1/250s.? Once again, thank you very much.

Thanks for this. I have an Olympus 600R and is it possible it does not have TTL setting? I also have a Godox for my Nikon. Will a Nikon Godox work with EM 1 MK 2?

  • @MrComint

yes it will work but only in manual mode, TTL won't work. I use a OM1 with an old Nikon SB-80-DX , all set manually and the results are good. You can also trigger the godox with the little FL-LM3 flash deliver with the EM1-MK2.

I've never used TTL, always benn told to put it in manual. Will try it in TTL now. What does the zoom function on the flash achieve. Do I need to change that if I have a diffuser on?

  • @EmilieT

    @EmilieT

    7 ай бұрын

The beauty of TTL is that the zoom will automatically change depending on the focal length of your lens. So basically you don't have to worry about it.
