Vietnamese here. Actually the actual reason why he pulled the game from stores were not actually mainly because of international media & press, it was because of our OWN press. Vietnamese gaming outlets and even national television at that time were praising him and overblowed the situation tenfold to promote "national pride" or something like that. Several other big game companies in Vietnam (which i won't detail the names here) went against Dong and even threatened to sue him or "report" him to the government over all the tax money he "avoided" from all the money he got from ad revenue (which he reportedly paid fully). It was the "success" on his own home country (Vietnam) led to his decision to withdraw the game to avoid further confrontation and national limelight. I hope Wavy could see this, hope this would clear something.

I have a serious question for you then, why the hell do you guys always seem to yell and talk so angrily towards eachother? It could be two long lost sisters who havnt seen eachother in years and they could have never had a disagree with eachother in their entire lives and as they get closer and hug while saying the nicest and sweetest things to eachother however it will sound like the two of them are having a massive fight with eachother as the volume to both of their voices drastically increases to the point of anyone who does not speak and understand the language will seriously think a massive fight is taking place. Great people, amazing food, beautiful country yet you guys like to yell at eachother when just talking normally haha

We talk really loud and dont control our volume which shows that we consider a someone we perceives as close enough to us that we dont have to care being formal to them at all thus resulting in what you perceive as "yell and talk so angrily at eachother".

@@SoCaliSurfer13 it's probably just bc you don't understand the language. It's kinda like that a little bit in English too. Kinda like you haven't seen your friend in awhile and you go "Hey! Oh my Gosh, I haven't seen you in awhile! How are you doing?" while excited doing handshake and stuff like that. I actually noticed this in other cultures too. I work at a grocery store and I see Thai people, Chinese people, and even Afican people do this lol. It's just that bc I dont understand their language, it just sounds loud and somewhat angry to me too. But I know it's not like that bc I see that they do laugh and stuff like that lol

He missed one of the juiciest details... For about a week there were iphone 4's with Flappy Bird installed being snapped up for up to $5k on eBay. You absolutely had no way to install the game once it was pulled from the app store, so an iphone with this game installed suddenly became this crazy collector's item - a fad that lasted for about six days. It was nuts, and no amount of jailbreaking or blob downgrading could fake having the app installed at the time. Also, there were fairly solid rumours at the time that the reason he pulled the app and disappeared is because his own government was literally hunting him down with mercs. The story felt legit, it was vaguely about them considering him an embarrassment to the nation as well as claiming he was pulling some kind of racketeering scheme.

The dude released the game to success, and the media slammed him for making a “world destroying” game. They shamed him for his small project born by his passion for game development and stripped him of every sense of accomplishment he might’ve gotten from his own creation. Then when he took the game down, the media was at it again. They refused to believe a human would act without malign intentions, and instead decided to fabricate theories about how he was a greedy man that only took his game down to avoid a lawsuit. Everywhere he went, the media was close behind, attempting to destroy his reputation for internet outrage. I’m glad they didn’t destroy his dreams. This guy is still doing what he loves: making games.

It’s also entirely possible that after it became public it was him behind the game, and his parents, friends, etc got wind that he had to be making money from it, he became increasingly pressured to give gifts of money, pay for things or to other people and effectively have those around him turn to greedy / demanding behaviors. That is incredibly common when someone wins a lottery, gets a good sized inheritance, suddenly starts receiving a very large paycheck, etc. Maybe that is the control over his own life he was referring to. Shut down the game -> Turn off the $$ faucet -> Pressures for handouts disappear. A lot of times the mental health issues developed by sudden fame or fortune aren’t from within, but from everyone around the person suddenly treating the person with conditions, expectations and otherwise completely differently. It’s a possibility.
