Actually, none of the three fuels burns as a liquid, but only as a gas. However, gasoline has a high vaporization rate, even at room temperature, so there is always a thin layer of vaporized gasoline on top that can ignite, triggering a reaction that generates localized heat, and this heat causes the underlying liquid gasoline to vaporize even faster, fueling the fire. The other two fuels, on the other hand, hardly evaporate at room temperature. However, if they are sprayed into very fine droplets, the heat of the flame is sufficient for some droplets to evaporate and ignite, creating enough heat to also vaporize the rest in a chain reaction. In the engine, the cylinder compresses the air, which becomes extremely hot as a result, and only then is the fuel finely atomized and sprayed into the cylinder, where the same reaction takes place.

I have to say I'm glad they gave Kari a pair of gloves this time when using that deathtrap Grant built. The tongs have exposed metal tangs that run the full length of the handle and can be touched while holding the handle. Watching her hold those things last time they tested a defib 'myth' was fucn scary.

So your saying you found the experience... shocking? In all seriousness, I was a medic once upon a time, and defibrillators also don't work how they (in the show) think they do. They check voltage signals and look for a heart that is in fibrillation - which is a fancy way of saying it is beating out of sequence. The jolt is applied to correct the timing sequence. So, in practicality either the voltage sensors would trigger or the heartbeat wouldn't be detected, and it wouldn't do anything. It also wouldn't work if they were trying to use it through soaked clothing etc, as a protection for the person applying it. There is quite a bit of logic in the boards that run the AEDs and even the manual ones. So while I love the show and loved grant, the truth is this doesn't really match a real defibulator...

I know this is an *old* action movie trope, but I admit the chief thing I think of with flaming fuel chasing a car is the film clip to Radiohead's Karma Police.

As for explosion, the gasoline inside the tank cannot burn, because there is too little air inside the tank and no way for exhaust fumes leave. Even if the tank is open, there will be too little gasoline-air-mixture, as the volume of the tank is too small for an explosion. In movies they shoot large amount of gasoline into the air and ignite that and that's what creates those huge fireballs but with a real gas tank, that would never happen. Every year thousands of cars catch fire and if the fire is not extinguished, they'll burn out completely, but they never explode. Even for the case that the fire gets so hot that pressure is building up inside the gas tank, those tanks are built in such a way, that if the inner pressure gets too high, they intentionally fail, break open and let all the fuel just run out. That avoids that they could burst as that may create a bunch of gasoline shooting into the air like in a movie. When people die in a car fire, it's because they burn to death or because they are killed by exhaust fumes but never because of an explosion. Gun powder however is a different story: I produces its own oxygen, so it always has enough oxygen to go off, even within a sealed container. And when burning, it produces a lot of vapor that often cannot quickly enough escape a container, building up huge amounts of pressures inside that container until it bursts and it's that bursting which causes the explosion, as every quick release of high pressure has the effect we know from explosions. Pretty much all explosives work by quickly multiplying their volume, creating a shock wave and it's that wave which actually destroys things around it.

Oil vapors though can explode with serious power. There is an instance of an indonesian oil tanker that was empty and had finished balasting exploding with enough force to blast the enormous ship apart and throw the 3 stories tall castle over 200 meters away as well as blow apart pretty much everything in the section of the harbor next to it.

Because it's the vapour mixed with oxygen that burns, not the liquid. Inside the tank there is no oxygen. The vapor exiting the cap and mixing in an appropriate stochiometric ratio is what's burning. This can be extinguished by simply covering the source of the vapour. Don't try this yourself, though.

This guy didn't need to get shot 😂 Could have done the same thing a baseball bat. A lot of the time this exact same scenario ends with the gun in the hands of the criminal. In NO way was a firearm needed in this case and was most likely the most dangerous factor in this incident. A house is essentially a fortress, a lot easier to defend from inside than to attack from the exterior. This was excessive force and may have only happened BECAUSE there was a gun in the house in the first place.

Mythbusters was one of the worst shows on television. I hated it when it was airing and I hate it now. It would be alright and maybe even entertaining if they didn't call everything they did "science". They don't do science. Everything done under the proviso of that term though cheapened the word and made for a bunch of ignorant people. Adam also pisses me off to this day. He's memorized a lot of stuff, but he's a smoothbrain. The show was originally concepted - and the first episodes were - specifically about testing the Darwin Award winners. It should have stopped there.
