Flamenco: Last of the castanet makers? BBC News

Subscribe to BBC News / bbcnews
There are few more Spanish sounds than the "click" of a pair of castanets. Their rhythm is the bedrock of flamenco. Few know the complexity and craftsmanship involved with castanets better than Juan Vela. He started in the business at the age of seven and is the fourth generation of his family to practise the trade. Now, with more than 50 years experience, Juan is almost unique in making castanets in the traditional way. BBC News visited Juan at his studio in Seville to find out more about the art behind this captivating sound.

I saw an elderly woman perform in a lounge when I visited Spain. She had everything; the castanets, the shawl and the dress. It was great to watch. 10/10 :)

Flamenco is a great dance and tradition. The dance is very precisely, intensely and emotionally choreographed from the movement of the eyes to the twirling of the skirt. The sound of castanets is very much part of the dance and the tradition. Kudos to the Vela family for keeping this tradition alive.

As a young woman my aunt Amelia was a flamenco dancer and used castañuelas during her performances. Now she is 102 years old and when I visit her I bring along a pair of castañuelas and a Spanish hand fan and we watch flamenco KZreads while she sings and plays her castañuelas.

It would be a terrible loss! I love Spanish music and Castanets. I hope that the gowns and Castanets never die out! Flamenco is amazing. I wish more men used them. There is a scene in a movie about Goya where a guy is dancing to Boccherini's Fandango. It's fantastic! Thanks for sharing this! I Definitely have to own a pair.

Castanets is the kicky part of this art, spent many years in Jerez de la frontera and I never heard castanets. Castanets are used in other parts of Spain and the Americas for tourists who have a unreal idealized idea of what Flamenco music is, she might as well put a rose in her mouth.

Came here to say this, thank you! Some people have confused this video as suggesting flamenco is dying. Flamenco is alive and well and evolving which is what it does magnificently. People expect it not to change which is ridiculous. Rock music from the 50’s compared to today sounds incredibly different. Why should flamenco be different? Most castanets use is just for tourists anyway like you said. I’ve never seen or heard them used but then again I stayed away from touristy tablaos in Spain.

I can't believe that a man can make a living making only castanets. They're lovely but he has a fine woodworking shop. Why doesn't he diversify?

  • @pandaantonline390

Well, some people only eat ramen, and nothing else. Should they diversify? Probably... More so because it is a medical/mental disorder in some cases. Needless to say, he probably doesn't need to diversify until the need to arises. Personally I would get bored doing the same thing... But it's a matter of perspective and it's always appreciated to have the specialty in craftsmanship as some people do.

  • @PaulTheSkeptic

Panda Ant Online Well, if that's what one wants to eat that's different although I can't imagine that being very healthy. Diversification in the way I mean is generally just good business. I guess you have a point though. Doing one craft and doing it really well, well, there is something to be said for that but just castanets seems a little too narrow to me. Maybe he could specialize in only solid wooden percussion instruments for example. That would still be very specialized and still broaden his potential customer base substantially.

  • @monelleny

What a very odd question! Why doesn't he do what you would like him to do, rather than what he wants to do? Wow. Further, I suggest that you probably have no idea how much diversification there is in the making of castanets (I certainly don't). Why should Steinway make only pianos? Why should Maria Calas sing only opera? Why should Muddy Waters only sing the blues? Why shouldn't great guitar makers also make banjos? Like I say, I don't get your question at all. He may have all the customers he can handle. If he loves doing it, and people want to buy them, why should he do something different?!?
