FLAMED OUT: What Happened To The Dragon? DRAGAN BENDER! Stunted Growth

Спорт

With one of the coolest basketball names ever, Dragon Bender received a lot of notoriety from an early age. It helped he grew to 7 foot faster than most, and actually looked the part in his early years, as the next star from Croatia that could possibly make the NBA. His timing was impeccable too, with his biggest NBA comparison Kristaps Porzingis being drafted a year before him in the same forth overall position, hyped just the same, and actually had a solid, all rookie first team year. There were a lot of expectations for Dragan and he didn't get off to a good start, not did things become more productive over his first few seasons. Years later the Dragon is out the league at 25 years old, 22 since he last played, says he’ll likely stay in Europe for a while, and considered one of the biggest draft bust of the 2010s. Dragan Bender, was supposed to be the next Euro superstar. FLAMED OUT: What Happened To The Dragon? DRAGAN BENDER! Stunted Growth

As european myself....i am not a fan of NBA teams drafting players that not even did good in euroleague(europe tournament of best 18 teams in europe) Dragan Bender when he was drafted averaged like 0.7 points a game in euroleague...similar thing with Mario Hezonja..he did better but he averaged like 6 points in Barcelona...but with Dragan Bender...basically NBA scouts was on Porzingis hype..so they saw another 7 footer that shoots threes and drafted it

Seriously sad for Bender! But it wasn't the only one bust of the post Nash era. Remember Marquese Chriss or Josh Jackson?!?

You can’t expect this from any player home grown or foreign. That’s just the roll of the dice. Even if you vet the family and their history it still doesn’t guarantee a thing.

As a Suns fan I was super excited when we drafted him. Being like Dirk was a stretch but could had been a prime Lamar Odom. He was in a perfect spot we didn’t need to much from him but just couldn’t be consistent. He would have 1 hood game then follow by 5 bad ones

When you said you never like it when someone calls the person the next this or the next that I stood up from my couch and gave a standing ovation because I been saying that for years. Let them carve out their own path and maybe they can be that next superstar.

Prospects who put up good stats in Europe should be automatic top 5 imo: Luka, Topic in 2024, Alpy. Hezonja and Bender were projects that appealed the scouts because they were playing against grown man despite being bench warmers and they did show SOME FLASHES of good potential in those few minutes they were playing. I think projects are more between 8-15 in the draft

It is not like he is extremely good at the moment in Europe. he doesn't play for a Euroleague team, but rather for a mediocre to bad Spanish team (Obradoiro). Of course the injury was a major setback, but he is not too likely to become a Euroleague start at the moment

I grew up loving everything NBA in the 80's, 90'sand early 00's. The last 15 years the games have become nearly unwatchable. No passing, no defense, no team play, over-reliance on the 3, inefficient "stars". The list can go on and on. Just boring. Good for Dragan understanding that this style isn't for him. I wish him the best in his career!

To me people like him and Mario Hezonja, is more about the ineptitude of NBA front offices rather than the player. Mario, shouldnt have been drafted that high, or even that year, same with Dragan. Anyone that actually looked at the scouting report for them, and didnt watch a youtube video of highlights would have seen Dragan and Porzingis play completely different. When it gets time to draft, there isnt much basketball played after a young player is on their radar, they probably dont play 5v5 at the combine if they are already projected a higher pick, and just work out... There are a ton of very talented work out warriors, Darko Milicic was one... NBA scouts and NBA front offices are legitimatly the problem. But hey, maybe there is no problem, these 7 footers are like lottery tickets and they just take a big swing. I just think there are too many lazy people that project kids to the next level... even in the US. High School rankings are a f#$king joke most of the time when you look at them, same with the guys projecting the kids from europe.
