Flame Diffuser for BRS-3000T Backpacking Stove

A simple flame diffuser for an ultra lightweight backpacking stove is created from a tea infuser, so that one can use low flame to extend the cooking abilities of stoves like this one. An egg is scrambled and cooked to show that there is no scorching, no burning, and no problems with using the flame diffuser as intended with a low flame.
My advice is to always use the lowest gas flow possible that still gets the job done without worrying about the time it takes.
The tea infuser shown was purchased at Target for US$5 and makes two flame diffusers.
WARNING: DO NOT USE HIGH FLAME or HIGH GAS FLOW with this flame diffuser or with this stove in general. One can boil water with a low flame without a flame diffuser given enough time. Gas stoves, fire, and flames are DANGEROUS!
Have you made a flame diffuser that you can show us? Thanks!

    Weird...I literally use one of those tea pods and a BRS stove to make morning tea. I'm watching this video and looking at both items

    What makes a good flame diffuser? IMHO: 1. Diffuses the flame without impeding gas flow! 2. Does not cause flames to go backwards toward the gas canister or stove valve. 3. Attaches/detaches easily and securely. 4. Is thin so that it fits above the normal flame orifice and below the pot stand so that a pot does not touch diffuser. 5. Is lightweight and fits within the existing cook kit, such as under the gas canister. 6. Is durable and long lasting. 7. Works to keep food in the cook pots from burning or scorching.

    Hey mate, got to say this is genius. I just got a BRS3000T and instantly ran into the issue of its intense hotspot heating. Worked ok when boiling water in a pot but as soon as I tried to fry anything in the cheap aluminium pot/pan set I have, it instantly started overheating one spot and causing warping. Even on the lowest setting. These tea diffusers are like $1.50AUD at Kmart, so I'm going to give this a go. Actually, already have one at home but I don't think my GF would appreciate me destroying her tea infuser haha

    Thanks! Let us know how it worked. The infuser/diffuser I bought has the perfect diameter to clip into the 3 legs of the stove which might be important. And don't forget that one shouldn't use their stove on full blast with this.

    Thick aluminum spreads heat all by itself. If you want to demonstrate heat diffusion cook the egg in a lightweight Toaks titanium pot.

    Nice craftsmanship, but however I am unclear about what the actual benefit is. It would be helpful if you did a with vs without video to show the difference if any. Without any measurable benefit I am not going to add weight to my cook system. Aluminum pans typically do a good job at distributing the heat over the surface area of the pan.

    Love this! I do wonder about effeciency, do you need more time/gas when cooking with this? Could you maybe try to do a test by boiling water and see whether it takes more (or less) time when using it?

    I measure efficiency by weight (mass) of gas used and NOT by time. This flame diffuser is NOT for boiling water faster, but for having a widely spread flame that spreads the heat in order to cook things like eggs. GearSkeptic here on KZread has a video about stove and pot efficiency.

    When cooking without burning, a smaller flame is even preferred, but for the sake of knowing, if you use a high flame from the BRS does it melt or catch fire? Did you experience that? Thank you.

    I kindly suggest to check the canister top temperature when using a heat diffuser. Heat diffusers will radiate heat as infrared light and this may overheat the canister.

    I understand that you have a Titanium Pot but was the stove in the test with your diffusor, a Titanium pot? Doesn't Aluminim spread the heat more evenly than Titanium? Would a diffusor be necessary for an Aluminum Pot if using your BRS 3000 Stove?

  • @jimpflugrath6220

    @jimpflugrath6220

    The stove was a titanium stove. The pan was thick aluminum. Yes, I think this particular pan spreads the heat more evenly than a thin titanium pan would. I don't know if a diffuser would be necessary for this BRS stove with this particular aluminum pan or not, since I did not even try that combination. Maybe one day I will test that. Thanks!

    Hello, I copied your idea. However, I noticed that the design of the burner is extremely hot in the lower area. frighteningly hot. Through this system, it radiates large amounts of heat downwards. After a short time I could hardly touch the burner. however, this is possible in normal operation.

  • @jimpflugrath6220

    @jimpflugrath6220

    Indeed. I am not sure what you mean by "burner" though. Also does the "burner" get just as hot when you do not use the flame diffuser? The stove will get hot simply from the conductance of the heat through the connected metal parts, therefore one should use the lowest flame (i.e. gas flow) possible I would think.
