    Hello guys, I have just got myself an xpower, i do agree that it doesnt go around corners as well as a proper hot hatch(i have had numerous over the years- the latest being an audi s3 8v) I am nearing retirement age and the MG is a perfect compromise, its far more comfortable and much cheaper to run than the s3, and its great fun blasting away from most cars up to speed limit speeds, which i try to stay below nowadays being a responsible old fogey :)

    Have driven the XPower not the Honda. Here in urban Australian a car like the Honda would drive me mad. Manual gearboxes are ok for a short squirt but not in traffic. The XPower without trying will gap traffic from the lights. Oddly although miles faster it didn’t seem to push you back in the seat as much as a standard Tesla Model 3 Highland 2024 test driven last week. The Tesla is a super sporty drive.

    As the lads said, for the vast majority of people the XPower is going to be the choice but if you want to spend nearly £15k extra you can have a car that's been tuned and crafted for 20+ years to perfection. So it just makes the XPower look even more impressive for MG's first ever go at making a hot hatch EV. As I'm not a racing driver wannabe into doing track days the XPower would be the daily choice for me as well. Like it or not ice cars are nearly over, the future is electric whether it's battery or alternatively powered. Change is difficult for many people but it's inevitable and unavoidable so best just go with it. 👍

    So, what if the price difference of £12,000 was spent on upgrading the MG's suspension, tyres and front seats? That's a lot of money simply for suspension, tyres and seats and then it would be much nearer comparible on price. Maybe a couple of grand left for an ECU remap taking it to 500hp. Remember, this is the first iteration of the MG Xpower, there's already an interior revamp coming in 2nd half of this year.

  • @BuckleUpShow

    Apart from maybe changing the front seats any of that other work would invalidate your 7 year warranty. Also you can't "ECU remap" an EV

    but the XPOWER is the First "electric" hot hatch ever made.. so maybe its not as good as the best of the old Hot hatch, i do agree on that.. But what else is there in "Electric" that comes close to that HOT HATCH, beware of the price, instate of jelling "Porsche taycan" is the best. that car cost 4 times more for the cheapest model and that is big car so its NOT a hot Hatch.. not even the Cupra Born is really a hot hatch, the fastest is too slow to be "HOT". and this Honda R you testing is really good but unpayable in Insurance that is NOT for the common man, and that is NOT the case of the Xpower. that's why i did buy the MG4 Xpower in anders gray

  • @BuckleUpShow

    @BuckleUpShow

    Well technically there's the Abarth, but it's even slower than the Born and more expensive than the MG. It's a massive price leap before you find more performance oriented EVs (Tesla performance, Ioniq 5n l, Kia EV6 GT) the MG seems pretty much in a class of one at the moment

    I thought the Mini Cooper SE from 2-3 years ago was the first electric hot hatch? It "only" weighs 1440kg, which is 500kg less than the MG4 X Power, unless I'm mistaken? I though the consensus was that, by keeping the kerb weight within 100kg of the ICE Cooper S, that the Cooper SE is not only the first electric hot hatch but also a very good electric hot hatch?🙂

    I've never heard that claim about Honda engines being reversed engineered (literally) Morris engines. It could be true. But it seems very unlikely given Honda was already making inline-six Grand Prix bike engines and V12 Grand Prix car engines in the 1960's, and that the 1969 Honda Coupe 9 had a 1300cc air-cooled engine making 116p @ 7500rpm (which Morris engine was capable of that at the time?). Hyundai are pretty well known for "inspired" engines though, the Hyundai 4.6L V8 is *very* similar to the Ford Modular 4.6L V8.

    It's a bit of an urban legend really, I can't find a concrete reason anywhere just lots of speculation. Some people say it's because they started with bike engines where them spinning anti clockwise is more common for packaging reasons. Others say it's because in a FWD car with the steering wheel on the right hand side as it is in Japan you offset the weight of the driver by having the engine on the other side of the engine bay. My favourite is that by the engine turning anti clockwise it was considered less likely any bolts would work themselves loose from engine vibration, like the way Rolls Royce used to have backwards threaded wheel nuts on one side of their cars. The mirror blueprint story only basis in fact in Japanese manufacturers did come to British companies in the 50s and 60s to observe as part of rebuilding Japan's post war industry because at the time we were one of the world leaders in making vehicles for export. Similar to how Rover went to the US to try and learn how to make V8 luxury cars and ended up coming back with the tooling for the 3.5 litre V8 that had been developed by Buick to slide into their new P5.

    The civic is too wide for the country roads around here and the ride looks too hard based on all that jiggling in the video. P.S. loving my Xpower and it’s like always having a ‘full tank’ with home charging AND I now get super cheap overnight electric at 1/4 the price of normal rate for the whole house!.

  • @BuckleUpShow

    The Civic is narrower than the XPOWER and the jiggling is because the Type-R was in Sport mode. In comfort, the suspension is much more compliant.

    @@BuckleUpShow Nope. Civic 189cm, xpower 184cm excl mirrors. The xpower doesn’t jiggle even in sport mode. I got fed up with hard suspension from my last car a cooper S. Personal preferences apply. Xpower is a good balance for me.

    The Civic is 1890mm wide with mirrors. The MG is 2060mm wide with mirrors. The MG doesn’t ‘jiggle’ in sports mode because it doesn’t have adaptive suspension like the Type-R does.

  • @TassieLorenzo

    @@BuckleUpShowAlso because the X Power has very soft suspension, it's about at the level of a Golf R or A45 AMG going by L'Argus -- quite a lot of roll on L'Argus Nurburgring testing. Though the Type R is possibly too stiff for non-Japanese tastes, and the Integra Type S suspension control module that makes each suspension mode one step softer is probably better suited to international tastes.

    EV owners rave about their cars, they'll probably never understand how wrong they are because they'll never drive something decent. I test drove the Xpower and honestly, my 8 year old 308 GTi was way more fun. You can hear the second guy drive the Honda fairly subdued "I've realised I was wrong, I didn't appreciate just how wrong I was" is what that tells me 😂

  • @BuckleUpShow

    @BuckleUpShow

    7 ай бұрын

    The 308 GTi is one of the lightest modern hot hatches, some 200 kg lighter than the type R, I suspect it would be as much or more fun than a lot of the current crop of hatches thanks just to that. I was quiet in the type R because it's a more involving drive so I was literally concentrating more, but like we said in the video the fact the X power is not a finessed and is much heavier and more powerful than a trad hot hatch it's a different sort of fun.

    I have owned many hot hatchbacks over the years, including the FK2 Type R, and currently own a Hyundai I30N with a manual gearbox. You're comparing chalk and cheese. The CTR is regarded as the most driver focussed hatch currently on sale but not as good as the previous FK8 it replaced. A friend of mine has the MG, and it's having nothing but issues with charging and the in-built app with no imminent fix coming. A combustion engine can not be compared to the instant torque of any EV. However, they have their place, which is a separate topic. I wouldn't call the CTR the best car ever, and to compare it to the current gen of Porsches is just ludicrous.

    Completely agree with you the Civic is the better car because it’s actually a hot hatch and has everything to make it one. The MG has nothing more than take an EV stiffen the suspension a little and stick a high power motor in it. No great skill to produce it and it’s just a fast in a straight line Chinese budget box.

I can’t really understand why you’re so hung up on that. Would you rather we couldn’t see while driving? Just a really bizarre thing to take issue with. Care to explain why owning a Dacia means we can’t effectively review any cars?
