For my biggest parka, I added some straps (like backpack straps) inside the parka from the back of the neck to the side of the waist on each side. If I go from sedentary to active, I can unzip and take my arms out and the backpack straps keep it on my back but easily accessible to slip my arms back in and zip up again when I need to. Thanks for the review on the Fjallraven parka!

Note that the Nuuk has been upgraded for the winter of 22/23. So, my wife and I both bought the old Nuuk on deep blow out in the Spring of this year. There are still a few of the old model around--weird sizes mostly at this point. We got ours for standing around waiting to catch the bus up here in Canada. Hasn't been cold enough yet to use it yet. I would say, the Yupik is better... because it has the draw cord at the BOTTOM of the jacket instead of higher up. Apart from that, it is indeed one of the best synthetic filled winter parka I have had - and I have quite a few - but, nothing beats a good down filled winter parka like a Bergans Lava or a The North Face McMurdo parka or one of the many models of a Nobis down parka. Forget about Canada Goose: these are, despite their very high price, NOT waterproof (and I am the one to know this, with a Chateau, a Langford, a Manitoba and an expedition parka in my collection).

I got the older model that’s almost 20 years now. I live in Scandinavia and use it as my winter jacket almost daily. It’s still in mint condition! The only thing that has broken is the textile flappy thing on the zip, but that’s not really an issue. The best thing on my jacket is the small outside chest pocket. I have my wallet there so I don’t have to unzip the jacket to get to it. Love this jacket. It’s like wearing a comfortable and cozy “dyne” (tick blanket).

Nice review! I bought the men's parka last year and it is my go to parka for fall and teh start of winter, even when damp spring time. It breathes very well. I have worn it in 40 degree temps just fine and also in the mid 20s with a single layer underneath. Below that temperature I found that I needed a base layer and a sweater underneath. But it is plenty roomy to accommodate those extra layers. I bought a large and I am 6ft1 210 lbs and it fits fine. The collar is snug which I like because it stops cold air getting inside so a scarf isn't really needed. The hood is large and fits fine with a beanie underneath, otherwise it blocks your vision, even with the hood adjuster all the wat back. I thought about adding another velcro later behind this to pull the hood further back. Although it is a heavy coat by nature of its synthetic insulation and thick canvas like shell it doesn't feel heavy when wearing it. As it breathes so well I can walk the dog in it without sweating much. I think there are 11 pockets which is amazing. I have worn it in a real downpour and it kept me totally dry, A little bit of water did make its way into the hand pockets, perhaps because the water runs down your arms and into the pocket. The coat does take a while to dry out. I am thinking of getting one for my wife and it seems to fit you very well.

Yes, the "old fashion" model with a high stand collar and removable hood is seriously superior to what I see most often now: NO collar at all and the jacket just ends into a fixed hood. Numerous brands have this construction only or offer maybe one model like this Nuuk parka. Fjallraven has to be praised for that. Less happy I am with the fact they removed the draw cord from the very bottom of the parka as was the case with the Yupik. Now, the bottom is ALWAYS too wide, letting precious body heat escape. But otherwise, it's a parka that has very few weak points - if any! Numerous sound recordists and friends alike bought this parka after they tried mine. In the beginning, I took up to ten(!) jackets with me so they had a real choice and could try all kinds of jackets, but in the end... I only took my Yupik and said: "THIS is gonna be your next parka - just take it home, try it, and you'll see for yourself!" Out of 7 people who tried it 6(!) actually bought it. That says all...

In Canada or even new york, a parka is indespensible. Layers are great when you're outside. But when you're walking through the freezing cold between centrally heated buildings, it helps to have one big layer. In my first year of college I ordered a Russian "bekesha" which is a military sheepskin coat, its warmer than anything I own, but way too heavy for the commute. Suffered through it and got a us military primaloft jacket for the next year.

I would be very careful with that Yupik, I also have them, and the Nuuk is no upgrade for me... on the contrary. They removed the draw cord from the bottom, so it will ALWAYS be too wide there for slender people like me. "So warm" is relative. I would say it's moderately warm. OK, for a synthetic filled parka it is warm indeed. But... if it has to be really warm, nothing beats a good warm down parka, like the Bergans Lava (no longer available) or the The North Face McMurdo (NOT McMurdo2 as this one also misses that bottom draw cord!!) and if it has to be even warmer: take a Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero or an Arcteryx Cold WX parka SVX. Ohh great question! The Nuuk is our go-to when we know we are going to be outside in temps below 32f/0c but it is admittedly a bit bulky if you are getting in or out of a car, dealing with public transit or biking. I (Dylan) have the Skogso padded jacket and love it for everyday use. We'll have a review on it shortly, but you'll see it if you go through our early 2023 videos. I'd personally go with the Skogso, just size it so you can add a nice warm layer on colder days. We have not tried the Greenland Jacket yet, but as I understand it does not have insulation so you would need a quality layer underneath.

Any advice on the zipper and in general between the two parkas.

  • @Western-Wild

Great question Gary! I actually got used to the location of the zipper pretty quickly, my bigger complaint is that the zipper itself is a little finicky and can be tricky to get lined up with gloves on. Bottom line: The Nuuk is likely to be more durable in the long run, and in our opinion looks better. The McMurdo is generally less expensive, and may be a little bit warmer based on the 600 fill down.

The McMurdo is a down filled parka and as such, has a greater comfort-range. It also is water proof, has lots of pockets and if you take the regular McMurdo (NOT the McMurdo2!!) then you still have a draw cord at the BOTTOM of the parka, which was omitted / re-positioned by Fjallraven, from the bottom to the waist when going from the Yupik to the Nuuk parka. Hi! Thank you for the great review! I've been looking for a good winter parka to brave the Midwestern winters, and the Nuuk checked all the boxes. My only issue is the sizing, I'm 5'2" and 130 lbs and the women's S was too big (the sleeves were so long on me) and it was a bit too roomy for my liking, the XS fits a bit better (sleeves are good), but now it's a bit tighter than I'd like (it zips and buttons fine, I can wear a chunky sweater underneath, but it's definitely snug...like I wish I just had half an inch more room). Did Tessa come across this issue? I do love how warm it is. It's amazing! And the sleeves and length are so perfect on me. I just wish I had a bit extra room around the torso area and hips. As a novice, I'm not sure if I should just return it and accept that the Nuuk is just not meant for my body type...or stick with the XS. I would love your advice please!

Tessa here. I feel your pain on this. I personally am never able to buy things that fit my arm length, jacket arms are ALWAYS too long for me. For this jacket I actually like that because it keeps my hands warmer. Overall I think it depends on your primary use case with this jacket. If it’s going to be your around town jacket I’d maybe put up with it being a little tight with layers or look for something that accommodates layers a bit better. If it’s going to be a hybrid around town/adventure jacket I’d size up to accommodate however many layers you may need. I personally bought the jacket with the hybrid approach in mind. I personally buy most of my jackets with layering in mind because I rarely am able to go with one layer underneath jackets and I’d rather have it be a little loose when they layers aren’t needed but more physically comfortable than be freezing my tail off when the layers are needed. I will NEVER buy Fjallraven products again. Overpriced garbage.

The Singi offers heavier insulation so it will be warmer… but it is only water/wind resistant vs the Nuuk which is advertised as water/wind proof. We went with the Nuuk since the snow where we live tends to be wetter and wind is a major factor, but for colder/drier environments the Singi would be the way to go. Hope that helps!

Go for a completely different parka, which offers the benefits of both: down fill AND waterproofness. There are just a few of those parkas around unfortunately, and many of them are very expensive. The best all-round option at this moment, after Bergans dicontinued their excellent Lava down parka, with great value for money, is the The North Face "McMurdo". AVOID the McMurdo2!! This one completely misses any kind of drawcords whatsoever, making it a droughty parka. If you can shed out a lot of money, you will not be disappointed by one of the many different down parkas by Nobis either. But these easily cost twice as much as the McMurdo. I have the Nobis Cartel short jacket, and it has become one of my absolute favorites - and I can choose from over 50 BRANDS of down jackets alone, every day, many brands I have several different models from... so, if out of that large bunch of jackets and parkas one is my absolute favorite... that says something about how good it actually is. Oh, before I forget to tell: forget completely about Canada Goose. These are - despite their very high price - NOT waterproof!! I can know this, with a total of 5 different Canada Goose down jackets and -parkas in my collection. I only have them because I have waterproof jackets and parkas also - their fit and model is really good. But if you want to buy just ONE "fit for all purposes" parka (as especially most MEN seem to want) then Canada Goose must be ruled out.

Would this be a good coat for the Great Lakes region? It is a damp, wet, windy, and a humid cold.We also get a lot of wet lake effect snow along with sleet, cold rain, freezing rain, rain snow mix along with a mix of ice in our precipitation. It also can snow really hard here with blizzards.

@@scrapper276 I bought both. Tried them on and ended up keeping the singi and returning the nuuk. Both would be really good options for any cold but the Nuuk is more like a snowboard jacket whereas the singi is more of a stylish jacket parka style. It’s great at the ski hill in all kinds of weather.
