Hi Ted. Fantastic review. Great comparison, pros and cons and demonstrating the differences with them both on at the same time. I was about ready to drop almost a months worth of pay to get both to solve the problem of not know which one to get, ha, but Ted to the rescue. Based on the video, the Keb would be my choice for what I would need/want. Have a good day and safe hikes. Peace.

HI Ted. Another compelling video, as usual. I ended up going with the Bergtagen for, among other things, its support for layering, deep hood and elbow reinforcements -- things that complement my backcountry canoeing. You're right about the velcro straps at the wrists: if I'm portaging a canoe in the rain, the loose wrist fit will be an invitation for the rain. : ) Looking forward to more videos. Btw, would love to see you join one of the backcountry KZreadrs here in Canada on a short trip where you can demonstrate various things. Would be cool. Cheers.

@@TedWeirum I know of couple of them, but the guy that stands out is "Zold Outdoors." He speaks about the wilderness, being outdoors, with unusual and eloquent simplicity, grace, insight and depth. Nature is his element. And, so in this regard I suspect the two of you would be very compatible...pretty impressive considering his relative youth. I recommend and encourage you to check him out. Perhaps start with "Nature Remains" (kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGekmtKoYqu1aM4.html). He also collaborated with others to make this short film: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaZ5rteFopCviKQ.html --- If you do get a chance to watch him, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Oh, and by the way, check out his canoeing-type vids.

Ted, the thing about the "Nature Remains" video is that you'll find that the "adventure" in his other videos support his commentary in this one. I love his Clearwater hiking video, and I'm not even a hiker. I backcountry canoe. But, still, it's the same language. And, if you ever drop by Canada, it would be cool to trip somewhere... Cheers.

That was a very nice comparison video! I was sure of it already, but this video only confirmed it even more: I didn't make a mistake choosing the Keb over a year ago :-) The only thing that would make it even beterer are the reinforced elbows. That really is a great plus on the Bergtagen. The video itself, while still being stunning imagery, felt less "overproduced" then a previous time. And I really like that! Keep on rockin'!

The chest pocket on the Keb jacket is awesome for keep a compact midsize binocular. Fullsize bino:s are still too bulky and pocket bino:s have too bad optics. So the stretchy pockets allowed me to go from pocket size to compact size binos at hikes.

I have used the Bergtagen eco shell for several years, tested it extensively in wild mountain conditions . It is very tough and well made. However, in my view, it fails on waterproofing; in heavy rain water will come through the zips and even fill up the chest pockets with water! The zips need to be improved.

Bergtagen has ripstop eco Shell, i dont think the keb has it. One minus about the keb, the seams on the bottom of the Chest pockets Are not taped. So after a looong day in the rain, the Water somehow found its way inside the pocket, through these seams... so my phone was waterdamaged.(did not have it inn the mesh pocket). Other than that, great jacket. But when i needed a new size (from medium to large), i opted for the Arcteryx beta sv.

  • @TedWeirum

I suppose you could, however I think it would be a bit too much with hoods and all, a fleece or some sort of middle layer is what I’d recommend if you’re looking for warmth, even a thinner down jacket would fit. Once you start to move you are often times good to go with just a T-shirt or a long sleeved base layer! Hope that answers your question buddy!

@@TedWeirum I think that the designers could have made it so that these duel jackets fit each other and that is why the shell is so light weight. You can easily pack the shell into a side carrying bag. It is my impression that I am to attempt to complete the outfit, so far having keb trousers and keb ecoshell pants. Now I need the top half. The jacket to wear is the keb or bertagen jacket and when it is harder conditions than add the ecoshells. Ofcourse people will do other things but at least it might be understood that this is the way to complete these two families of clothing. I myself have a snug fitting keb ecoshell anarok but I did not conceive of this before I bought that but it's okay, I can go in the opposite direction with the anorak no. 8 as the outer coat, it works.

The Bergtagen having a longer length is so clutch. Keb has more pockets and better functionality, but the length on the Bergtagen is really clutch. Seems like a fumble not making the Keb as long now that I see it compared.

I would go with the Bergtagen over Keb. I have orange Bergtagen and Teal Keb. Love them both but I feel safer in the orange since in bad weather you see it better. One big miss for all of the fjällräven jackets are the lack of reflectors. Given that it should be a no brained since a reflector is the “cheapest health insurance” as they say. Also the Bergtagen trousers have no way to adjust the height or tightness of the leg-ends. I find it very weird since I’m average height of woman (165) and the trousers are made for some 175-185cm person. So I have to use strap-around to keep the extra 15cm leg-end from getting under my shoes. Quite frustrating to be honest. But discarding those, they are very very very good clothes.

Post Marlone your argument is intriguing since I found my self debating about it but obviously I was too biased since I could not find enough arguments against reflectors particularly in non-camouflage Fjällräven product. Could you be so kind and describe more how it effects negatively: What was you initial thought when one is talking about a reflector. Your argument may be the key why Fjällräven decided not to use only Reccos but not “cat’s-eye” reflectors.

I recently purchased the Keb eco shell and I'm super disappointed. Went to climb Kebnekaise (Sweden's highest mountain) on a rainy/windy day, and I couldn't get the hood to stay on my head for more than a couple of seconds. The wind was hitting directly on my face and it would push the visor up/back yanking the hood out of my head. I tried to adjust it every way possible but as I said, it wouldn't stay put at all. I also noticed that the drawcords on the sides would loosen up pretty quickly as the hood was pushed back by the wind. They don't have those plugs/toggles, I wonder if I am missing something here and there is a way to keep them fastened? I used to have a much cheaper jacket from Fjällräven (discontinued) and the so-called "storm hood" worked great. Too bad that they kinda fucked up the design on this model, especially at this price tag.

  • @e.n.4706

And to add to this I haven't seen a single video or review of the jacket being tested against actual wind (15m/s, 20m/s gusts?) in the mountains. Especially on a climb when you are at an angle and the wind will hit the visor from the under side. If you know of such review, please let me know!

    @TedWeirum

    Жыл бұрын

hmm, it shouldn't be like that, I haven't had the experience that you mention and I have been out in windy conditions. just a shot in the dark here, have you tightened it on the back of the hood? there's a drawcord on the back of the head that you use for securing it to your head. you should also be able to use the drawcords in the front to secure the hood. maybe we can talk on instagram instead and we can share some photos to better understand? you'll find me at instagram.com/tedweiurm

I just got back from a Fjallraven retail store and tried on the brand new Bergtagen Lite Eco Shell. It felt very Keb-like, and does not have the elbow patches. One thing I looked for because of this video was the velcro on the wrists. I am happy to report that they have changed the velcro amount such that you can fully cinch it down tight, in the way you describe at 7:18. They're listening to you, Teddy! I was also disappointed that all of the staff in the store pronounced Bergtagen in the "Bergshell" way and not "Baitagen" as us true and proper Swedes know how to do. Shame! 😉

If you are going to buy one of these jackets online make sure you have a decent returns policy. The sizing on these jackets is bizarre and unless you are of a similar build to Ted more than likely it won't fit. The jacket the guy is using (keb version) is extremely under-sized on him IMHO so it looks like it fits. I am 5' 7" (1m 70cm) and got a small, the arms on my jacket are insanely long in proportion to the body of the jacket, well past being practical for climbing etc.. where slightly longer sleeves are of a benefit.
