I’ve seen people throw in a bottle of shudder fix by lubeguard.. my mechanic said it wasn’t necessary and I didn’t use it on mine.. but some people swear by it.. anyhow, if you have any questions, always feel free to reach out and good luck to you man! 👍🏼🤙🏼

I've been following that forum thread. After hearing your shudder in this video, I'm hoping that cause of my bad vibes isn't TC shudder, but something less worrisome, because what I hear in your video isn't the same as my bad vibes. I'm 6 days from installing brand new Falken Wildpeak AT3 275/70r17 (currently on AT3 in 265) , and less than 30 days from installing the Eibach stage 2R kit, ECGS needle bearing. If I still have bad vibes, I will replace the carrier bearing or likely the entire driveshaft assembly with one directly from Toyota.

WCT, excellent communication on this topic and your experience with resolving this issue. I spoke with John Gobbels (OTT) today in regards to scheduling. I’m just waiting for decent weather to get the tune. I have been doing a 1000 mile brake-in on the new ‘23 Off Road - 55 mph, anything but interstate driving and then an oil and filter change at 1k that I did myself because I would rather do that type maintenance. I am now of the mindset that the sooner one gets this tune, the less stress the drivetrain has to endure and that has to be better for the Tacoma in the long run. You are fortunate to have a “Jason” that you can trust and is willing to let you be there while he services your really fantastic looking TRD Off Road. I know the feeling when turning my vehicle over to a service department and not knowing as they drive away. This will be my daily driver as well and will probably never see any off roading. Because of this video, I will probably have my transmission ATF fluid level checked while it is still new to confirm it is as it should be from the factory. I have a Toyota/Lexus shop here that I can trust for that, not the dealer. At least it will give me some peace of mind on the unknown. And yes, 30,000 mile service interval for me too.

Michael, thanks for the post! Really glad you’re getting a jump on the tune! In my opinion, that should be the number one modification Tacoma owners should do to their trucks as soon as possible. I truly come from a mindset or at least used to… that the manufacturer, is going to tune and build these trucks in the best way that will keep these trucks driving for the longest and keep them running the best.. after getting the tune done, my opinion has been forever changed… at least with the Tacoma.. I think even with the shudder problems.. that the Tacoma would still run for a very long time, but that it’s life span would be decreased significantly at least the powertrain.. once I started having issues I probably put no more than 150 miles on it while I was getting the transmission fluid cycled through and then eventually the torque tune. Finding a trusted source to work on your vehicles is probably one of the most challenging aspects of being an owner of a vehicle… like you mentioned, I am very fortunate to have Jason and his plethora of knowledge on the Tacoma. I’m doing my very best to pass down the information I’m getting from him in hopes that it will help other viewers like yourself that are looking to get the most out of their tacos and best experience from it. A well maintained truck is a longer enjoyed truck. As always thanks for tuning in. Enjoy!

@@westcoasttaco I couldn’t agree with you more on the mindset of what we once automatically assumed about a vehicle’s factory setup. However, as it is, fortunately we have options now that we would not have had in the past. I am really glad to see that your issue was taken care of the way you did and as soon as you were able to. It helps to fortify the confidence I have had in Toyota for decades and continue to have. The way I see it, in large part, Toyota’s value is in their reliability & longevity. I buy them to keep for extended periods of time. The returns are long term in my opinion. As for the tune being the number one mod to the Tacoma you should make after the purchase, YES. John G. told me in an earlier conversation that when he brought his latest Tacoma home from the dealership with a little over 20 miles on it, the tune was the first thing he did to it. Thank you for taking the time to pass this information on to help others!

Awesome video. Now subscribed. I appreciate your honesty and walking us through the process of problem solving. I shake my head because it's hard to know "proper maintenance" especially when the dealership tells us otherwise. Side note. I had to use a 3 ft breaker bar to loosen my oil canister after they used an impact gun. They also didn't even replace rings and the crush washer during an oil change. That broke my trust in dealerships.

It's not just a problem with the torque converter hunting, what you are calling shudder. That occurs at around 45mph when the TCC gets the command to engage. It's also happening at slower speeds like 15-30mph, not a converter issue. Hunting is generally less severe as the TCC engages and chatters or it hunts (engages and disengages rapidly). The low speed shudder can feel like a bucking bronco because its generally shifting back and forth between 2-3 or 3-4 before it makes up its mind. But both issues are usually caused by old trans fluid. It can occur at 30K or at 150K, depending on how the owner uses the truck. I suspect that the friction modifiers in the fluid have broken down. Similar to the friction additive in a limited slip differential. Having clean fresh Toyota ATF WS fluid (or equivalent) will correct the problem 90% of the time. If after a good fluid change the problem still occurs I would disconnect the battery to force the tranny computer to relearn it's shift points. Only after that, if still a problem, would I have the tranny tuned to tweak the shift points. Toyota wants the vehicle in top gear asap for better emissions and MPG. But that is causing driveability problems. There are also some TSB's for certain models that call for updating the trans computer software. All part of the Emissions warranty.

@West Coast Taco my son purchased a 2023 off road in February early on I noticed it seemed to Rev up when I really wasn't hitting pressing the gas that hard but that's gone now. Also noticed a slight studder or hesitation when taking off after slowing for a turn 1 time. But most of all I'd like to know is it normal for the brake pedal to press back against you when starting the truck? You have to press the brake to start but it presses back after starting...maybe I'm press too hard when I start it but this doesn't happen on my 2020 Tundra.

@@dalephillips8250 Yep the brake pedal does push back against you after the start up. That’s totally normal.👍🏼 I’ve even heard that the clutch on the manuals comes back to you slowly when you press it in .. not sure how slow, but it sounded like it did something similar to the break pedal on a start up for the automatics.. I really did notice the shudder when going from a stop into a turn, especially as I was accelerating slightly in the turn.. I wonder if you felt the same thing? I have owned a 2018 SS Camaro, and currently drive a 2020 Hyundai Kona that has the same shudder issue. Similar to the explanation that your service department told you, I was told by my Hyundai service manager was that I could bring my car in to check out my issue, but would be charged $150+ dollars should they not be able to replicate the issue in their opinion. Also that the transmission was sealed, so no fluid change or other servicing could be performed and would just be replaced if Hyundai felt it was warranted.

We bought a brand new 23 model and on the 5th day of ownership it went to misfire. Took it to Toyota dealer and was told it was bad gas. We were told the tank was dropped fuel replaced and system was “cycled”. Cost was $300 becuadro that is not covered under warranty. Got it back after they had driven it as well as my wife, with no problem. After getting home my was gonna go to her zumba class only to call 5 mins after she took off, that the truck was acting up again. Had towed back to the shop and now being told that they are diagnosing injectors and so on. My thought was, why wasn’t this done to start off. Get this bought it 9/4/23 drove it for 201 miles and here we are 9/18/23 tuck still in the shop. Fortunately we do have a loaner but still this does not feel right.

Super true… but the best way is the way this guy did it because for one reason and one reason only as the clutches in the torque converter locks up it slowly scrapes off the varnish that is the lead cause to all of this. Your way is really really great way to exchange fluid but it’s not a flush all you’re doing is moving new fluid in and old fluid out just like a drain and fill because no clutches are scraping off the varnish. Honda trans service is like kind drain and refill 3 time first step was drain and fill drive for two miles repeat 2 more times service is done.

I noticed the TC shudder shortly after purchasing my 23 SR 4x4. Mine was about as bad as your video. I first got the ott light/mild combo. That seemed to help, but I was still able to recreate the shudder. I started using only top tier 87 gas and that too seemed to help, but I could still recreate the shudder with the right conditions. The problem is the overdrive gears. The transmission tries to get in the highest gear as quick as possible, so you end up in 6th gear when you are at the 35-45 mph range. Add the gearing the 6th gear has, the transmissions strange desire to hold a higher gear than it needs, and the little baby v6, and you end up with this TC shudder problem. Toyota does it to increase fuel economy while driveability suffers. I have yet to try 91 gas onl, but that seems to help a lot of people. I have learned to command my truck with s-mode. I have driven it enough to where I know the conditions that cause the shudder. I keep the truck is s5 99% of the time, unless its a really big hill, then I pop it into s4. You don't need 6th gear going under 65 which most roads don't exceed that speed limit around me.

@westcoasttaco I would like to add that checking the atf(I was a 1/4 quart low), using top tier gas, and ott fixed the shudder in almost all situations where I was feeling it. I actually thought I had solved it, but over the weekend, I was going through the Great Smokey mountains in traffic going around 35 mph. It cleared going up a big hill. Hit the gas and it started shuddering. I think premium gas is the last piece of the equation that I'm missing. I think my truck did it from day 1. I just never hit any hills big enough to cause it on the test drive..

My question is on the the flushing procedure you described. There’s several other videos on it on KZread and most go through the connecting certain pins together with a wire in the odb port and putting the transmission in a “self flushing mode” when done correctly it expels excess fluid out of the overfill. Your mechanic did not tell you to do that? Just wondering based on the description of the procedure in the video thanks!

Some of the guys on the Tacoma forum rave about that stuff and have had good results.. let me know how it goes 👍🏼

I’m new to the Tacoma world with a 23 Off Road Taco. I see a lot of videos on the “Pedal Commander?” Would this be a solution? What is the difference, if any? Thanks for a great video!

  • @westcoasttaco

    @westcoasttaco

    Жыл бұрын

Hey Dave! Thank you for tuning in and congratulations on joining the Tacoma world! The Tacoma is really what you make of it… you can leave it stock and live with some of its flaws.. or you can tap in to modifying and adjusting certain portions of the truck that just aren’t refined… and come out with a much better and smoother running machine. So to answer your question… the pedal commander is essentially a switch that intercepts the signal between the gas pedal and the engine. It’s essentially tricking the engine by telling it, that you’re giving it more gas than you really are, regardless of where your foot is really at on the gas pedal. For example, the pedal commander has several different modes in which you can adjust the way that the signal is interpreted by the engine.. so giving it a little gas on eco-mode will feel a lot different than giving it a little bit of gas on sport plus mode.. at the end of the day the tune is technically and probably arguably the “right” way to fix a lot of the engine, transmission, and lack of power that the Tacoma gives you from the factory.. all of the power, and the torque is already there under the hood, but due to emissions and regulations when you buy this vehicle stock, you’re not able to tap into the true power and resources that the Tacoma holds under the hood.. I’ve spoken with several people that had the pedal commander prior to getting the tune, and they were so happy with the results that the tune provided them because it’s really fixing and re-programming the computers that are talking with each other when the truck is deciding to shift up or down. I’m going to put a link of the video below that I made regarding the OT tune and I hope you enjoy it. Let me know if you have any questions on it. I’ll be happy to help. The reason a lot of people opt for the pedal commander is because you can buy it and plug it in and then just unplug it when you don’t want to use it or not turn it.. when you have someone tune your vehicle, there’s always potentially a risk of somebody doing something wrong which is why it’s vital that your tuning is done by a certified tuner, who is licensed and doing it legitimately.. I hope this helps answer some of the questions you may have, but feel free to reply back with anything that did not make sense or I was not clear on, but essentially the pedal commander masks the problem, but doesn’t actually change the way your transmission and engine are communicating.. while the tune actually fixes and addresses the problems and gives you a very smooth and refined Tacoma. Enjoy! kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6GfpqeraLzVhsY.html

@@davehughes6798 great question, so I would recommend making sure your transmission fluid is at the correct level. Since your Tacoma is so new, I think getting a tranny fluid change would be a little overkill but that’s gonna be your decision to make. Regarding the tune and your truck passing smog… as you may notice from my videos. I am also a California dweller and I got my tune done by Q with TK421 Tuning. Here is his link. tk421tuning.com/ Not sure where you live but if it makes sense, I think making the trip to Q would be well worth it. Before you get the tune done, you have to sign a waiver, and the smog question is a part of it. Also make note that you can always have your truck returned back to stock and then back to tune once you pay the $450 it’s essentially a membership and you’re not going to get charged to have modifications done to the tune in the event you need to change something. Here’s what it says regarding the smog: Will my truck pass smog [READ CAREFULLY]? • Our test trucks have passed the new smog checks, we don't guarantee results because our tunes are not CARB (California Air Resources Board) approved, nor do they have an E.O. (Executive Order) issued by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). However we are confident that your vehicle can pass since we do not tamper with existing smog, emissions or CEL/MIL in your vehicle. • California vehicles less than 4 model years old can pay a smog abatement fee for the first 8 years the new vehicle is registered AKA you don't have to smog your truck after 8 years if you're the original owner. (www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/smog-inspections/) • Starting 19 July 2021, CARB (California Air Resources Board) has imposed new regulations in which your vehicle may or may not pass smog checks and their testing requirements, by tuning your vehicle you acknowledge and accept this responsibility as your own.

The best Automatic Transmission Fluid Additive to stop shudder, sticky valve body operation, and basically bullet proof the unit, Is Prolong Automatic Transmission Additive. It is only 8 oz and can be added to any fluid level without the risks of over filling. I've been using it for years, towing 5th wheels, and fixing issues on friends vehicles. I had a issue with my Mercedes S63 AMG, changed the fluid with Amsoil and prolong. It is like new. Mercedes fluid does not handle moisture very well. It tends to squeeze it out into the valve body making valves corrode, and stick. Prolong is pulled deep into the metal surfaces, and prevents corrosion. It is also heat activated, so no metal surfaces will get hot. Excellent for the planetaries. My secret is out

Possibly.. Honestly, I never really tried but I was getting the shudder even on flat roads so I don’t know if that would really make too much of a difference.. besides, I feel like a vehicle should not be doing this regardless, especially an automatic transmission.. if somebody is bogging down because they don’t know how to use a manual and which gear to shift into.. then that’s a completely different problem… but I’ve never driven another automatic transmission vehicle that required me to engage anything or put it into manual shift mode just because I’m driving up a slight incline either.. however, I understand your theory here👍🏼🤙🏼

2016 Tacoma changed the oil at 120k at the dealer flush. I hit 160k it’s cold temps and I start to get the shudder and figured out how to get out of it the same exact way, let off or press the gas more. Took it to the dealer did 3-4 consecutive drains. Fixed the shutter for me. I’m at 194k(I drive a lot) now the issue is i can be cruising 75-80mph and out of nowhere i get this hard jerk almost like if you’d be stepping on the gas and drop it from park to drive instantly thats how hard it feels. The whole truck just takes a big “hit”. Yesterday cruising 35-45 it started the shudder again(cold, didn’t fully let it get to temp like I normally do) get out onto a backroad/highway cruising 55-70mph for maybe 40-50 mins, nothing happens, kick up in speed going 80 and at around the 25 min mark of driving at that speed it starts to jerk hard, I let go and drop it to 70-73 and its fine again. Unlike this past time where it was doing it at that speed randomly or at the 35-45 area, after I get off the freeway, come to a stop at a stoplight and it turns green i press on the gas and instantly shudders on me like if it wanted to stall almost the same feeling/symptom. Took it to the dealer going to do the 4 drains again hopefully that helps, but like how you said, got to be strict on the 30k mark it seems like. Anybody else with high mileage experiencing this or if you haven’t maybe this’ll keep it in mind when you get to that high mileage point. Thanks for the vid.

Also, I’ve seen some guys on the Tacoma forms, recommend lubeguard platinum, shudder fixx. It’s only like $20 a bottle and a lot of people seem to have really good results… might be worth throwing a bottle of that in.. probably wouldn’t hurt anything. Let me know what happens. Best of luck to you.

Any suggestions?

No, I believe it’s just happening on automatic transmissions… essentially the torque converter is locking and unlocking, When the converter partially locks it supposedly creates the shutter.. there can be other components that create a vibration or shutter feeling… such as tires and lifts.. but this was due to the torque converter.

I bought my 22 tacoma new and now 8 months later at 25,000 miles it feels like the transmission is slipping. I have an appointment to take the truck to the dealership tomorrow and I suspect that they will find that the transmission fluid is low and just top it off and try to send me on my way. I'm sure that damage has already been done if it is low and I want it resolved rather than covered up.

If you have a similar problem, you will read all the comments below and there is a soution. First, Toyota does not confirm their ATF WS to be fully synthetic, I believe that 2 commenters below and various forum contributors (I'm on Bill the oil guy) use fully synthetic atf and it is likely far superior. This shudder problem is not unique to Toyota and I agree that it has everything to do with fuel economy rating that causes the manufacture to shift to higher gears earlier and in Toyotas situation to institute a flex lock system in lower gears (I have a 12 4runner but not sure if taco has it). I've successfully used lubegard shudderfix on my 2014 honda crv for over two years which only has a slight shudder

The method you described is missing a lot of details. You have to get the transmission to a specific temperature. There is a specific method for doing this. When it reaches the proper temp, you remove the "check" plug, let it drain, then tighten all of the plugs. You have a small window of time to drain the fluid from the "check" plug and to replace/tighten the "check" plug. "Team Oil Drop" youtube video has a good video on how to replace the transmission fluid.

My problem was & still is on my 2017 Tacoma TRD off-road 4x2 that once I am coming to a stop sounds like my driveline has a clank sound & feels that I was lightly bumped into from rear, my truck only has 42k miles on it now when I took it in at 25k miles to have it checked they said it's normal to have the sound & kick coming to a stop which is not true I had many trucks that never done this, a mech drove with me going around the blocks didn't do it just as I left the dealership started up again, what I do notice is if I come up to a sudden stop it will do it if I come up to a stop in a slow coasting speed it won't do it it's a real head scratcher with this issue.

It doesn’t matter if I have a manual or automatic transmission, but I Always change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid Every 30K miles, as well as the brakes are bled and the power steering fluid is changed. I also change the oil and filter every 5K miles with Mobile 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic. The high mileage oil has additives in it that reduce wear. With the prices of vehicles nowadays, maintenance is far cheaper than buying a new vehicle. I’m almost 60 years old and I know that my 23 Tacoma will be the last vehicle that I’ll ever need to own. We drove our last one for 28 years and it had plenty of life left in it, but we needed a double cab for our aging parents who can no longer drive.

I would definitely do the Overland Torque Tune. You may want to do a fluid change on your ATF one more time before doing so just to make sure the fill level is correct and that there aren’t any warning signs in the fluid.
