Shouldn't a 317 have the Kohler horizontally opposed twin...(hopefully the Series II)...???

OEM engines would include the KT17, KT17 series II, and the Onan P218G. The P218 was offered as a repower through Deere. In this case the B43G was fitted by a previous owner.

This could be because i own a like brand new 317 with a Kohler Magnum 18 in it , but i feel or my opinion is as far as doing heavy ground engaging work i’ll take a 317 over a 318 any day. The rear axel in them made by Dana is almost indestructible . I just feel in places where it matters it is just a tad bit heavier built than a 318 .. but like i said maybe im wrong and bias because i own one and it works year round and still looks and runs like new and i have had it for 20 years and it has never broke on me not once . Normal wear items like pto to mower belt gets replaced every 5 years or so and oils and filters on engine and trans. But in 685 hours trouble free ..

Off topic question...have a P220 that has breakerless ignition, but also has a condenser mounted...with no points to arc, why do they fit a condenser? Or is it something that a previous owner added?

There is still a coil and condenser on P-series. It is an electronic ignition, but realistically you can consider it an electric pick up ignition. Aside from the pick up replacing the points the system is the same as a points type ignition. If that makes any sense.
