I fixed all of the Kanto Gym Leaders to have better Pokemon, levels, movesets, strategies, and more! In today's video, we dive into how the Kanto Gym Leaders could be upgraded in Generation 1, specifically Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green so that more advanced players can have more of a fun time playing through the games. Stick around to see what changes I made to the Gym Leaders' Pokemon, and be sure to let me know in the comments if you have anything you would do differently!

    ‼️FIXING‼️ my mistakes lol (this is what I would do if I remade the video): - Sandstorm doesn’t raise special defence in gen 3. I would still keep on the teams though. - Sturdy doesn’t protect from a one shot in gen 3 (that’s just a mistake so good thing we didn’t talk about abilities much) so just ignore that :) - Brock should have rock tomb instead of rock slide on his Pokémon - Misty’s horsea should have hidden power ice since the rain is up - Surge should have hidden power ice instead of water so that it can hit both ground and grass types - Erika’s Parasect shouldn’t know sunny day since it powers up fire types - Koga should have a tentacruel in place of one of his Pokémon (probably nidoking) to match his vibe and add diversity better - Koga’s Crobat needs to be a Golbat, but can keep the same moves - Giovanni should have a different ace such as Persian or Kangaskhan to avoid being swept by surf Be sure to tell me if I missed anything! Thank you so much for watching and IF YOU HAVEN’T SUBSCRIBED then please consider it? 😁

    You should change Blaine's Ninetales. Iron Tail on it makes no sense given it's not a physical attacker. Basically, it allows water types to stand there for free since they'll resist both damaging moves it has. Replace Iron Tail with Solar Beam to further take advantage of the Sun as well as taking advantage of most if not all Gen 1 Rock types subpar special bulk. Another suggestion I have is putting Weezing back as Koga's ace. Give Weezing better coverage like Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball to deal with Psychic types. I know Gengar fits the ninja vibe but I have a better idea for Gengar. Sabrina has a Haunter in the anime. Gengar can be a very effective swerve to the player. Shadow Ball, Ice Punch, Thunderbolt and Psychic so that she can deal as much damage to the player as possible before going down. If you really want to be cheeky, you can also replace one of the moves with Destiny Bond so it can take the player's Pokémon down with her.

    @ollytropics1735 true, but players who don't pick Bulbasaur will struggle. Squirtle wouldn't match up well against Omanyte. There aren't enough encounters at this point to allow for such a diverse team at the first gym. The other issue is that he's given them moves with 60 base power while your starters are running moves like water gun and scratch. It's a little too unfair.

    Brock having three mid to late game Pokemon at the level they're at with those movesets is insanely overpowered imo, you're fighting level 6-8 wild pokemon at that stage of the game with a very small handful of level 8-9 trainers you can't rebattle. Misty having a Gyrados, which is featured TWICE on the Elite 4 is a little strong as the second leader as well. I think you went from "you need to plan your moves" challenging to "you need to grind or outlevel this fight" and Soulsbourne levels of cruel.

    @Linkforlife1998 ай бұрын

    Koga looks to be particularly nasty to face having a toxic staller out first, and a tanky one at that, then progressing into just pure power towards the end. Sabrina is absolutely terrifying with that set up strat, she was tough before, but now, damn, that is crazy. Sabrina will definitely be a massive threat to attempt to go through and I am sure she would wipe out teams with this new set up. (Good luck trying to do a hardcore nuzlocke versus this team haha) Giovanni is definitely a step up from his original team, not going to lie, I was expecting him to have his signature Persian maybe with the moves: Slash, Fake Out, Psyche Up, Return. - The idea behind the moveset is that with Persian's speed and the team being weakened by the other Pokemon, Persian would come it, get off it's Fake Out and be a physical threat with the high critical chance of Slash and (since we know how much it loves Giovanni in the anime), it will do big damage with a max friendship Return. It can also set itself up with Psyche Up. Erika while a signifigant step up from what she was, still has no real counter to flying types beyond Exeggutor's Ancient Power, if the player wants to bring something like Golbat against her, how about dropping Exeggutor's Leech Seed (since it has Synthesis for healing) for Psychic or Confusion for more type coverage? Overall, this was a very fun video to watch, I particularly liked how you made the tough Sabrina fight in the original even more difficult by not only giving her a more diverse team, but also bumping up her levels. That would be completely terrifying to face. Huge shoutout for making it so Surge cannot be swept with a freshly caught Dugtrio just outside Vermillion City.

    The next set of Gym leaders (if you decide to make a series out of this with every region's leaders and possibly E4s) should at least have the TM Move they specialize like Brock with Rock Tomb or Sabrina with Calm Mind something along that, other than that great video

  • @zaneaura84
    @zaneaura849 ай бұрын

    Just a fair heads up Sandstorm doesn't boost Sp. def of rocks in Gens 2 and 3. That was implemented in gen 4. Also Brock serves a very specific purpose of teaching the player not to rely on normal moves. Adding omanyte who can't be dealt with as easily for squirtle players kinda takes away from that. He's the one gym leader whos team I think was well designed.

  • @tomnorton4277

    Giving Brock an Aerodactyl may seem like overkill so early in the game but it would establish that Gym Leaders can be a proper challenge. Geodude and Onix can be obliterated by Squirtle and Bulbasaur but Aerodactyl would be a threat to anything you have at that point. Your best chance would be Pikachu.

    You definitely have some solid ideas here. I think if I were to upgrade the teams, it would be focused more around the TM moves specifically. Let's take Brock for an example. Rock Tomb is a sketchy move tbh, but the one thing it does well is speed reduction. The best way to take advantage of this is flinching. So, even though Rock Slide is a more powerful attack (in fact, it's a flinch move as well), I would prioritize having Rock Tomb on Omanyte. Rhyhorn and Omanyte can take advantage of the speed drops with Stomp and Bite respectively; Rhyhorn in particular hits pretty hard as-is. And then Rhyhorn can still set up sand and Omanyte can do water/ice coverage, while retaining this main gimmick. As for Onix, it already has a surprisingly good Speed, so this might be the one case to skip Rock Tomb. But, let's consider that Screech is a bad move as well, and Dig is an unrelated TM that's confusing for the player to deal with. I would seriously consider giving him both rock moves, and you could also replace Dig with Sand Tomb (which is much weaker, but on theme) or Sandstorm again. The way Brock wins isn't straight attacks, it's crippling speed and stealing your turns while piling on chip damage. I would even set all of his Pokemon's EVs into HP and Defense to emphasize this. (Also if you really wanted to be mean you could put Dragonbreath on Onix for the paralysis chance, but that seems like a bit much) Last thing - I think it's important to have gym trainers represent the type while leaders show how to abuse it. So the scrawny kid in Brock's gym should have, for example, Geodude and Kabuto. Actual rock types, but without Rock Tomb the player probably outspeeds them so they can only use straightforward attacks. And will probably lose due to the level gap.

    Not sure I would agree with many of these as the movesets seem more like those seen in hardcore mods for the Pokemon games. I think more interesting would be to have movesets for these added Pokemon that come natural to level up to where they are in their level, and have for example Brock gift the TM for Rock Tomb, and then that would justify Ryhorn having it in its moveset, but not so much sandstorm. Omanyte's egg move set is wild, but not so much realistic again in terms of fixing the gym leader vs making them very challenging. I will say I am missing what I consider to be some of Erika's signature Pokemon moves, like Egg Bomb Exeggutor, and Victreebell's Razor Leaf. Many of the rest are very plausible (i.e. Misty's psyduck, Lt. Surges entire team, etc). I guess maybe what I'm not a fan of is seeing movesets that rely heavily on TM learning, unless it's the gift TM for that gym, because again it seems not so much fixing the main game, but making it as challenging as a mod like Emerald Kaizo or something like those. But I'm very happy to see this video, it actually got me talking and thinking about the topic!

    I kind of dislike taking Geodude off of Brock's team. Mostly because it's neat that he could have caught his team right up the road from his gym. Other than that (very subjective) complaint, this was a really neat analysis. I like how you break down the reasoning behind your choices and give some insight on good battle design.

    If Erika has Giga Drain for all her Mons it'd be more benefical for her, thw rest of the move sets can be kept. But some coverage could help too. (HP Ice, Ground) Sure Exeggutor had Ancient Power...bit the other 3 need coverage too

    This got kind of long and I'm only on Brock so far, so I'll probably comment individually for each team. I do like the idea of replacing Geodude with Rhyhorn, and I don't think it's too extreme a change. Rhyhorn only has 5 more Attack and Speed than Geodude, 5 less Def, and the same SpDef, so I don't think the replacement is a stretch at all. They're roughly equivalent statwise, with Rhyhorn only having a significant HP advantage (Geodude 40, Rhyhorn 80). Now, instead of Geodude being oneshot, Rhyhorn might live, like, one water or grass hit maybe. Also, I was today years old when I discovered Rhyhorn can learn icebeam, thunderbolt and flamethrower. Which, don't get me wrong, would be a bad idea, but it WOULD be... like... pretty funny. If anything, given how Brock, as a boss fight, was designed to demonstrate how type effectiveness works, you could, in that same spirit, use ALL SPECIAL RHYHORN to demonstrate that super effectiveness means nothing if the mon doesn't have the stats for it, lol. This is a joke btw. Nobody do this. I do like giving Brock fossils, considering the Pewter City Museum. Omanyte has 90 SpA and a lot of coverage here, but on the other hand it is slow, and these games put Starmie in the second gym, so honestly it's probably fine lol. What do you think about Swagger on Onix instead of Bind? I tend to like it since Onix's Def is so high that the Atk boost on the target isn't usually a danger to him. Aside from its Def, the only other thing Onix has going for it at this point in the game is its speed, and I like how confusion complements the pseudo-Protect of the first turn of Dig (which only works as such if the digging mon moves first, which Onix likely will). Confusion added into the mix makes Onix less likely to be hit even on the turns where it isn't underground.

    Imo, a better move set for starmie (or less rng based by removing evasion) could be this. -HP electric/ice: a nice reference to Starmie getting thunderbolt/ice beam, while not being too busted for the level -Water Pulse: it’s Misty’s TM; it can confuse, which is thematically accurate to Starmie’s psychic type -Recover: Thematically accurate to starmie, and gives it longevity (similar to minimize, but feels more fair) -Swift: Better than tackle, and the star shaped projectiles are too good to pass up on for the starfish. My hope with this is that Starmie gets the coverage it’s known for, but tuned down to a challenging fight that punishes unbalanced teams or ones that only leveled their starters. Loved your idea with giving Brock sandstorm btw :)

    This isn’t so much as “Fixing” Kanto’s leaders as much as “Hey, how can we make these fights as frustratingly difficult as possible” without consideration to any design for difficulty progression that a game would have. The Pokémon choices are fine I guess, I even really like the idea for putting in Kabuto/Omanyte in Brock’s gym, but the movesets over compensate WAY too much. I understand that you want to make these fights more challenging but you give these mons essentially near end game movesets at the beginning of the game when the player’s best option is going to be like a base 55 stab move. How would one even go about beating Brock with Charmander besides over-levelling a Nidoran or catching a full team of them and training each of them up. The player doesn’t have access to good moves or Pokémon at the beginning of the game so the game starts at its hardest but overtime as the player gets more options, the leaders become easier and easier as the leaders movesets start out overtuned but they get increasingly more normalised over time. From Sabrina onwards I think the changes are mostly fine but this video doesn’t have the same smooth difficulty curve that Smith’s or RoryTheFiend’s videos have on fixing Jhoto. Again this isn’t fixing per se as if this was a normal Pokémon game with interesting design choices, if anything it’s creating more problems than it is fixing them. It is beatable yes, anything in Pokémon is but I don’t think the average player would have any fun playing these fights in the early game. That’s my viewpoint anyway.

    Strictly speaking, the cpus have random IVs so they'd just have a random hidden power type. And I think Brock's combination leaves something to be desired. Still all 4x weak to bulbasaur. And some of the movesets the cpu would not use well. Starters designed to setup light screen and reflect likely don't work as you could probably put out a high special defense pokemon weak to fire and have the cpu just spam fire punch. Also anything with explosion might just be a free beat if you just use protect or switch to a ghost-type, and once it's figured out the cpu always does that, a lot of these would be far easier to beat than you make it sound.

  • @VeyloYT

    If we can assume Alakazam gets the calm mind boosts passed to it, do you think it would be a good idea to try to fit Thief in there instead? It's Special in this gen, surprises enemy psychics who would resist Alakazam's stab psychic, and might be especially surprising if the player came in prepared with held items for a notoriously hard gym. I agree with giving it recover, but Alakazam is so frail and so crucial as this teams win condition that I wouldn't want it to endanger itself by boosting up instead of threatening the opponent actively. What do you think? I want to go into all these teams more in depth when I have a chance, but this one leapt out at me and I wanted to mention it before I forgot!

    Just a quick note. Probably should replace Horsea's Hidden Power Fire with Hidden Power Ice. If you're fighting under Rain Dance, its damage will be halved, while Ice will hit Grass types just as well while not being hindered by the rain. Also, the biggest issue with Erika is that by using Sunny Day you give the opponent a boost to Fire Type moves, which are her main weakness. Of course, it just so happens that her city is the one where people get the Fire Stone, so just about any fire type will hit like a sledgehammer if they know any fire move, even Ember.

    Awesome video! 🙌 Just a few things I would change. (I'm sure you addressed a lot of these so apologies if I'm repeating what you wrote/responded already) TMs won from the Gym should be used by at least the ace Pokémon of that Gym. TMs from other Gyms should not be used by prior Gyms like Starmie having Toxic, but if Giovanni uses a Nido, it could use Toxic. Brock: I like the squad you made a lot, but Geodude is iconic, have him start with it and make it a 4 Pokemon team, maybe nerf it a little down to level 11 to give some free Exp just to help out against Rhyhorn Misty: She looks like the true dragon master with Horsea and Gyarados both knowing dragon moves. I say give Horsea Aurora Beam instead of Dragonbreath, that way HP is not needed. Lt. Surge: Voltorb should have Sonicboom instead of HP. Give Jolteon Pin Missle instead of HP, goes well with the defense reduction from Voltorb's Screech. Also, Raichu should have Quick Attack or Slam instead of HP. Erika: Parasact should have Stun Spore, it is the only powder move missing, instead of Counter or Sunny Day, it will work well against fast sweepers. Exeggutor having basically two healing options is kind of redundant so drop Leech Seed, Vileplume already has it, and I would give it a Confusion instead, great coverage against Poison Pokemon that are effective against grass. Koga: Nearly perfect. Crobat/Golbat we know what you meant, it's all good! No Nidoking, Weezing is literally a ninja's smoke bomb and should be used as such, Will-o-Wisp, Destiny Bond, Selfdestruct, and Flash. Gangar swap out Psychic for Psywave. Tentacruel doesn't really fit the Koga vibe imo. Sabrina: literally perfect!!! Blaine: All good except Arcane, Flamethrower swap with Fire Blast, the Gym TM. Giovanni: Take out Sandslash for Nidoking, it's native to the areas near Viridian.

    That’s a good point, but it learns megahorn at level 43 and I didn’t want to cheat lol. Maybe I should have though, because megahorn is so good for countering the psychic types. Thanks for commenting! 😁

    If Crobat doesn't work due to not being in Kanto. Golbat still functions with the same moveset effectively enough for the level

    This would for sure be a cool idea for a “hard” mode mod. I know it’s not really that hard whej you know what you’re doing. But a nice change from the weak teams of gen 1

    I noticed you used Crobat. I liked the idea. How do you think their teams would look like if you could use gen 1 pokemon or evos only. (Scizor Kingdra Rhyperior Sylveon Kleavor) etc

    I feel like for the most part (and I should have clarified) that I wanted to use gen 1 based Pokémon that were in gen 3, so that would include Crobat, kingdra and scizor of course. In my next video where I look at the elite 4, you’ll see I do this a lot more often! Thanks for the comment 😁

    @@VeyloYT I'm actually doing my own revamped kanto guide so I'm looking at other kanto guides. What do you think about adding trainers in cerulean cave (red blue green gym leader rematches etc)

    That’s a great idea, I think you could add in rematches there or even in different spots around the entire map where the gym leaders might be, making it a cool side quest. Even getting to solve a puzzle or get an item for them or something like that would add so much depth into the post game, then your rewarded with being able to rematch them. Something like that you could add!

    You do realized that sandstorm would just be chip damage as the Special Defense boost wasn’t a thing til Gen 5. Also I very much disagree with giving Rapidash the unreliable Bounce even for coverage, though thinking Blaine wait til lvl 45 to evolve his Ponyta for Bounce is humorous, something like hidden power Fighting or Protect

    I think giving Misty, Erika, and Blaine the starter trio would actually round out their teams a bit better. There's already trainers in Kanto with some of the starter pokemon so I don't have any qualms about more starters being in the game. They could also be worked into the Elite Four to round out Lance and Agatha.

    I normally wait a while to see if I consistently enjoy a channel's content to subscribe, but you earned one from me. The video is well put together and enjoyable, and your narration is very engaging. Like someone else said, I'm actually surprised you don't have a lot of subscribers. Your logo and presentation is on par with other channels that have tens of thousands or even 100k subs or more. Keep up the good work, and I'm confident you'll get there.
