    I think I must be number 2 because I've never understood the hate, they just don't bother me in the slightest, if anything I'm almost of the opposite opinion that they look sillier bouncing off large convenient rock structures.

    I think they look okay, but I deep-strike on roof with my Inceptors so much that everytime one model falls off the roof the stem will break. I tried a hack where my boss taught me to drill a hole into the back of the model and sharpen the stem to stick it in - still breaks. So at last, I just took some brass sticks and stuck them into the base, with some rocks to pile on the base to cover up the base of the stick. Works wonders, and I actually liked the aesthetic of the metal flying stem even though it's not "transparent"

    For me, the only problem with these ones comes with larger models. For AOS Kharadron Overlord's boats the flight stands don't give to the model enough stability, so you have no choice but making "something" stronger and integrating it on the base.

    You'll find super glue will work better if you wet the pin and put it the hole in the bark chip. Do this a couple of times. Then apply super glue to the pin. As the little moisture transferred from the pin to the absorbent wood/ bark will stop the glue being soaked away too fast from the part before it sets. It's worth nothing. That it's better to add the miniature to the pin once the pin dries in the bark chip. That way you avoid super glue frosting.( it'll only happen when you've over applied water .Or Murphys law when it's an expensive miniature)

    I'm thinking that by using a little bit of foliage, tall grass etc around the foot, you could create a little more 'separation' between figure and base. I might even try positioning him, facing the cork outcrop more. It would give the impression of approaching the rocks and enhance the levitation effect. Great basing, I'd love to see them, (and the figures) painted up.

    Nice! I've been looking for an alternative to GW flying stands, but there's nothing out there. Thoug I do want to ask, what would you do with larger models with Flight Stands like New Stormdrake Guard for AoS, or Kharadron boats? Even medium sized models like Idoneth Eels? Because I don't think there's a wood-chip big enough for many of those.

    Great bases but they are no longer flying but just about to fall off their precarious perches ;) I Prefer the original flying stands even if I have to pin them to the model which is a pain. Also prefer my bases to be fairly basic so they do not take attention away the model or look out of place on different battlefields. The biggest issue is the jet packs IMHO.

    One good use I've found, is BLOOD! you can hold the flying base over a candle, and slowly pull apart for a thin plastic rod. glue this to a chainsword or something, and put a bunch of blood for the blood god on it, and there you have it! some bloody streaks! albeit slightly brittle, it can really add a lot to a model!

    Ngl, if I end up getting any models with flying stands, I'm probably just going to magnetize them if I can, that way they'd be way better to transport & if the stand actually breaks, it's an easy fix and you don't need to knife the ends off the base or the model.

  • @RinoGato
    @RinoGato2 жыл бұрын

    Interesting video. This technique can definitely work for more dynamic models, like those who look like they're just about to jump or land. However - For this particular models, In my personal opinion I don't think it's the right choice. The models themself look out of place already, like they lack any kind of dynamic whatsoever. To greenlight this design in the first place is questionable. Even on their flying stands, they just don't look right. They would definitely benefit from a more static position, with both feet on the ground or close to the ground. But this are just my two cents. You did a great job with the bases and as long as you're satisfied with how it worked out, it's all fine.

    Yeah GW flying stands have never been good, and those new ones are even worse. On my old Eldar jetbikes I used to just use the very bottom of the flight stand so they were hovering like speeder bikes in Star Wars. Only problem I ever had was someone accused me of modeling for advantage since the bikes weren’t as high up. The judge ruled in my favor since they were still modeled on flight stands and the rules didn’t specify how high they had to be. I seem to have gone a bit off subject… love the wood chip bases!

    Yes, but fiddly. Strong wire - I have some very stiff wire in my "real" toolbox. The real issue is finding a sturdy way to place it in the miniature or stand, often needs to be built up and/or drilling where a model is substantially thick. You can even put smaller models a bit off-centre, but the base needs to be weighted. I also recently acquired some bicycle spokes. They seem they could also work. Bonus, these area already black.

    i dont necessarily think the flying stands look too bad, the issue with me (particularly so with these awful curved ones) is that they simply dont hold the model up well at all. Especially with heavier models like space marines or custodes. these tips were awesome and i will definitely be employing them in my future hobby endeavours!

    Once upon a time flying stands were just bits of the tabs connecting to raised feet.

    I don't really see an issue with the new flying stands . If anything , they're a bazillion times better than the old ugly "flying stands" some older models used to have like the metal Seraphim . Just an ugly chunk of metal underneath the feet that didn't blend into the base ... I understand that in terms of sturdiness they might not be the optimal solution as their thinness means they're prone to snapping , but in terms of aestethic , they're just fine . Sometimes i really feel like people go out of their way to find issues with every single piece of item that GW produces , and there's little more to it than that .
