Fixing Food Aggressive Reactive Dog in 3 Weeks!

3 weeks of training complete with Sabre the 2 years old mixed breed (pitbull, labrador, mastiff, xxx). He is a very high strung dog and super trainable. We had to break through some of his issues such as jumping, pulling, and food aggression but he has come a very long way.

I love Garret's paid content, but I still find myself frequenting the free content here. If you watch enough of Garret's videos, you'll start to pick up on his sense of humor. He has at least two out that are funny skits of him supposedly hypnotizing dogs for certain things like recalls. So many people thought he was being serious (shaking my head). Those videos of people's dogs flying them like a kite crack me up and make me sad. After getting 'The Perfect Walk" my dog was walking halfway well on a leash after 2 training sessions. I still had a long way to go, but it's amazing what a couple of on point corrections can do. What Garret shows in his quick loose leash walking videos is what he can do in 3-5 minutes if you edit out the commentary. "The Perfect Walk" has hours of information ranging from collars to ways to train yourself to train your dog, dog psychology (really interesting stuff), and showing a few different dogs being trained on different collar types.

Awesome video. My favorite parts were those inserted clips with owners stumbling, falling and flying behind their dogs. A picture says more than 1000 words, and a video more than 1000 pictures... Anyone doubting the wisdom of using the prong with large, powerful and giant breeds - should watch those clips.

I was watching some positive only trainer just before I found Garret's channel. I was trying to figure out how to teach my new puppy now to loose leash walk, and this positive only trainer had a 'series' of videos to cover this. I watched the 2nd or 3rd video and it was 20-25 minutes long and I didn't see much progress, and there were more videos to follow. I backed out and Garret's video of his with the 4 YO German Shephard was what I watched second. 3-5 minutes of work (20 minutes with commentary) and this GS went from pulling like some of these video clips to where Garret's 5 YO daughter was walking the dog on a loose leash. I never looked at another video to train my dog. Now I see why 'positive only' trainers say the prong collar is so bad - it ruins their business, so they try to vilify the prong collar to gain business using fear tactics. The best example I think I saw was about a 60 second short video where Garret was training this Rottweiler not to run out in front of cars. Two firm corrections and the dog was no longer running out in front of cars. He just literally saved that dogs life, and people are still calling Garret cruel. That really gets under my skin because about 15 months ago (Halloween night) we were at our daughter's friend's house to go out as a group, and everybody was in the fenced in yard getting ready to go. As people were starting to head out, I opened the gate for some ladies, trying to be a gentleman, and the dog bolted out and was gone like the wind. Several adults were off quickly taking different roads, and I was off by myself looking and calling the dog, but no luck. I went back to the house after 20 minutes and the dog wasn't back, so I went another way to meet up with my wife and daughter for a few minutes, then kept looking. When I got back to the house the second time, I asked some guys out front by a car if they had found the dog yet, and they said they had, and it had been hit by a car and it was dead. I flew angry, thinking they were just making some cruel jest, but I took a step forward and the dog was in the back of the car, and it was dead. We made sure no kids were around and put the dead body in the shed, and about 2 minutes later the kids mother came home and to say she was grief stricken was an understatement. She was holding the dog and rocking, checking to see if the dog had ant life and if there was a chance to save him, but the dog was gone. I tried to apologize for my part in having the fence gate open, and the woman immediately stopped me and assured me it was not my fault. They knew the dog was prone to bolting at the gate and he had done it a TON of times, and said it was their fault for not thinking to have the dog secured inside the house. I appreciate the grace she showed me, but that doesn't stop the fact that every year, her kids (8 and 11 at the time) will always associate Halloween with the death of their dog, as well as the parents. It also means every Halloween I will remember my role in their pet being killed. So people saying Garret is cruel or inhumane for using a prong collar...I hope they understand that if this dog and many dogs that are hit by vehicles every year would still be alive with just a little prong collar training. 1 to 3 firm corrections saved that Rottweilers life, and it would save so many other dogs lives, the grief for the family, vet bills, vehicle damage and potential injuries or death of the humans in the car, depending on how they react. I used to hate prong collars too, but after watching Garret use the collar and the results obtained with very few corrections, it changed my mind. I realized I was judging a book by its cover, and after some in depth video watching and reading, I now own two prong collars.

How did you break him from food aggression? I have a 10 month old Blue tick hound/black lab mix and he is stubborn as hell and will lay down over his bowl when feeding and only has growled at me once when removing his bowl of food but i quickly corrected him with a good zap from the e collar! Now should i make him step back from the food and train him to only eat when i say and make him move back from the bowl until i tell him otherwise? The reason im asking that particular question is the way he lays over the bowl to eat! He doesnt stand to eat he always lays down!

Hand feed him for a couple of months to reassert dominance. Right now he doesnt respect your authority. Him having to eat from your hand when you say so will correct who's in charge.

Are you in Florida!!!?? I desperately need HELP and more advice. I have no idea where I went wrong. He has food aggression even though I do feed him 4 to 5 big meals a day along with making sure his water bowl is constantly full. He has tried to attack me now 3 times just by putting food into his kennel with him. He gets walks multiple times a day as well as I don't have a fenced in yard. I can not afford a trainer so before I decide to rehome him to someone that can for sure handle him. I would like some training advice. I would hate to have to make the depressing decision to rehome my fur baby. Knowing that he could possibly end up in a shelter if I do rehome him. Any advice is appreciated. 💙 Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read this post.

Wow yes. Different colors but very same bone structure. Really interesting dog. Crazy smart, high drive, but not a "working" dog but could be. I'm not familiar with Catahoulas but he's almost like a sight hound. Very visual dog. Are Catahoulas very target fixed visually? This dog was like constantly waiting for a bird to fly up out of nowhere.
