Fixing flip clock motors - How does that work?

Here we discuss how a method of oiling a flip clock motor actually works to get the motor running again. We also review how to tear down a flip clock motor - or more specifically how to break into the gear box to replace a gear.

    i’ve got a couple very fine surgical syringe needles i use to oil the motors, 1 is bent slightly and fits through the holes on the top cap, the other can be used on the gearing side, of course dismantling is the best way but this comes close

    Awesome info! It's def helped me restore my clocks with your "oiling thru the hole" technique. it's the first thing I try. Hey random question , do you know of any "spacemaker" under cabinet style mountable flip clocks? I was curious if there were any. I guess you could always mount a flip clock with no top buttons but yeah that seems sketchy for an undercabinet flip clocks solution. Just wondering if you knew of any like that. Thanks!!!!!

    Thank you for this Video - my Caslow all of a sudden startet to make iritating noises - i figured it is from the spinning motor and when I tilt the clock, the noise stops... I'm gonna try out if pushing a little will help... however, do you know why it started to make noise in the first place? I didn't move the clock the slightest and am curiouse....

  • @Flipclockfans

    Most often that means that there are stripped gears in the gear box. The only fix would be replacing the motor with one from a working clock or trying to open up the gear box and see if the gears can be replaced. It's a challenge.

    Looks very much like the motors in my grandparent's late 60's and 70's Spartus clocks that are made in the USA. One clock is a kitchen hutch and the other is a pot belly stove. I inherited my grand parent's house and remember these clocks from when I was a kid. The sad thing is both clocks stopped working with in a couple months of each other and when I opened the back of the clocks and seen the motor assembly that had rivets holding it together, I just slapped my head and geeeesh thanks Spartus minimal-us instead of Spartus maximus. So would have screwed you up to use screws huh Spartus? lol So does anywhere make replacement motors? I know they make the replacement kits that are like a little plastic square shape and quarts, but would certainly be nice having something closer to the original for the clock

    What kind of oil better use for this?

  • @Flipclockfans

    @Flipclockfans

    3 жыл бұрын

    You can use synthetic motor oil (like for your car). That actually works great. I sometimes use WD-40 or a light gun oil to clean it then follow with synthetic clock oil (like Liquid Bearings) or like I said, motor oil. Other restorers that I know use just the motor oil and let the clock run with the motor tilted motor side up to disperse the oil.

    I feel your pain. It's the one thing that I don't like about these clocks. The brass verses the plastic gear is often an area of failure. I wish I could go back in time and tell them to make that first gear out of brass.

    Copal clocks are planned obsolescence from the 60ties. Never had a motor so far where the electric part failed, always a mechanical reason. Metal wheels front and end sandwichs thinny plastic wheels, all in a sealed case. Cheaper to buy new but to repair, even back then. That's why they became almost extinct hence always exciting to spot a "stubborn" survivor which avoided scrap. Me owns a broken Caslon 201 (first wheel's teeth completely worn off, need a 3D printer as user [snthess] below suggests) and a nice working 602, which I consider as a lucky guess myself at Ebay. Flips may contain worse, a broken Sankyo motor - an utmost malicious design.
