Fixing Flat Moto Tire - Backcountry Training - Yamaha XT250

Ойын-сауық

Sooner or later I'm going to catch a flat, 100 miles deep in the desert or a nail from the street. It is inevitable. Knowing this, I'm preparing myself for the event by doing some practical training using just the tools that I carry on my motos. The only cheat I used was a lift instead of the Rolling Mavericks jack. However, I do practice with the Rolling Maverick Jack on all the bikes.
There was nothing graceful about this fix. It got done and I realized two of the tire spoons I carry absolutely suck. Oh, I also pinched a tube. This is why I practice. I also realized that even though I think the Tusk D Sport tires are awesome, they are absolutely miserable to deal with if you have to pull a tube out. I'm seriously considering switching to another tire. Overall, a positive experience and hopefully I'll be ready for when this happens in the wild!

Tire coming off ? Put 2 or 3 tire irons in before you start to lever it off. Without doing that... you can't fit another iron in when there is bead tension on the tire. (As you found out.) Other big thing... is the DROP CENTER RIM. You've got to manage the tire 'opposite' to where you are working the irons. Managing the bead back there is more important than the irons ! Both of the tire cords need to go in the middle of the drop center. Use your hands to move the beads to the middle of the rim, then apply tension with the irons. Doing that will allow you to take it off/put it on... pretty darn easy ! Without doing that... it's a big issue. Try this with a Dunlop Trailmax Mission Tire... they have the toughest bead and carcass !

I agree with your description of the Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires. I installed a set on my Super Tenere and they were an absolute mofo to deal with. Thank God they were on a tubeless rim so I wouldn't have to change a tube in the wild.

Thanks for the video and idea! This is something that I definitely need to do. I have been off-road riding for many years but I never have had to fix a tire in the wild. I carry everthing that I feel would make the job relatively easy, but I need to put it into practice, in the comfort of my driveway, just to make sure everything works out. I do all of my own tire changes, both on my dual sports and my street bikes, but I have the luxury of doing everthing in my garage on a No-Mar tire changer or just using the machines tire holder with spoons.

This is reality. Not the "just swap tires, it only takes me 10mins" guy you find online. Some safety glasses or riding goggles won't hurt, unlike a tire spoon kicked up by a sidewall lol

I feel your pain! I also spent the best part of last Saturday trying to do this exact same deal on my XT 250. Getting the valve back in and forcing the tire back on is incredibly difficult - Ended up having to lube the whole sidewall of tire to complete - Exhausted when finally done. Not sure how this would have gone down if I was in the middle of the desert with the sun beating down - especially if it was the back tire! I guess trying a few more times might make it easier but not looking forward to it :)!!

I've changed my share of bicycle tires. That looked way harder. Bravo!

You need to add 3 small tools to your tire kit that will help you tremendously. 1-a tube of petroleum jelly or lip balm, 2- a bead buddy from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC 3- a valve stem puller (it hooks onto the valve stim and it pulls right through the rim. You did a great job without these tools, but they will make life much easier on the trail.

Thanks for the video and I’ve Subscribed! :) Have you made a list/video of all the tools you carry? I’m a new XT owner and fairly inexperienced in maintenance/mechanics and it’s easy for people like me to carry the wrong tool or miss an essential one. :)
