This is one of my favourite projects of yours, along with your moped and electric minibike. There is something magical about being able to bring a car from being one wheel in the scrapyard to being almost 100% mechanically sorted for less than a thousand bucks. The idea of finding a second hand car that is legitimately 100% sorted mechanically for $1000 with fresh fluids, new bushings, ice cold air con, and tyres that are still round is laughable. But by picking up a turd filled rat chewed, peeling paint old Saturn for free fiddy you've made that happen.

The front suspension design is the definition of the MacPherson strut, that is to say the for and aft movement located through the lower arms via an anti roll bar. Pioneered by Ford UK in the 50s I think and extremely effective, economical to build and giving independent front suspension by simpler means than huge double A arms or similar. The ratchet straps took me back to my ford Sierra days but in reality it's easier to do it on the floor, start one side and use the steering to get the other side started. But you've done it now anyway haha

  • @kozmosius

I didnt think much of these cars until i rebuilt a 98 sl2 i got for free with a blown engine. Imo these cars are definitely underrated. This car had a dohc all aluminum engine, aluminum rims, 4 wheel disc brakes and fully independent rear suspension. The higher level gm cars didnt even have these features.

In my life I've never had one out of spec....but I replace the brakes before metal on metal action happens. For reference, I have repaired many flat tires on my motorcycles and rode them for thousands of miles after doing so. LOL

New to the channel; this is awesome. Just watching two dudes figure it out as they go is great. I’ve got a 2000 Saturn SL with 246K miles that I bought, used, in 2002. Great freakin’ car!!! Head gasket failed at 235K miles and did so in the most elegant way possible; just dribbled a bit of coolant out the front. I fixed that along with replacing the timing chain, oil pump, chain tensioner and motor mount. Ready for another 23 years!! My wife hates the car, no power steering, stick shift and no power windows; I love how no-nonsense it is! Good job replacing the suspension components, mine could use those too!! Also, side tip, if you ever get a weird hi-idle, it very well may be the TPS. My TPS was lying to the computer and making the computer adjust the idle air control motor. TPS takes less than 5 min to swap out. Last thing, why do RockAuto boxes always look like they’ve been dropped off a cliff!?!? 😂 Cheers boys, thanks for letting us watch you work the mechanical magic!!

I use rock auto for parts, but they irritate me with the shipping costs. Have you found like four item's, and before you go to check out, they are all coming from warehouse c, but then you go to your cart, and they have the stuff coming from 2 or 3 different places? I usually have to change parts a couple time's to get them to ship from one place, even though they have all the parts in one warehouse. You can't call anyone either, you have to e-mail them, which is annoying, because i want to call them and ask why they are trying to rip me off on shipping, or more expensive parts to get them shipped from the same warehouse. Fed ex has definitely raised their rates. I have had a couple of those old saturns, and they were good cheap transportation, and i would have fixed this one up to if i were you. G-d bless y'all.

License plate NT1TLD (entitled) Question: how do transmission shops separate lower ball joints without damage? Ans: Without a pickle Rick fork. The rest of the answer: with a big prybar and a hammer. I’ve killed an expensive ABS module doing Tyler’s piston compression technique. Now I open the bleeder first. Besides, the fluid at the caliper is the most degraded.

  • @michaeltutty1540

Great to see you getting that Saturn up to par, Jake. You and Tyler work well together. Tell Tyler that the brake trick will not work on everything. Some cars have pistons that rotate to retract. I'm wondering if that would work on the 4 piston Girling calipers in the old Volvo. If so, definitely easier than any other way. Next brake job I will find out. 4 piston front, 2 piston rear, all Girling. Not a floating caliper in sight. Almost at the end and you are talking about being able to listen to music through the car stereo via Bluetooth. I still have the 1990 Clarion noise generator Volvo called a stereo head unit in 1990. I can listen to music from my phone no problem, using a Motorola Bluetooth unit that I bought about 2005. Phone to Bluetooth. Bluetooth transmitter sends signal to car stereo. Problem solved. Now I really do need up upgrade the stereo. Just touching 33 year old Bosch wiring scares the bejesus out of me! Wish I had a Tyler to do it!!

Or are you just going to find a new bumper that is the color that you need and not worry about painting it? Since you are excited about this car I figured it might be a good question to ask. I've always been extremely curious about Saturn’s but no very little about them.

I have a question about my 2004 BMW 325i. The car goes into limp mode about a min or so after I start it, I turn it off and back on and can drive a little ways and then it goes into limp mode again. Once I make it to the interstate and get to 6th gear it runs fine no issues at all, as soon as slow down it goes right into limp mode again. I have changed the following, both vanos solenoids, the disa valve, the maf sensor, the intake pipe. I have a creater elite launch scanner tool and it's saying my battery voltage is 12.8, is it suppose to be higher then that. I get a code for the tos sensor but iam not sure it's a sensor because of how good it drives on the interstate and iam thinking it could be the battery. Please help me if you know of anything I need to check. Iam at a lose here and I don't want to just be replacing any more parts for it not to be the problem.
