About cage time, the opposite is also true. If you give them all access all the time they get bored with that, it's good to have places they can't go sometimes. I also like to pull all their toys out & pile them in middle of the room, keeps them busy for a day or 2. I tried a bunch of dig box media over the years & always had issues. I eventually found ping pong balls were awesome. They are washable, too big to chew, obviously not litter, not super expensive & for a fun occasional activity dump them out (down stairs is hilarious). I started with a box of about 200 & now they are up to around 2000 in a kiddie pool. Beer pong balls are food safe & cheaper, like 50 for $7.

l have 5...my first were a brother/sister pair, then a few months later got another and then a few months after last my last, or so l thought. Maybe 4 months later l rescued one that was a notorious biter. They live in a huge atrium and no problem with the siblings. After that each was brought into the atrium in a plastic cat carrier and left there for 5-10 minutes while they were sniffed by the locals. Then the cage door was opened and usually at least one would enter and check out the new one. Then the new one would exit and taking a look around the new huge enclosure (about 8 X 17 ft.), would start dooking and running around. No problems introducing any of the newbies, even the one that was a ferocious biter. l have never had a ferret fight...the weasel war dance, of course. It only took 2 months for the group to civilize her...she learned from the others. She is now one of my sweetest and does not bite me or others. She lived alone in the pet store cage for 10 months because she was such a biter. l wasn't planning on another, but if l didn't try, she would have been sold as a lab animal. For the first month after l got her, she slept in the middle of the ferret pile. My opinion on having them get along is to give them lots of space. None of mine have ever lived in a cage since leaving the pet store. Lots of room to roam and play or get away from your companions seems to work wonders.

Thanks for this, I had 3 ferrets but sadly two passed this year from terminal illnesses. My last ferret is sad and won’t play. I’m in Canada and since finding out about Marshall I don’t want to support them anymore. Two of my ferrets were adopted from other families and one came from a pet store. I can’t find any private breeders in Western Canada and no ferrets on Craigslist/kijiji/shelters so I think this will be my last ferret, sadly. I have gotten rid of his cage and he’s free roam now but he’s still sad so hopefully some of these tips will work.

Today I cried for an hour, I love your channel and I love ferrets, they are my favourite animal, I want on so bad, when I decided I wanted to ask my parents for when we move house and I have my own room I would like 2 ferrets, I studied for days, looking at food, cages, toys and prices and ways to adopt ferrets, I sat down my parents and told them, as soon as I said ‘I want a ferret’ they said no. I tried to reason with them but they told me off. My mum finds them disgusting and my dad said he didn’t want any other pets, although he wants bunnies. Since then I have still been researching and watching your videos having hope that I will still have a chance of getting some. I really respect what you are doing and love your channel if you have any advice on pursauding my parents I would really love that ❤️

Aw I’m sorry. Did you end up getting any? I suggest researching for longer and once you feel like you’re confident and know everything, sit them down and tell them what you know about ferrets and show that you’re mature enough to own one by telling them plans on where the ferrets would live, the cage you’re getting, where you will find the money for vet bills, total food cost per month, etc. I just got my ferret 5 days ago and I had been doing 4 years or research and for a while, my parents weren’t convinced either! The main thing you must do to convince them is to show (through your knowledge of ferrets) that this is not just some phase and you will love and care for the animal. I hope this helped :)

@@oliviad8661 Aww :( how long have you been interested and researching ferrets for? Unfortunately, ferrets would kill a bunny - so if you were going to get one, you'd really have to keep them seperate. Why do you think they're not at all interested? If it's the smell, maybe you could try and get them to meet a ferret (not a pet store one though, as they're kept in glass tanks and fed bad diets which makes them stink). Honestly, the smell isn't as bad as everyone says if you clean up after them a lot, and give them an appropriate diet.

@@reina8942 I’ve been interested for just under a year, my bunny is going to be kept outside and I would have the ferrets inside so they would be separated, they wouldn’t let me let them meet one as my dads sister (my aunt) had one when she was younger and as she didn’t look after it properly it had bad behaviour and was very dirty and had a bad smell, I also live in the uk so there are no ferrets in pet stores near me and it is hard to get them (not impossible just hard)

A single ferret can thrive on its own. Are you able to spend 6 hours a day with your ferret? Do you have other pets like a cat it could play with? Not all ferrets need to a mate. If you get a kit, more than likely they’ll get used to being alone

Alyssa Pavlik that actually is not incorrect. I had a lone ferret for 4 months and when I finally got him a mate, he wanted nothing to do with him. He tolerated his presence but wouldn’t play with him and would only occasionally sleep with him. I ended up having to get a 3rd as a playmate for the 2nd. It’s more common than you think. Not every ferret needs a partner, most do. But not every one and some prefer being solo.

What would you say about a senior ferret? I let him free roam and within 30 minutes he’s found a soft blanket to sleep and is done lol

I had 5 ferrets and they all passed as the years went on from various cancers unfortunately, now we have our old man Charlie and he seems pretty content with being alone, he’s always kinda been a loner even when we had 5. I’m trying to find some ferret parents in our area to have play dates with, he is almost totally blind in one eye and I’m almost positive he’s deaf, so I get nervous switching up his area (he has his own room full of toys and dig boxes) because his lack of vision causes him to run into things pretty often. We go for walks when the weather is nice, he enjoys it for about 15 minutes and then he’s taking a nap lol.

what would you suggest with baby ferrets ? in regards to free roam , its normal for kittens to be free roamed from day one is it the same with ferrets or is it good for a cage for a place they know is safe and has there main food / water in?

You can free roam them as kits, just make sure everything is very well ferret proofed (since they're smaller than adults they can get into smaller holes/gaps). They also should have a place where they can come back to and feel comfortable in

Ugh... where do I even begin? My ferrets used to be aloud to free roam 2,400 square feet of my 4,800 square foot house! HOWEVER, my boy ferret REFUSES to be potty trained! My girl, No problem! She would run from all the way upstairs to downstairs to use her cage litter box. Keep in mind I literally have 7 litter boxes at one point just to make sure they had ample opportunity to not have to try and hold it wherever they were at in the house AND I constantly had them clean so that no poo or pee stayed in their because my boy also won’t go in a litter box that has been used even if it’s only one pee spot AND YES my litter boxes are plenty big enough for both of my ferrets to fit in at the same time! Because of all of this the they now only have 1,000 square feet to free roam. Bummer for my girl but I sneak her upstairs every other day to still reward her when the boy is sleeping 😆 ALSO my ferrets want Absolutely Nothing to do with eggs!! Literally like my girl despises them. My boy will eat a tiny bit and then wants nothing to do with it. Seriously I have tried numerous times! ALSO they do Not want ANY TREAT except salmon oil. Not chicken, Not liver, Not bison!! Literally nothing except their food and salmon oil!! Maybe I just have the strangest ferrets in the world IDK but it sucks! I am exhausted trying to entertain them and keep them stimulated....... 😩 box play castle, done it, spent hours making it and then my boy gets pee in it in some spots and now nobody wants to use it! Cannot wash cardboard. Tunnels same thing. Can wash but is a huge 7 foot tunnel, again exhausting and hour and half to wash, rinse, dry, clean up my mess from washing! I love them with all my heart but my two year old kids seemed easier to take care of......🤯

I wouldn't worry about him, I would worry about the ferrets getting killed or injured by him as toddlers are impulsive and have extremely little self control. Ferrets are not for children. I know the ferrets won't be for him but you'll have to watch him with them constantly so he won't hurt them.

My boyfriend and I have cats and I imagine we will always have cats. We want ferrets in the future when we have a house. I planned to have a pet room for our other small animals and reptiles and we would let the ferrets out in there and maybe in the bedroom. Would switching between the two rooms be sufficient for free roam time and keeping things interesting? I just know my one cat in particular has a strong prey drive and especially if we still have her down the line I wouldn't want them to have access to each other. Do you think we could make this work or are ferrets just not right for us?

I have had cats all my life and ferrets for just the past year. Currently l have a 15 yr. old who is not the least bit interested in interacting with my 5 ferrets and a 3 yr. old that is. Before l got my dookers, l read an article about cats that said that they would only have one chance to kill a ferret....after the first attempt the ferret would go after them. My cat tries to play with them. So far l have had to rescue the cat from the ferret twice- once when the ferret was biting the cat's cheek and my cat was bunny-thumping to try and get her off and the other time when the ferret grabbed the cat by the nap of the neck, tried to drag the cat across the room and had to have her jaws pried loose. Ferrets are worthy advisories for everything that is at least 4 times their size. Don't let their size fool you. I would have a room for the ferrets only. No reptiles, they would probably end up dead. Cats can live around ferrets, but not all the time...separation makes for happier pets.

does excessive sleeping mean they’re bored also? my ferrets are out all day and only go in at night, sometimes they’re all through the night, their cage is always open so they have the option of going in or out, but they come out of their cage and sleep all day and are only active like 4 hours out of the time they’re out but sleeping the rest

I’m going to be caring for my friend’s ferret for a couple of weeks. She seems bored when I’m at her house and she’s been destroying her hammocks. She also has uncovered wire on the bottom floor. Aaaand she eats Marshall’s ferret diet, and has a water bottle. Geez it’s horrible when I write all this out. Any ideas on the best possible care I can give her in a two weeks span?

As ferrets have a real short stomach, they need to eat on a regular base of every 4 hours. Our ferrets always have the oppurtunity of getting raw food. Otherwise their sugar level could get low. Of course they are eating less during summer, we change the amounts of food then.

He's doing exactly what ferrets do. Being extremely energetic until they're exhausted or very tired. He's not staying by you maybe because you're not spending time with him to bond with him, doing things he wants to do. Ferrets need a humongous amount of time and ALL the patience from their caregivers to be joyful and thriving and bonded to their humans. One of the reasons why they're extremely hard to have and why they're not for everyone. Ferrets are not for the weak and lazy. Some ferrets have way more energy than others. I love the extremely energetic ferrets. I love all ferrets but the endless energy is my favorite. When a ferrets reaches 3 years, they start to mellow out and when they reach 4 years even more and when they're 6 they just want to cuddle and be with their humans all the time or most of the time and sleep way more then before. Staring at 6 years, ferrets are seniors. He need all the time and patience and unconditional love from you to be bonded to you to want to be with you.
