coming from an old school electronics background, i’m amazed how repair tooling/technology has evolved, especially with how you can remove & resolder a multi pin device so efficiently. i worry that that hot air gun may damage components & tracks. surprised we don’t have low temp solders these days. still same old ~350deg C MP alloy as 60 yrs ago. noted that to remove some component, you best first ADD solder & flux when logically you think you should first remove. i’m glad i don’t do this work anymore as visual acuity would be taxed. but your video close ups are quite amazing. like that your comments are kept simple & your focus is on getting the results & not on “how it works”, which has been my (long term) focus. looking at that power controller “typical use” schematic you displayed, i could not figure out the details of how it worked. but hey, who cares, is there a need to know?

This was an excellent repair video. More often than not, I try to look up the value of a device when I get it just to have an idea of what I'm working with. In some cases, the more it's worth, the higher the risk, the higher the repair cost. Or if the device has a lot of failure complaints, not to bother with it. This was a good learning experience, thank you.

I think I remember why you ordered the mosfet, but that's because I've been watching so many of your videos. You put a different mosfet in there and it was unbalanced. The middle one was doing all the work. But in general my memory is very bad. I'll go into the kitchen and forget why I wanted to be there.

Sorin you fixt it this is the one that you can repair because you have enough ohms on the gpu but you replaced one mosfet to check and you didn’t have power so you think it’s the power manager chip. So you ordered one and a mosfet. And I did trust the man from KZread watching many videos (all of them) and you fixt the expensive laptop and we also are happy you did it. So thank you for the humour. And nice fix

With my self doubt I think I know what you were going through with this repair. ;P In the same situation (with your computer) I would probably try using another machine for work and in the meantime, with the main system offline, you should be able to watch through all the relevant videos before formatting. You could use a capture card to record the videos from the likely compromised system without transferring any files. All it would require is a HDMI signal so no issues there.

Exactly. I have had looong delays waiting for parts for customers devices because of this. Also, it has had a knock-on effect on all the other courier companies because people are using them in favour of Royal Mail so all package delivery in general has been awful over December and early January.

Maybe you should start a register. For each laptop you receive you write the model number, the issue, what you found and how you solved it. If you have to wait 1 month for some part you can come back to what you wrote last time and next time you receive the same laptop or close enough with the same issue or close enough you can use that knowledge easily.

I have the same problem on a acer nitro 5. The intersil chip was faulty and i put in a new. The laptop is working only on the battery! It´s like the laptop don´t know that the charger is plugged in .. vccin bad or a other sensing line? I have put a "propperly fuse" ;-) on the first mosfet... now the laptop running from the charger, but it dosn´t know it and it is not charging the battery and tells me i can not make a Biosupdate on akku.... But it running over houres with the same battery status... I have no voltages for the intersil-chip, so i can´t check it! greetings!

the chip was only controlling the gates of a pwm pair. One was short to the ground (no charging), maybe it was also short to the gate. But why would a chip output shunt the open mosfet to heat up? I want to know too!

If you investigate the datasheet there is no technical information about this component at all (only two pages). What Sorin looked at was the external circuitry attached to the IC to make it work in this particular application; which makes its repair more impressive (admirable). The cost of the piece is $13US here in North America. Why doesn't Renesas make the information available? I think it's a topic for Discord. All the best.

I must be forgetting something? How did Sorin determined the mosfet is short and not just open? I am talking about 26:09 . Sorin finds the first small mosfet with zero ohms between the source and the drain, suspects bad, checks source to gate and finds no conductivity. Thinks it is strange. What is strange here? Is it not exactly how a good but open mosfet should behave on diode mode test? In the end this mosfet turns to be a good one. So, what was strange about it? I thought maybe he meant this is a strange situation in general, not about this particular mosfet. But he removes it first! Then he goes to the second small mosfet, tests only the source to the drain, finds zero ohms, does not even need to test the gate, and decides it is definitely bad. Removes it only after the "strange" one, which was good. It looks like Sorin is actually not being guided by his test results, but mostly by his intuition. I mean from a point of view of a newbie, he is not following the testing rules, but ends up completely right in he end anyway. This looks to me like an intuition based on experience. What an I missing here?

  • @leerzeichen1910

You‘re not missing anything, you said it „This looks to me like an intuition based on experience.“ and that’s true. If you’re on this business you don’t really take the time to check everything exactly (unless you have to) and think about laws and rules, your experience will be much faster.

Sue Diem Sorin is an INTP personality type of which have very strong intuition. His most dominant cognitive functions are introverted thinking and extroverted intuition (respectively), which makes for a very powerful problem solving pair of cognitive functions. Richard from the channel, "Learn Electronics Repair" is also an INTP personality and his methodology is very similar to Sorin's. Alex from "Northbridge fix" is an INTJ type (introverted intuition, followed by extroverted thinking) which are extremely adept at intuitive problem solving.
