Fixing a duramax losing prime

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This truck has been having issues loosing prime since the fuel filter was changed. The truck was towed back to the shop after it wouldn't restart the other day. They "fixed" it and the issues came back the next day. They called the shop this morning and they didnt want to have it towed back to fix it and they told the customer to fi s someone else to fix it and they would reimburse him for it. We went out and got it taken care of him.

That's the best form of advertising, referrals. I started another business doing remodeling and property maintenance decades ago after selling a different business and retiring. I advertised for a year and stopped because referrals gave me all the work I could handle. When you do a quality job and do it professionally, word gets out!

Great advice regarding not cheaping out on diesel engine, it's usually a $2 part failing that causes a $10k rebuild. That filter was definitely tightened with a filter wrench, smart people only ever use them to get filters off (as you said). Word of mouth is a very powerful double edged advertising tool, shops that do bad or meh work have very few customers referred to them, while shops that do good work get heaps of new business sent their way by happy repeat customers. You're definitely doing it right if you keep getting customers referred to you constantly.

I am (was) a firm believer that only DELCO filters go on my Duramax as well. Then come the class action suit that exposed Our favorite filters are made in china. I actually had a GM parts manager tell me this and I failed to believe it, however unfortunately its true. That fact the consumer pays and average 55% more for the Delco name, prompted the courts to take the case and now the class action is alive and well. The company contends their use of "Made in America" is due to the fact although they source ALL MATERIAL in China, they are assembled in the U.S. Frankly I AM SICK OF CHINA flooding this nation with JUNK!

I’m a charter motorcoach owner. May I suggest finding you a place to stay in DC in the spring of every year. Every motorcoach operator on the entire East Coast is in DC from about March-May. All of your public schools are taking their field trips then. Still not uncommon for there to be hundreds of motorcoaches on any given day there. Blown air lines/bags, coolant leaks, power steering leaks, a/c or heat inop. You name it , the coaches break and need fixing FAST. The DC area itself is a pain in the ass as far as traffic but seeing broke down motorcoaches is as common as weed at a Willie Nelson concert. If a man could stand living in Northern Va. or DC and would open a motorcoach repair shop he’d do quite well for himself. I just left a motorcoach repair shop in the suburbs of Minneapolis that literally cannot keep up. Anyone can and will work on personal vehicles which is why the money is so up & down in that market but few specialize in modern motorcoach repair and the labor rates are far higher. All that’s needed to ensure a steady clientele in to be close to a major metropolitan area, especially if it’s considered a tourist destination.

Great info. Got a question...I'm not a diesel guy but I'm trying to help out my GF's dad. He's got a 2003 LB7 Sierra, and I saw a lot of videos suggesting things like this, or rebuilding the filter head (which I've done.) When I picked up the new Delco filter it came with 2 sets of O rings (TP3018). When I took off the black, no-name filter off the truck, it had a grommet in the center of the filter, but the Delco didn't come with it. Do I need to switch it over? Thanks.

I have experienced the same issue at two different shops and both were Chevrolet DEALERS! So the AC Delco is not the fix all. Also, the hand pump/primer you used can usually be used to start the truck when it looses the prime; done it 15-20 times...worked every time. Your customer should try that each time before making a call for help. I have not used the bleed screw, just push the primer several times until you feel it become hard to depress. Good Luck

well, i've got a customers truck doing the same. replaced the filter with an ac delco, truck ran like new for 4 days and died again. this time its different though. the primer had pump will be soft at first. pump it till its hard, truck starts, dies, pump still hard. seems like there is plenty of fuel there. keep trying and it will go back to normal for about a day. this one day luck has happened twice now. im thinking the housing itself may be the issue.... any ideas

What's your thoughts on cat fuel filter conversion? I just did new injectors in my lly and truck came with a new Hastings fuel filter, I installed that before cat was ordered and figured I'd run since it's a new $30 filter but I sporadically loose prime, may do fine for 3-4 days then loose prime twice in one day.. Guess I'm swapping to the cat filter tomorrow...

I don't think that's accurate... I'm having an air incursion problem now, replaced full filter assembly (so it's most likely in the feed line), but the filter that i took off had been on there for a dog's age and the WIF sensor wires had been cut off long before. I've also read that WIF will simply give you a warning, throw a code, but not interfere with running. Not a diesel tech, just passing along what i think i know.... 🤷

You didn't diagnose anything, just threw parts at the problem hoping it would fix it. You don't explain how a fuel filter can cause the fuel system to "lose prime". Losing prime actually means air is getting sucked into the supply side of the fuel system. To diagnose this, you force pressure into the supply side of the fuel system to see where fuel leaks out. If fuel leaks out of that area under pressure, it will suck air into the supply side under vacuum. What's not shown in this video is if the problem came back.

One thing about diesels which I’m sure you and your dad know, but others who are not familiar with them would know, is that unlike a petrol (gasoline) engine, diesels DO NOT TOLERATE air in the fuel at all. A small air bubble in the suction line is enough to stop the engine, and cause it not to start again. So I guess what you are showing in this video is over tightening a filter could cause it to distort, and allow air in...
