    The way an electric clutch or the technical term an electromagnetic power take off or an electromagnetic clutch, the way it works is, When you pull the knob or flip the switch to engage the blades, 12 volts DC is sent to the clutch, there are two parts to the clutch, the rotor which rotates on the crankshaft at all time and the clutch plates which is the magnetic part, when 12v dc is sent to the clutch, the clutch plates seize onto the rotor which inturn transfers power from the engine to the blades, a clutch takes ALOT of amps to get it going, or starting current, and a 30 amp fuse is necessary, anything lower than a 20amp will blow because the current needed to start a clutch is immense, and for battery amperage, a 230CCA battery is recommended for electric clutch riding mowers, and here's another fun fact, the alternator on the engine has to be sized right to replenish the battery as the clutch draws power and alot of power, a 9 amp alternator is usually what engines come equipped with and the big v-twin's usually have a 16 amp alternator, if the battery were to drop below a certain voltage the electric clutch will stop and the engine will continue to run and the clutch won't work until the battery is at 12 volts, And the springs on the clutch are to hold tension on the clutch plates , if you get them too tight you can cause the clutch to bind up or overwork it's self and the magnets will then fry and you'll need a new clutch, which they are not cheap.

    Just because the switch will stop the motor from turning on does not mean the switch is good. Checking for 12volts to the clutch should be done first. Mine does not get 12 volts with engine on, in seat, and foot on brake. And I think it might be a bad switch or a relay.

    PTO question : The new Cub Cadets I'm seeing all have the manual lever PTO instead of the push button. What's the advantage / disadvantage of electronic vs manual. thanks !

  • @DansVlog

    @DansVlog

    4 жыл бұрын

    Are you saying it’s like old-school? To engage the blade you move the lever and it tightens a belt and a blade starts to spin? The advantage of that over electronics is obvious, but is there an advantage to the PTO being a button over the lever?? Not in my opinion. Same with when I debuted my new walk behind lawnmower. People freaked out that it did not have electronic ignition and I had to pull a cord… I wouldn’t have it any other way!!

  • @jimdep6542

    @jimdep6542

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@DansVlog Thanks for responding. For me, an older guy who doesn't have great mobility, there is a convenience of having the PTO as a button on dash, right there in front of you instead of having to twist to mess with a lever to engage the mower while driving. Twisting isn't real easy for me. What I'm wondering is if the electronic button is higher risk for failing / needing servicing. The reason why manual is better than electronic in this case isn't obvious to me, however If Cub Cadet is going back to the old school method for PTO's, maybe they have too many complaints about the electronic PTO going bad......I don't know. Someone who services tractors who isn't pushing any particular brand could give me a straight answer whether or not to avoid the electronic PTO's. I appreciate your time and videos.

  • @DansVlog

    pam Guglielmone The best way to do it would be with an air or an electric impact wrench that will hit the bolt hard and break the torque on it before the engine has a chance to move. Another way to do it would be to put your socket and wrench on it and hit the handle of your ratchet with a hammer a few good times so it breaks to torque before it can spin the motor

    drill out the end of the crack with a small drill, then fill the small hole with weld. That will stop the crack from spreading

    I don't think that is true. I know before MTD took them over, Cubs were only Cubs. After MTD bought them, perhaps they were compatible with those, but in all of my years owning and working on various International Harvesters, Cub Cadets, I have never heard that. My latest model is a 1984 which I believe was the first model under MTD ownership and nothing is compatible with other companies at least to that point in time. I wouldn't buy a newer Cub than that anyway, so my knowledge of Cubs ends at that point in time. Perhaps later on , MTD made stuff for other companies.

    Okay, a few things... On the video you posted the other day where you were loading up the bikes, I noticed that both your boys are looking taller and more handsome than the last time we saw them. Am I right? Second, at the end of this video I'm seeing your backyard. Have you removed some of the things you had there? Maybe they're all off to the side. It does look "cleaner" now. And finally, seriously, not only are you wearing shorts and a t-shirt but your lounging around on concrete! Uh, it's MARCH 11! No one will be without a COAT until late April here in Seattle. You lucky dog.
