After a total mechanical tear down, maintenance and restoration, my tape deck is now much more silent. The capstan motor can still be heard slightly in the room, but I managed to really quiet it down. I made my own replacement Idler Tire from some rubber and the play back noise is practically gone! The deck feels and sounds really solid mechanically now. 37 year old Japanese deck. Happy.
