Fix your manual transmission at home - Toyota C59 - Part 2 - Disassemble transmission

If these videos saved you a trip to the mechanics consider buying me lunch! www.paypal.me/holbrookphoto/5usd
This video series is a project log of me fixing my vehicle instead of taking it to a mechanic. I'd never done anything more than regular vehicle maintenance so this was very overwhelming to start. My confidence grew and I feel much more comfortable attempting bigger projects on my own after doing this. I do make some mistakes along the way and I don't hide anything during this project log. I was quoted over $3000 for the job but did it myself for just the cost of a few parts and my time. I did the whole project without too many "fancy tools" other than my when my neighbor helped me remove one part with a puller and his impact gun.
Leave the comment section for questions and comments related to the project. I'm happy to answer questions but I'll ignore trolls, BS, or overall useless comments. I spent a lot of time documenting and creating this video and my only goal is to help someone else with their project.

Nice video and reminded me of rebuilding by C60. Bearing failure was crazy! Toyota boxes usually very reliable. You scared me with the pry-bar on the case mating surfaces. Now need extra RTV. I used Toyota black, but when I took to dealer, the lead mechanic informed me I should have used gray for the gearbox/transmission. So-far so-good, but I do trust the Toyota guy and originally thought black replaced grey... I had the black from total engine rebuild on 2zz-ge. Cheers! P

Good to see pepple taking on these jobs at home, some tips. When taping casings apart try not to use a screwdriver and tap where the bolt holes are that is the weakest point of the casting. You could have taken the bearing off the shaft without the gear would have been a lot easier. When undoing things push down on them so you are pushing your breaker bar and the gearbox into the bench,by pulling on it and lifting it you have to apply equal force just to hold it down before you even start to undo the fastener. Good on you for tackling this repair. You should also keep bearings in same orientation, fifth gear half cage rollers all bearings bed in and if you want them to last put them back the same. I allways replace all bearings as they are the same age and milage as the failed one. Lot of work to do it again if keeping the vehicle. Replace only damaged one if on tight buget or selling vehicle or own a car yard.

This was a budget project that ended up going over the cost I wanted but that was a live and learn lesson. Taking the gear off with the bearing was just because I had seen that done in 2 other tutorials and it wasn't that bad once we got setup. Either way I'm thrilled to be back on the road and could do this again a lot quicker on my own vehicle or someone elses😀 thanks for watching. I hope this video and comments section becomes a place that helps others

Looking back, would you recommend this to someone who knows very little about cars but is looking to gain more knowledge? I have already replaced my transmission TWICE now and just had my second one crap out after only 4 months of use. I want to try and take mine apart i have a garage to use and tools but very little knowledge. I really love this car, i have put a ton of work into restoring the body and getting everything all road legal only to have this issue keep coming up. do i just bite the bullet and replace the tranny for a third time and maybe replace the seals or do i go through the effort of trying to rebuild the one thats broken. Ugh so frustrating and i thought toyota was a good reliable car.

If it's already broke you cant make it too much worse! I did have to buy few tools like the pullers and bearing separater seen in the series but it did save me a ton of money and it only cost me my time and the replacement parts. Go slow and document your work with photos and notes so you remember how to put it back together. I rushed some steps and broke parts that required buying replacements. Things that would make this easier would be an air impact gun but I did "almost everything" using hand tools

Also.. since this unit is known to have this bearing issue.. what do you think about taking the original bearing and sending it to a commercial bearing supply specialist shop and tell them you want the absolutely positively best strongest bearings to replace these with..I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to get them.. that might be the way to go.

Why are the gears locked when you try to spin them? Shouldnt they spin somewhat freely since theres is nothing holding on to the input shaft/diff?

Are you referring to when it was still assembled or after I removed everything?

Or are you meaning when i force 2 gears at once by pushing the 2 of shift rods into place?

When it was still assembled. Shouldnt it spin freely, even when in gear? Theres no resistance on either shaft or diff....maybe im confused.
