Fix Your Boring Flat Drawings with Depth Tricks
Learn comic drawing techniques focused on line weight and shadow placement in this lesson, which emphasizes the use of line weight and shadow to bring illustrations to life. Watch as @DavidFinchartist explains a simple, effective design pattern for a comic panel. Dark lighting outlines the figures, opening up in the middle to draw focus. Foreground elements frame the panel. Line weights and shadows add depth, with thicker lines for closer elements and thinner lines pushing elements back. Compositional shadows frame the main figures, while the dark foreground and light background details maintain focus. Minimal rendering with shadowing and detail creates depth and dimension while keeping the basic composition.

Finch is so mastered at character illustration it's easy to forget he's equally skilled with composition. That frame is absolutely full of clutter and still every element serves the visual flow perfectly. Awesome to watch
David Finch is a master in comic arts and so generous in sharing the tips and tricks of his craft ❤️
david finch's line quality is insane
My favorite artist doing a tutorial video, on a channel thats been helping me solidify my fundamentals and push my art to the next level. I've never clicked on a video faster.

@@ProkoTV Would love to see you do a drawing livestream with David Finch again! c:
This is gonna be a bit off topic. But watching few videos on this channel i discovered kinda cool way of learning when you can see reference on screen and then the artist disects it. It is good to draw from the reference and then draw ffrom reference to the side, but follow the artist. This way you can see your mistakes super well and can improve a lot. I kinda use this method to improve my gesture drawing abilities and i have literally seen improvement in the matter of few days.

To anyone. Improvement does not mean i am already perfect oh no no. But it already was visible enough to give that boost of "woah i am going to make it"
Great video david, watched it three times already and shown it to my kids.

Great to see the master doing a panel and teaching us all the little compositional tips and tricks! Thanks Dave!
he did that very well. he used perspective and objects size and line weight and shadows and light to make that image.
David's eye for layout, rendering and shadows is absolutely amazing!
David is very good at explaining.thanks 🎉 great video,
This is a great tutorial! I will use these methods for a story I'm gonna make.

If you share that story online, give us a tag! We'd love to see it.
Controlling the composition with lights and shading is a nice method. Personally I use dynamic lines, thin amd thick, medium and other sometimes 3 line types with one stroke to make the background lighter and front darker or lower parts of the page darker and upper part lighter, it looks intresting together with shading.
The line weight process is genius! Great advice
Thank you David for sharing your drawing tips. You're the best!😊❤
Wow ! I'm so impressed ! 🤩 This composition is really good. Thank you for sharing some of your skills

David finch is one of my favorite comic book artists. Proko could you maybe get a storyboard artist in there eventually? I want to become a storyboard or comic book artist when I grow up!

We've had a few story board artists on the channel: Rembert Montald, David Colman and more. Rembert storyboards for games and David works in film like storyboarding the recent film Rendield. They just usually end up talking about composition, ideation or other topics because a comprehensive class on storyboarding is a little more job specific than our videos normally are. Our lessons on comic composition from David and our Marvel course here on KZread will be applicable to that, though! Here's Rembert breaking down a scene as a storyboard artist: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qnV6tpqEg8nAo7w.htmlsi=1hYYvTK59HmDPjDg

Algo que não entendo é o fato de ele usar grafite 2h nos seus desenhos e o traço fica escuro como se fosse um grafite 2b, já que o grafite 2h a pigmentação é clara.
@ProkoTV
Ай бұрын
How does his graphite looks so smooth, it's like the same shade and smooth as butter it feels like in the big areas, is it the paper, the graphite or just his control? or maybe a combination of all?
@ProkoTV
Ай бұрын
Like you'd said, a combination of them all. For what it's worth, he uses 2mm Staedtler 2H leads with a Staedtler Mars 780 2mm drop clutch.
@patrickbosworth1010
Ай бұрын
Combination of all, but mostly his control! David uses a very hard lead, Staedtler 2H, on Strathmore 200 series smooth Bristol paper which will give you a nice smooth surface to shade. His 30 years in the industry has a little something to do with it too! :D
