Fix Shopify Migration SEO Problems with URL Redirects

One of the biggest issues when moving from one ecommerce platform to the next, or migrating from something like WooCommerce to Shopify, is making sure that SEO doesn't tank.
While most people assume that Shopify is the issue, more often than not this is because the URL structure has changed for indexed links and others. When this happens, your customers and Google are getting 404 errors for pages that they think no longer exist.
The best way to fix this problem? URL redirects.
Shopify makes it easy to implement 301 redirects within the admin so you can resolve issues with both customers and Google Search Console complaining about not being able to find URLs.
In this example, we'll review how to update both in the admin directly and also through CSV exports/imports.

The way the redirects work is that the page you're redirecting away from needs to 404. So if you're deprecating those, you can either simply remove or if your sunsetting the redirected URL you can pull it down and redirect traffic back to the original URL. However, at least for the purpose of this video those legacy URLs where you migrated to Shopify really shouldn't be part of your URL structure anymore likely (unless you mimicked Shopify's URL syntax from the start on another platform). Removing the redirects via CSV (so export the list, delete and then reimport the redirects in a fresh list) or manually by deleting them in the admin will stop the redirect behavior - but any previous SEO will have been attributed as a 301 redirect (meaning permanent) so Google/search engines will likely have attributed the original/legacy SEO to the newly redirected link. So you will want to make sure you're treating that on a case-by-case basis if it needs to be properly redirected after the fact to make sure you don't lose that SEO.
