Fix Garage Door That Won't Close on Sunny Days (Broken Sensor / Flashing Light)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If your garage door randomly doesn't close and the light blinks, you may have a failing sensor.

My garage door would usually work, but sometimes it would start closing, only to open back up and the door opener light flashed 10 times. It didn't happen every time, sometimes in winter, sometimes in summer, sometimes hot, sometimes cold. But, it was always on sunny days. After looking at the code (10 flashing lights) in the manual, I still didn't know what the problem was. Finally, I tried replacing the sensor since the sunny weather seemed to be the only consistent thing. It worked and the door now closes every time. My guess is that the sensor had lost some of it's strength, and the sunny day somehow overpowered the sensor strength. That's only a guess, but it worked for me to replace the door.

Funny that you tried the same MacGyver quick fix as me, by jerry-rigging some toilet paper tubes. While the issue definitely has a sunny day, time window, and angle of incidence, component to it, it looks like the real issue is old sensors becoming more sensitive to the infrared wavelengths in sunlight. So, maybe instead of running out to buy new sensors, it might be a money saver to first try and simply swap positions, so the sending unit is on the side that receives more sun.

Thanks for posting! Helped a lot. I also want to mention this is possibly needed on north facing garage doors as well (as in my case). I had to physically bend one of the eye brackets as the plastic shield caused enough of an angle distortion to break the beam alignment.

Sender = AMBER (always on, always sending), Receiver = GREEN (turns off when signal isn't received). Other than that nice video. Buried in the replies: Receiver needs to be in shade so sunlight doesn't interfere with getting signal.

Yeah it wasn't making sense the way he was describing it. Makes more sense that green is the receiver since blocking the beam would be what triggers the light from turning on and off. The sender would not know if the beam was being blocked.

I have the same problem on sunny days, between the hours of 10 and 11 am. I'm going to try a safety shield like you briefly mentioned before swapping out the sensors, but it's good to know what the next step is if the shields don't work. Thank you!

The module with the green LED is the receiver. Your presentation (03:27 and in other places) calls it the sender. The sender blindly sends an infrared beam to the receiver. Since the green LED blinks when the infrared beam is interrupted, it is the receiver. Notice how the yellow light never blinks. The yellow LED, when illuminated, tells you it believes it is functioning normally (sending the infrared beam). The yellow LED never blinks, even when the beam is interrupted. I had the sunlight problem you highlight. It became a problem when, after 20 years of living here, I cut down a tree that had shaded my garage-door-opener sensors. I corrected it by moving the green LED module to the south side (shady side) of my garage. Newer modules may have a polarizing lens that allows the system to work whether the green LED module is located on the sunny or shady side of the garage.

Also don't over tighten the wing nut. The plastic pouch on the side of the sensors that holds the bolt can crack right off. Mine had started to crack and so the sensor was loose and rattled around when the door started to close making it stop.

You seem to know alot about these garage door systems. See if you can figure this one out; wall push button light is flashing continuously and will not operate the door. Except if I somehow mess around with the "lock"button, in which case it MAY open but then starts closing before it's up all the way. Remotes work. Keypad won't work. Sensor lights are on and are working properly. I can play around with all the buttons and get it to open and then I just stand there and watch it go partially up and then partially down and then partially up then partially down... all by itself! The light on the motor does not blink.

I had a similar problem where the last two days were very sunny and warm (new garage door opener was installed in February this year). Sensor LEDs were fine, perfectly aligned. But what I found was somehow the bottom bit of my garage door was setting off the sensor.. like a piece of metal that was sticking out and for some reason wasn't sticking out before. I have a feeling it had something to do with the heat warping everything -- the sensor bracket, and the garage door itself, causing it to break the sensor communication. I ended up flipping the sensors so that the wingnut was on the inside of the bracket, that way the sensor was farther away from the door coming down. That seemed to do the trick.

Here's my tip from this: Installed these, and they didn't work. Had to rewire the old ones back on. So my tip is, leave some length to the wire on the old ones when you cut them off, in case you have put them back on.

Sounds like the sunlight is still confusing the sensor, check if it works at night but not during the day. Try attaching a polarized lens from sunglasses or camera over the eye with tape and see if that works.

We've had almost this exact same problem - with one exception. During the day when one of us leaves the house and use our car's remote to close the garage door during the day, 50% of the time it will only close 10 to 80% of the way, then retract back to open. Sometimes pressing and holding the remotes button solves the problem an that d the door closes. The times it will not close from the car's remote (this happens on both our car remotes). THEN we walk back into the house, press and HOLD the wired button we have on our garage wall and it ALWAYS closes (press and releasing the button, will create the same effect as the car's remotes). So my question is if it is a sensor/sunlight issue, why will it close when we use the wired button on the wall, the sun is still shining on the sensors?

  • @twhicke

Because when you hold down the wired button in your garage door, it overrides the safety sensors.

@@islamicwaylive Hmm :-) If I recall correctly it got worse was making a lot of noise then stopped working all together. From my research it seemed that the part that needed to replace was the Screw Drive Coupler. Since our unit was so old we decided to just spring for a new assembly. We purchased a new one from home depot and found a local Garage door company who would charge between $200-$250 to install it. Or if they could repair our current one it would be $75 for a service call + the cost of the parts. We lucked out and the guy who cam out was honest and suggested that the older units were far superior to the newer Liftmaster products. He had the part on his truck and if I recall correctly the cost of was not much more than what I could buy it for on Amazon. I believe I could have made the repair myself, but since I already had to pay for the service call, it was well worth it for him to do it "while I asked tons of questions :-)" Good luck!!
