I still miss the old style duct tape that was everywhere before they got cheap and went to plastic. It was fabric like athletic tape, but it had those big, stringy fibers too, like strapping tape, but easier to tear. That stuff was cheap and super useful, and actually worked on ducts. Gorilla Tape is a way better adhesive, but it isn't super cheap, either.

Did that to the my cheapo Arcturus. Works great. And T Rex tape is even tougher than Gorilla Tape.

You can also make the grommet lips much wider using large washers.

How do you do that? Does it involve removing the original grommets first? If so, would adding duct tape before you install new grommets make sense?

@@yellowdog762jb I flatten the original grommet as long as it’s not to fucked up, then you could add some strong gorilla tape then add the washers. It’s really up to you. Trail and error. Also reinforcing the problem area with layers of rubberized material 🪡 needle and thread it. It’s kinda limitless.

Yup. My newest tarp had the grommets rip out on day one. Now, 8 months later, the small stones that I wrapped ino the corners are still doing the trick. It looks a bit messy, but they hold really well.

G’day, Dan. That’s the ONLY way to handle a tarp,with grommets. I have several tarps from Cooke Custom Sewing because they have sewn in loops all around the perimeters, and across the centerlines. I stopped counting at 25 different configurations they can be rigged for. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I already use gorilla tape and elastic in the guy lines. The one trick I use that you didn't mention is to spread the load across multiple grommets. I tie a cord to one grommet, run it through second, then tie it off to the third, leaving the cord loose so it forms two loops between the grommets. Then I pull the two loops together and clip a carabiner or chain quick link around both, then run the guy line from the quick link. The strain from the guy line is spread, then, across three grommets.

Sounds very similar to the process we use in Boy Scouts called the "Flying Tarp". Run the cord over-under the grommets on either side of the tarp and then attach to trees with an adjustable tension knot. This allows for the tarp to "fly/float" in high winds. The back and front of the tarp, with an underlying rope attached aforehand to the anchor trees were re-inforced in the method you described and the lines attached higher up to these same trees. Good video, Dad. The comments are also interesting and provide valuable information. 🍁

You had me goin Dan. I really thought you were going to tie up the four corners and jump into the tarp at the end. Lol I really liked videos that pay homage to the old cheap blue tarp no matter how much nice gear we all have we all started with one of those.

Thank you very much. I will do this with the tape. I use a cheap 3v3 tarp, it's great, but I know it will wear out soon. Or I would, maybe with this it will last a long time. I use my poncho for the floor and it was already damaging the eyelet, I will reinforce it too. I will use the tape I have, which is the normal silver one. It should work well, I was waiting for it to wear out so I could sew it and then glue it over the seam, but I will do it this way because it is easier and faster.

Great tip for me to use on my three tarps which I have temporarily over my firewood stacks.

If you put a long stretch off tape from corner to corner (creating an X) that'll help prevent the tarp from ripping giving you more life out off it and with the tarps that have the reflective side like the one in the video you can do the same using some aluminium foil tape to further reinforce the tarp whilst still keeping the full reflective properties. If you really wanted to go overboard you can not only do the "X" from corner to corner but you could also add a little extra making a "+" over the top to really insure the tarp won't rip on you. If you're on a budget but want a "survival tarp" you can use these same tips to reinforce one off those reflective thermal blankets paramedics use to insulate patients.....still won't be as strong as a proper tarp but it'll be a lot stronger than a normal space blanket!

they make "permanent" gorilla tape that is waterproof, which would be much better than the regular stuff for this application, especially if the tarp is staying outside for long periods of time.

I used to use to tarp clamps years ago. That definitely got to be a pain but, never had a tarp rip on me in highlands and pouring rain.

A grommet is just a hole waiting to become a rip. Another thing that puts less "tearing" stress on a grommet hole are those bungee loops with a plastic ball on the end. You could make your own with a monkey's fist or a large stopper knot (a Franciscan knot on a doubled up elastic cord). The even stress of a ball trying to pull through the grommet whole is a lot less likely to tear the fabric than the sideways stress at a single point of a loop of paracord.

Might try T-Rex tape. Dollar stores are where I have found it. Hard to un-roll good sign 👍🏼

I used to use big elastic hair ties (stolen from my wife) and the clear embossed drop cloths for painting. I just use small stones, clumps of leaves to make a 'ball' so the tie downs for the middle sections had something to bite onto. I'd use sheet bend knots on the corners though. Easy peasy.

In windy weather tent camping I used to use ranger bands between the tent guy lines and the stakes, sure the wind got through sometimes but the sleetsheet remained covering the inner tent.

You can add extra grommets to spread the tension. If you do, do t just punch a hole. Use an awl or a spike to make a hole by pushing between the threads. That way you’re not cutting and thereby weakening the fabric.

Great idea............. may I sugguest that u put a small stone and wrap the tarp corner around the stone then paracord around the tarp holding the stone......very secure and last long time gi. hhehehhe

Good thoughts. I myself like to use the electricians duct tape..a bit more expensive but it's stays in place for the duration I never had a problem with it. I get mine at the big orange store.

I like the mods but if you have the time it would be better to buy some webbing and sew a loop on each corner and the mid points. Still cheap, doesn't take long and will make the tarp much more versatile

I use tarp buddy. It's a nice piece of equipment if you really want to save a tarp.

I prefer the sheet bend method but you do lose some material on the corner from tying it in.

I've seen people run a perimeter rope through the grommets and then tie off to the rope, the idea being that the perimeter rope will disburse the force to all the grommets?

I like TRex tape more than Gorilla tape. Ive used both together on tarps and plastic sheeting and left it outside till the tarps and plastic sheeting were no good. The T Rex worked best. I even got the waterproof gorilla tape which is supposed to be better for such things and the T Rex still outperformed it. Maybe in some conditions Gorrilla Tape is better. I live in the Mo Ozarks and get some pretty harsh weather cold, hot, wind and ice which is hard on any kind of tape. Your tarps will for sure last a lot longer with taped eyes. Normally until the tarp itself rotts.

what size elastic would anyone recommend 1/8 inch or bigger

If you have to buy a cheap tarp, try your best to avoid the blue ones. What color do mosquitoes love the most? If you guessed blue, you're right. Not sure why so many pieces of camping gear come in blue.

would it help if they put tape or other reinforcement under the grommet, knowing the grommet is going to cut the fibers? could probably test a used tarp. tear out of stock grommet. tearout of gromment with tape layed over. tearout of grommet that was placed in a new location on teh tarp after tape was pre-applied.

What about T-Rex tape? It's stronger than Gorilla tape from my experience with both Gorilla tape and T-Rex tape

I’m sorry sir but Gorilla tape is not duct tape. They are worlds apart. Yes duct, not duck tape, because that’s what it was originally designed for until everyone found out that you could fix anything with it. Gorilla tape is going to outlast that poly.

Hi thanks for the vid. I would like to turn u on to 2 ideas. 1st have u ever used "REX" tape? Try it u will not use gorilla anymore 2nd doing the edge is great but if u use just a little more tape it will last 2 times longer. Tape the tarp where the hole for the gromit goes on both sides make ur hole then apply ur gromit. Bonus tip if u have "CA"glue a little on the tape goes a long way.
