Five Worst Baseball Card Products EVER

Ойын-сауық

There are many reasons why collectors love certain baseball card products. There are equally as many reasons why collectors absolutely detest certain baseball card products. At the end of the day, though, what's good and what's not usually boils down to opinion. We recently trolled and polled the internet asking for YOUR opinions. Here's what YOU chose as the Five Worst Baseball Card Products EVER.

    Agree with the list. But you simply can’t disparage Fleer Pro Vision. 91 Fleer was terrible. But Pro Vision was born out of that set and remains one of my favorite subsets of all time!

    I liked the design of 1991 Fleer. The yellow card border stood out and looked very unique and looked better than other 1991 baseball card sets released in the same year (except 1991 Leaf). Unfortunately, 1991 didn't bring any great valuable rookie cards. The worst 1998 card design had to be 1991 Donruss series 1 and 2.

    1991 Donruss was and is the worst. It was an ugly two part set that came first in series 1 blue and then series 2 green cards with a combined set of about 800 cards that were all overproduced garbage. You had to open endless packs just to make a set from both series that had no good rookies. Luis Gonzalez who was the most expensive card in the set which even at the time was worth about 50 cents which was the price of a single pack at the time. The fact that the Donruss Elite series started this year made it worse because you had to open endless junk to try to get one of those super rare elite cards that made it the closest thing to gambling in the card collecting industry, since all the base cards were practically throw aways.

  • @baphomet420

    @baphomet420

    series 1 was alright diamond kings save series 1 base set, series 2 was just ugly, and no elite series, plus add the fact that dealers were scanning the series 1 boxes then packs with metal detectors you literally had zero chance of getting one thats was already like 1:720 odds. somehow the card shop in my town of 70,000 had a complete set of elite series within a month of them coming out. hmmm...

    I agree with 91 being the worst. As a stupid kid who thought 1988 Donruss and Topps would be worth money one day I thought this set was crap. After those great Luis Gonzalez and Jeff Conine rookies (both of them didnt do anything until 4 or more years later, probably peaking at 50 cents) you have the immortal Ray Lankford and Bernard Gilkey I guess? Most kids didnt have the money or parents to pull off breaking 100 boxes for one of the good inserts

    The very first box I bought of '91 Donruss - the very first PACK I pulled out of that box - had a Barry Bonds Elite Series card, numbered to 10,000. So naturally I bought tons of more boxes to no avail. I'd heard later that the odds were something like one Elite per case, but I'm not sure. Should've quit while I was ahead.....

    Also.. nominate this for Hockey: 15/16 Upper Deck Contours.. for a die cut set, I love die cuts, it was pretty bland.. also keep in mind, upper deck was trying to copy crown royale here with 4 packs per box and a hit per pack.. contours was just horrid with a price of 200-250 while crown was usually sold 80-125.. now you can find contours for 50 or less (it's also your cheapest shot at a Connor McDavid rookie auto)..

    Between print run and steroids what a waste of a nice set. The rookie card of the all time home run leader can be had for $1 easily and a guy with over 350 career wins is $1.50 in the traded set. Well, there are obviously terrible years for rookies but these are the worst products from every brand in my opinion when you factor both rookie class, set quality, design and production run. Also, I'm going to give my hockey .02 cents as well, I'd do football and basketball too but I'm not too comfortable listing football or basketball, I mean I have ideas but - not only that but these days I really only collect hockey and a little baseball but I grew up collecting baseball and I would consider myself an expert in baseball pre-1995 or so (when I left the hobby, but I did return 20 years later. lol) I'll give an honorable mention for "vintage" too. Baseball 5. 1992 Upper Deck? 4. 1986 Topps 3. 1991 Fleer 2. 1988 Donruss 1. 1991 Score HM: 1981 Donruss Hockey 5. 1992-93 Upper Deck 4. 1991-92 Bowman 3. 1991-92 Score 2. 1991-92 Topps 1. 1990-91 Pro Set HM: 1981-82 Topps There's just so much junk wax to choose from in both hockey and baseball. Keep in mind the "junk wax era" in hockey didn't begin until 1990-91 (with Pro Set) but in baseball I'd say the beginning was 1986, tho both 86 Donruss and Fleer are ok sets, Topps is obviously the least desirable, but bar none 1991 Score is hands down the worst set in the history of baseball, and 1990-91 Pro Set takes that honor in hockey - I mean both are just terrible sets, and Pro Set may be the worst set in the history of the hobby as far as a set considering the set is riddled with errors and errors of errors and corrected errors that are errors - 1990-91 Pro Set hockey is a error collectors wet dream - I mean it really is an error paradox. I mean the rookie class wasn't too bad and Pro Set series 2 is actually kinda loaded and they did a far better job as far as the errors are concerned it's still a ridiculous set despite having rookies of many Hall of Famers such as Modano, Belfour, Jagr, Federov, Mogilny, Sundin and borderline guys like Roenick and Curtis Joseph just to name a few. So from a rookie perspective it's a fantastic set but outside of that it's junk and if the rookie class wasn't as good as it was - it be a far more difficult product to move than it is now, tho error collectors really do enjoy it and there are quite a few rare error cards that are desirable among collectors. Of course my honorable mention as far as vintage was 81-82 Topps and I think few would debate that, now don't confuse the Topps set with the OPC set because the 81-82 OPC set is loaded with Hall of Fame rookies and it has a desirability factor x 500 against it's Topps "parallel"... Now are there HOF rookies in the Topps set? yes, Denis Savard, Peter Stastny and Dino Ciccirelli but the OPC set has those and more, and even some non-HOF'ers that are still very desirable, I mean I would say 81-82 OPC has to be up there with the best sets of the 80's when you factor rookies, design, production and all that jazz.. And of course in baseball it's easily 1991 Score and it doesn't matter which series it is - it really is just a terrible and fugly set and the only decent rookie is the Chipper Jones. And I highly doubt I'll get much debate among baseball fans with this one so I'll move on to the honorable mention which is obviously 1981 Donruss, and again I don't think I will get much debate here - I mean the 81 rookie class wasn't that great at all, I mean I think the only Hall of Famer is Tim Raines, but other than that it's bad and I think you can still find boxes of it today for less than $100 bucks, which isn't bad for a 40-year old product but good luck getting that $100 bucks out of it - I mean that's the price of admission just to have a fun evening breaking some vintage, just to say you did. lol And look, both Topps and Fleer were no better but they're at least slightly more desirable than the Donruss.

    I'll nominate a recent release, 2018 Topps Archives Snapshots. It's a small set, not worth collecting and they didn't number the cards they were lettered. It doesn't include Soto. I don't know how you produce a set this late in the year that doesn't include Soto and the autograph subjects aren't to good but all that together is not the worst of it, the cards have massive amounts of chipping on the back.

    1994 is about the only year of Fleer that I think looks sharp. I my opinion fleer 1995 is the worst baseball card base set design ever, and '88, '89, '91, '92, '93 are all also pretty bad. Overall Donruss is nothing special. I think 1985 was okay and '87 decent. 1990 sucked (so much red). I think it was lazy of Donruss to use the same design for the back of the cards from 1985 to 1991. I think Topps was better overall. Some years were poor like 1987 and 1990. Some years weren't necessarily bad, just plain (like 1988). But I'll take the plain Topps '88s over the ugly Fleer '88s. My favorite Topps years are 1979 and 1976. Upper deck was good overall. Of the early white boarder years ('89-'93) I like '92 the best. 1993 SP is one of my favorite sets of the era. Score is mostly crap. Pacific is all crap. I never liked Pinnacle. Bowman is okay here and there. The oversized '89s are dumb. I like Topps Stadium Club. The designs were usually pretty good, and the print quality was outstanding. The photos ranged from awesome to awful (Example, compare the '92 Eckersley to the Maddux).
