Lyrics
Take a look at me
Wired to a machine
Never would believe it
This can't be happening
Boxes that go beep
Little lights that leap
Tapping on a keyboard
What's happening to me?
And when the electricity starts to flow
The fuse that's on my sanity's got to blow
System addict I never can get enough
System addict never can give it up
Beauty or a beast
Don't know which I see
Still I couldn't leave it
Fascination won't cease
You know it's got the best of me
Sight and sound untangled in complexity all around
System addict I never can get enough
And when it gets to be too much can't go on
I really need the human touch
But I'm too far gone
Yes
I'm too far gone
No I can't go on

The most astonishing thing was that Five Star never had a single number 1 record. The melodies they had, had number 1 written all over them. The catchiness & melodies of their songs were way ahead of time.

And where are you from, as in Europe they were fire!
Oh my god, I'm back at school! It was snowing hard, and a few of us were taking shelter in the careers block (which was not much more than a makeshift Portakabin hut!). I'd taken in my little Saisho or Aiwa portable radio cassette player, and this track and The Captain Of Her Heart by Double are the two songs I clearly remember coming from the radio as we sat in there. A snowball fight with a lad from another class ensued as we left! I'd go back in a flash if I could.....and make sure System Addict was playing just as it was that day in January '86.

It was very ahead of its time. Back then ( 1985 ), it was just a catchy pop tune. 8 bit home computers were new. I would have been 10 years old when the song came out. The performers on the stage had professional writers and the writers were much older ( writers in the 1970's ) so those older writers really saw the birth and gradual takeover of technology.

When I hear it again I'm often reminded of Tuesday 18th February 1986,the day when it would slip from its peak position of number 3 in the UK singles chart (which I probably had on the radio to that evening). Being in the middle of a short gap between having been laid off by my employer and being taken on again when the work picked up,I was at a loose end and in my characteristically ditzy minded state I met up with my closest friend at the time, who also had the day off for some reason. He had with him a girl who I only knew at the time by her pseudonym of choice,Penny Black. On a cold, clear day we ended up on a bit of a pub crawl even though it was morning/lunchtime/early afternoon. But because I was driving I had adopted a policy of a maximum of one pint of beer or glass of wine or whatever the beverage may be,then no more, and that is the policy I have stuck with to this day. I'd only passed my test three-and-a-half months before. So I had two half pints of beer (to make it last),two hours apart, before hitting the orange juices while they were sinking the drinks like there was no tomorrow. So I was driving my scarlet 1973 Ford Capri on a fairly aimless journey as they were deciding where to go next. He had cans of lager and she was drinking snowballs, and as the "party" flowed there were cans and bottles everywhere. I became in need to answer Mother Nature's call, but let them persuade me to carry on driving until we stopped at whatever establishment we would rock up at next. I was getting rather desperate by the time, somewhere around Pinner,or maybe Harrow,we were in a heavy build-up of traffic waiting for a set of red traffic lights ahead of us to change. They probably didn't stay green for long enough for all the traffic in front to get through them at the first,or even second, attempt. We were in the inner of two left hand lanes in front of those lights, and I became increasingly desperate as I waited and waited but still they would not change. In the end I could stand it no longer, and jumped out of the car, which stalled and bumped the back of the car in front - which drove off when the lights decided to change at last. I legged it along the pavement, round a left hand corner at the crossroads where the lights were and dashed inside someone's hedge into their front garden to take a pee,red-faced with embarrassment. Then a police car pulled up and a pair of coppers, not in uniform I think, nicked me. They asked me how much I'd had to drink, and when I told them they were disbelieving to say the least. They said that the car smelled like a brewery inside, which I could well believe as there were empty beer cans and bottles everywhere, even rolling around on the floor. They took me back to the police station, where I had to empty my pockets of my possessions and give them my particulars before taking a breathalyser test. I'd been given a keyring with a tab on it that said "SCOTLAND YARD YARD FLYING SQUAD". They laughed and asked if I was thinking of joining them. I think I said I'd never thought about it,or something silly like that. They said that if I don't get charged for being over the limit I was the luckiest man in England,or something similar. So I had to breathe into the tube on their static table-top breathalyser machine in the police station. The alcohol limit was 35 mg. The machine returned a reading of 1,to their incredulity. They made me take a second test. It returned a reading of 0! They were checking the machine to see if it was faulty, while I was trying not to laugh. In the end they were terribly nice to me about it all,as they gave me a lift back to where my car was parked beside the road, wished me well and sent me on my way home as darkness started to fall. I came out of it a lot better than my companions, who had gone and I found out, probably the next day,had to walk some distance in their inebriated state to get home.
This has to be my favorite 5-Star video!!! The overall look of the video and styling is on target. Denise's killer lead vocals and the group's showmanship was unparalleled at the time and even still today...they were REAL ARTISTS. Choreography was ON POINT...ALWAYS. These outfits were what we all wanted to dress like when we were kids in the 80's and I'd TOTALLY rock any one of those in 2019! "Ready For The World" had a very similar style to these outfits on most of their album covers and videos and they were a fave of mine as well. Never thought this song would be relevant to the times 30 years later, but it's me to a T...a social media/computer junkie with a hardware habit.
Vintage 80's here. Guess the sentiment behind the song was way ahead of its time. Look at where we're all at now. We're all system addicts...

Miles ahead of most of the stuff today.
Saw them perform at an 80s festival one year, they were amazing - Doris the lead still had it - perfect voice. We are all now, over 30 years later - system addicts with our smartphones.

You mean Denise? That was the lead singer. Doris was the sister that did all of the choreography
Pure magic 😍🙌🏼🙏🏼💖 my childhood love right there

Love this song the 80s music is so much better than the rubbish they have today . This was the best era fivestar are amazing . This is real music .
Amazing this is from 1985!!! ...it still rocks.
I truly believe five star were brilliant and inspired many young dancers back in the day, including myself. So much talent and amazing music!! I wish they would reunite for a tour so much. They still sound amazing. 💯💚💚💚👑👑👑👑👑
I'm here every day. I always come back to this song. Quality music and I love this band and always have.

Extremely underrated band! They were fab!
35 years on the lyrics seem more fitting than ever... Take a look at me Wired to a machine Never would believe it This can't be happening Boxes that go beep Little lights that leap Tapping on a keyboard What's happening to me? ... And when it gets to be too much Can't go on I really need the human touch
I love FIVE STAR!! The 80's rule...hate that they're not singing togerher anymore.

Saw Five Star at Rewind 80s festival in Henley a few years ago. They were brilliant. Very well rehearsed, and one of the best sounding acts there. Sadly, a bit under-rated in the 80s, but actually very good live.
