you nailed it. Here it is 7 years later and still find comfort and challenge in his tutorials.
Bravo Gavin, you have made the understanding of using light meter so clear and succinct. Lots of videos on light meter are either full of short comings or long winded. Trying to follow them is like muddling through the crap. Even Sekonic videos fail to educate would be users adequately leaving them fumbling about. I have a Sekonic L478 and I truly applaud you for making it so easy to understand light meter. Thanks very much and looking forward to further videos from you.
Your a naturally gifted teacher. Thank you for your time and expertise.
You sold me. After all of the videos I've watched on light meter use, yours is the one that convinced me to take the plunge. Thanks for a great eye opener.
Such a great instructor. Clear, detailed, focused. So appreciative.
Top notch tutorial once again from Gavin: simple, well explained and super informative. Great work from a great teacher and photographer!
You are a master, Gavin! Another great video! Your videos are so helpful and easy to understand!
Thank you once again Gavin for another great tutorial, my first 'go to' for advice as you are straight to the point without over complicating things, very clear and informative with a reassuring tempo in your delivery. 👍🏻

I’ve watched tons of these videos on using light meters and I was finally able to understand what I need to do when using one. Thank you so much!

Gavin you are a legend! Listening to you is so easy. A light meter is a must for me I feel. Thanks so much!!
Gavin, thumbs up. Excellent tutorial. Breakdown step by step, explaining how many clicks make up one stop, and how to obtain that balanced lighting of subject. Well done.
Fantastic, informative video. I've just got that exact meter, so thank you for this. Best explanation on KZread 😊
Thank you so much for this ! I bought this lightmeter (secondhand without a manual) and needed some information how to use it in practice. Could not figure out how to trigger my flashes. Now I can ! I like all of your videos, fun and clear information. Keep up the good work !
Love your background. thanks for the tutorial.
Brilliant and simple explanation. I’ve one of these meters and wasn’t quite sure how to use it. Now it’s a clear as day. Thanks a million. 😀😀😀

THIS is the video I needed to see. You explained it perfectly. Great tutorial, thanks.
You do the best job explaining photo techniques. Thanks.
Great simple but helpful video as always. thank you 😊
Thanks Gavin! Very good explanation! It blew away lots of confusion on how to use the light meter (flash meter). Lucky for me that I bought the Sekonic L-308S some time ago. I'm now more eager to use it.
I have watched many photography tutorial videos online and your's are the best and most informative so far ... Thank you Gavin you helped me a lot in advancing my photography skills .... keep it up
So clear and succinct. Love your videos!
Brilliant, mate- cheers for this and all your great vids!
merci merci merci 1000 fois de partager vos connaissances!!! the final trick just kills!
Fantastic as always Gavin thank you
I have been thinking of purchasing of flash meter for some time. Your video explains in simple terms how a flash meter functions and has answered all the questions I have been waiting to be answered in a simple concise manner . Great video.
Thank you so much. I’m new to flash photography and just bought my first meter. Videos like this are very valuable to me.
I've watched a few videos trying to learn about how to use a flash meter and this one made the most sense.
Gavin...brilliant as always! Thanks.
Gavin, you are a wizard, and a treasure for all of the information you provide on flash photography. It amazes me how many folks will not use a light meter. I probably would have saved a bunch of money if I had seen this video 8 years ago. I had originally bought into the PocketWizard and Sekonic universe, but I must say that the Flashpoint and Godox products eventually took over after watching so many of Gavin's videos. On the plus side, even Sekonic has embraced the Godox/Flashpoint products. Talk about timesaving measures. You can even meter HSS flash modes now. Awesome education Gavin! Well done as usual.
Thank you love your videos, simple and well explained.
Gavin Hoey, You are good ! Thank for sharing this !!!!!!!!!!!! I need to try this :)
I have that same meter. they glorious Sekonic L-308S and I love it.... great show as always Gav Thanks................

You are a Great Teacher. Thank You!
Superb video, thank you so much!
all the answers to my questions , best vd thanks a lot
Very Simple yet informative . Thanks .
Gavin, thanks for the clip this was very helpful!
Bought my first one about 30yrs ago, saves so much time. As you pointed out, it gives you a good starting place. Keep up the good work, like your vids although I am an 'old dog'.
Many thanks! I do like your position: "it is you the photographer, so YOU have to choose"....
Top class. Thank you.
Very helpful Gavin, thanks.
Brilliantly explained. Very tempted to buy a meter now.
Gavin, all your videos are creative, easy to understand, and engaging. This one is no exception. One question. How would you meter using a second light such as a fill. In your example the back light would not add to the light coming from the key. However, if you had a fill light on the left side that would add to the light onto the subject coming from the key. I would then have to go back to the key and drop down the power level of the key, which them alter the fill, which I would have to up the power on, etc. Hope this makes sense.
Gavin, that was perfectly explained and demonstrated. Just when I was thinking, 'and what about when you add a second light?', you showed how to add a second light.
Excellent tutorial - you've just sold me on a light meter now I have a better understanding how it works.
Thanks Gavin, big help. Thumbs up + favorite
You really know how to teach. Love your videos.
Great explanation even I can do it. Thanks Gavin.
So, so helpful!!! I thought you had a radio trigger in your flash to trip the lights, but you are just using the test button. I really didn't want to get a sync cord and now I don't have to. (My used flash meter didn't come with a manual, but with this video I can now make it work like I want.) Thank you!
Another great video,, thanks Gav
Just picked up a Polaris SPD100 from Ebay for a great price, and had a few questions - all answered! Gavin is fantastic, and my favourite Adorama speaker

great informative video, I'm planning on buying this one, quick question Gavin, is there a video by any chance on how to use it for outside portrait scenarios?
Excelente Maestro!!!!
Excellent tips! I have this same flash meter, but the picture always seems to dark. I will try pointing it to the light and see if that makes a difference in getting the correct exposure.
great as always :)
Thank you.
awesome lesson
Just got my flash meter to day. An what do you know; it's the same one you've got. Made this video even easier to follow.
Awesome!
Top Man, thank you
great video. what on camera metering mode is used? beside using the light metering. thank you.
Hi Gavin, I love your videos! I always watch it everytime I want some inspiration :) Thank you for sharing your skills with us..... I got a question, what trigger and receiver do you use? I can see that you are able to adjust your light remotely. I just recently bought an Em5 II as well and love it, would help a lot to know what you use :)
Thats it-I am getting a Sekonic #lightmeter thank you Gavin and #Adorama
Got this meter recently, surprised by how much time it saves. No longer guessing, easy to setup lights especially for freezing action before the action begins.
Hi thanks for sharing, how would you use this with natural light example out side on a sunny day then moved inside or under some shade, does this meter require flash to work?
the best - like always
Very helpful
Thanks Gavin
Brilliant.
Hello, Thank you for the video, I couldn't set ss 1000 or 2000 on my L-308X. How do I do it? Thanks
Hello Gavin, thanks for your videos! Could you telle what is the backgroud. Is it possible to order it somewhere?
Could you recommend a good (affordable) trigger to use with an Olympus FL-50R flash and an OM-D E-M1? Thanks for another helpful video!
As a keen amateur photographer I am keen to learn more about it (this channel being most helpful). I wanted to see if I could get a straight answer on why some one would need calibration devices such as the Sekonic Exposure Profile Target 2. It is VERY expensive. I'm just not sure if its something that can be done in another way. Also I am really unsure what benefits there are to ones photography. Thanks in advance. Tam.
Extrapolating, I now know how to meter for four or five strobes (2xEdge+Hair+Front-Down+Front-front) Annie Leibovitz would use up to 12+lights?, I've got a pretty much a fixed four or five light set-up so it isn't that complex; but I'll have to work from the second perspective with each strobes power set to illuminate correctly in a studio with (pretty-much) unchanging Camera ISO and Aperture settings. An Exceptional Educational Vid' One of the very best I've seen on studio strobe and flash-meter settings and use. Brilliant (Already-Subscribed-Here) Big Thanks Gavin :)
Hi Gavin, I have just watched your entire Home Studio Essentials series back to back and found it to be really enlightening. I was just wondering how small your "small home studio" actually is? Any chance of sharing the dimensions with us so we can get an idea of the restrictions you're working in? Thanks for the great work, Ian
awesome as always. Just wondering what is the theory/principle behind setting the hair/background light to the same aperture value as the main light? doesnt it depend on the distance? Just curious. Keep up the great work You are my FAVORITE photo teacher Gavin!
Do you have any links to the Streaklight/softbox adaptor or holder and trigger used in video? Interested in getting a set similar to that, thanks
fabuloso
