Five Minute Reedmaker: The Mack Plus Shape

Музыка

I had always heard that there was a special method for shaping with Mack tips. And I had wondered whether it was one of those oboe superstitions or something really real that had a basis in reality. This week, I finally ran the experiment!

Interesting experiment! I have used a Pfeifer Mack shape for many years, and have always wrapped at 72.5. Love your videos. ❤️

More support for your thesis here: I reviewed John Mack's video to send a link to a young colleague, and I noticed that he shaped his cane at the very top of the ears, possibly even higher (see 1:00 in his video). Of course, we don't know what tip he used.

Oh super information! Mack shapes aside, I have been fighting what feel like choked RDG 1 and -1N (but not wound past the staple) reeds the past couple of months while Joshua+2 has been ok. I now want to try shaping the RDG shapes longer to see if I can get them to vibrate. Thanks

I'm definitely going to experiment with this concept. Another great video, Jennet. Thanks for posting.

I have done this experiment as well and it was lots of fun. I have asked a few different people and also heard that this is only something Mack did with the Mack+ shape but that he did not do it with the other Mack shapes. Of course, all rumors, but it was definitely a fun things to play around with. Thank you so much for making this video and all of your videos!

That definitely jibes with Reed's comment, below! Turns out, I maybe don't know the full version of the rumor!

OMG!!! I have waited twenty years for this observation!!! Finally, a clear cut distinction.....many, many thanks. So, I usually wrap at 73; works for me. For those that find they need to wrap at 74 , would another way then be to , instead of 74 and longer, perhaps as you suggest, shape with cane parallel to top of shaper tip? I willl experiment. Also, I know that time of year can make wrap length change......thanks for this wonderful video!!!! PS I once owned a Mack Pfeiffer tip (when they were hand made), and remember wrapping at 72.....make sense now.....

YES, the Mack-Pfeiffer at 72 makes sense! I think your other idea might be backward though - if someone is winding at 74, that either means they LIKE a super narrow throat or that their shape is super wide down there, but shaping LONGER on the shaper will only make it wider. If they are winding at 74, maybe that means they are ALREADY shaping long on the shaper, and should shove the cane further down?

I'm stumbling around right now getting back into playing and making my own reeds for the first time so I'd love to hear examples of different throat sizes. I've had some come out with a very thin metallic sound. My notes from forever ago said to tie to 74 but I think the shapes I have aren't quite the same as what my teacher did back then so I'm going to try 73 and see if I get more consistent results.

Yes, try going a little shorter - and let me think about how best to show that distinction in a video soon!

What’s that new cutting block? Looks nice. Did you make it yourself or buy it? Also loved this experiment. I tie at the ears.

It's cool, right? I was selling those large pretty ones for a while until my supplier stopped making them, and that one is the last of my stock. I'm in the market for big pretty cutting blocks, World! Thanks, Anish.

I had always been told that you can get a great two-in-one deal with a Mack+ tip: shaping at the bottom of the ears is a true Mack+, whereas shaping at the top of the ears matches the Mack++ dimensions! Could also be part of the myth and legend that surrounds this tip 😂

OH MAN, now I have to get a ++ to test that theory? Also, though, that's pretty cool. And I like being in here busting up the mystique...

Please let us know your thoughts on the two different types of shape/reed results based on the cane placement. I am looking to get one also! 😊
